Selection of the camp venue and the pro-gram participants was done during the months long studious process and administrative preparations which included weekly travels and observatory visits to various youth organizations in the region (basket-ball clubs, youth and sports resorts, schools, NGO’s, etc.). The campers from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo were than selected in close cooperation with their teachers and coaches, based on theirs edu-cational, athletic and societal skills. Program activities included: Two basket-ball practices per day, plus the morning footing and stretching exercises and daily academic lectures and situational workshops designed to deal with issues like Fair Play, importance of education, teamwork, tolerance, reconciliation, commitment, compassion, leadership, integrity, healthy and substance abuse free lifestyle. Camp activities were designed to pro-mote the desired qualities not just in sports but in life in general. Drawing from the examples from their own experiences the campers were encouraged to understand the above mentioned issues in the wid-er context of life. That way, from one point we use sports to learn about life, and from another, we take a more critical look at sports and encourage the ques-tions that ponder on the camper’s lives and tackle issues outside sports. In line with project’s goals relating to the impacts of sport and the importance of education on youths, tolerance and peace building in the re-gion, the camp hosted special guest lecturers from variousfieldssuchasdistinguishedacademicsandpractitioners infieldsofsportsandeducation,con-flictresolution,high-profileprofessionalcoachesandathletes, various policy makers, youth agenda organi-zations,etc.Entireprojectstaff,consistingofbasket-ball coaches and promoters, academic lecturers and workshop facilitators was carefully selected through professional networks of the camp organizers and were handpicked based on their extensive profes-sional references.

Evaluation of the projectwas done accord-ing to the reports of the coaches, lecturers and work-shops facilitators. This report is based on their daily accounts. General success of the project is and will be measured by the follow up actions and the continu-ance of the network of camp participants and organiz-ers activities upon the completion of this project. Practical indicator of the project success is the international and regional cooperation between the various stakeholders for the creation of this proj-ect. Both Individual and organizational efforts sin-cerely contributed in successfully establishing such a valuable youth project (Individuals, NGO’s, Bas-ketballFederations,Variousgovernmentalorganiza-tions,Educationalinstitutions,Corporations,etc.).

Verymuchinlinewiththeproject’sexpectedvision, mission, goals and values; the camp’s success was greatly based on the anticipated connection of the campers identities and their tremendous abilities to absorb instructions and through lectures, practices and constant interaction mature as a group. These 10 days have provided them with the opportunity to focus on and develop their individual potential while learning about Fair Play, tolerance and importance of education. “I CAMETOPLAY” project used every op-portunity to stress and celebrate the multiculturalism among its campers and to use diversity to promote tolerance, compassion and respect. Lecturesandworkshopshavedistinguished“ICAMETOPLAY”fromanyothercampof itskindin the region. These were especially motivating and while increasing interaction among the campers, lec-tures and workshops have provided them with the open avenue for discussion and learning. It was an extremely exhilarating experience watching the campers wholeheartedly take part to discuss and tackle issues like prejudice, responsibility, commit-ment, integrity and education(among others), using every opportunity to learn from their teachers and more importantly from each other! Basketball practices were second to none, individual commitment of the coaches to all camp-ers on a personal level was extremely noticeable and coupled with the athletic dedication of the campers it produced high quality of practices and games. It was theintentionofthe“ICAMETOPLAY”tomakesurethat every child leaves the camp as a better basket-ball player and the camp staff methodical approach to practices, both team and individual, was instrumental in this regard. As programs progressed, observant was change in behavior of the campers and their commit-ment to emphasize the elements like compassion and

understanding to help each other and act responsi-bly in lectures and practices. These newly acquired perspectives towards if each other have allowed them to grow together as a group and have served as a mechanism of improvement of the camps pro-gram itself! In reviewing the evaluation sheets of the campers, Responsibility, Respect, TeamWork andFair Play stand out as the main values learned at the camp. Moreover, in initial year camp “I Came to play” accommodated group of forty children, age from12to17yearsold.Weareproudthatwithinourfirstyearwemanagedtogatheranadequateamountof donations for this preliminary group of campers. Arrival of participants started early in the morning with boys from Montenegro at 5:30am, fol-lowed by the rest of the participants from Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Slovenia and Kosovo.

The arrival of participants from Slovenia at 14:00 concluded the arrival of camp-ers. Upon arrival, and the procedural formalities, coaches and the camp staff have introduced the campers to their accommodation arrangements. In-tended to improve the communication and socialization among the campers, accommodation was done by the prin-ciple that the kids from all of the former republics will live together in randomly mixed rooms for the whole duration of the camp. This was done in order to ini-tialize and reinforce the contact among the campers from the start of the project, as the interaction amongst the campers was deemed the integral part of the proj-ect.

ketball court played the documentary movie “Hoop Dreams”.Hoop DreamsBy Roger Ebert Oct 21, 1994A film like “Hoop Dreams” is what themovies arefor. It takes us, shakes us, and make us think in new ways about the world around us. It gives us the im-pression of having touched life itself.

“Hoop Dreams” is, on one level, a documen-taryabouttwoAfrican-AmericankidsnamedWilliamGates and Arthur Agee, from Chicago’s inner city, who are gifted basketball players and dream of some-day starring in the NBA. On another level, it is about much larger sub-jects: about ambition, competition, race and class in our society. About our value structures. And about the daily lives of people like the Agee and Gates families, who are usu-ally invisible in the mass media, but have a determination and resilien-cy that is a cause for hope.

The movie spans six years in the lives ofWilliam andArthur, starting when they are in the eighth grade, and continuing through the firstyearofcollege.Itwasintendedoriginally to be a 30-minute short, butasthefilmmakersfollowedtheirtwo subjects, they realized this was a much larger, and longer story. And so we are allowed to watch the subjects grow up during the movie, and this palpable sense of the passage of time is like walking for a time in their shoes.

One image from the film:Gates, who livesin the Cabrini Green project, and Agee, who lives on Chicago’s South Side, get up before dawn on cold winterdaystobegintheirdaily90-minutecommutetoWestchester.Thestreetlightsreflectoffthehardwinter ice, and we realize what a long road - what plain hard work - is involved in trying to get to the top of the professional sports pyramid. Other high school students may go to “career counselors,” who steer them into likelyprofessions.ArthurandWilliamareworking harder, perhaps, than anyone else in their school - for jobs which, we are told, they have only a .00005 percent chance of winning.

“Hoop Dreams” contains more actual in-formation about life as it is lived in poor black city neighborhoodsthananyotherfilmIhaveeverseen.“Hoop Dreams,” however, is not only a documenta-ry. It is also poetry and prose, muckraking and ex-pose, journalism and polemic. It is one of the great

moviegoing experiences of my lifetime. The movie enjoyed great reviews and dis-cussion among the campers and camp staff. After themovieitwastimeforbed;Lightsoutat22:30.
