started drinking at 12 years old, hanging with an older crowd. To be cool, drinking

and drugging became an integral part of my every day life. I was getting drunk every weekend, sometimes not coming home at all. I failed out of high school. I got my G.E.D. and a job in a res-taurant. I was still getting drunk every weekend. My weekend

extended from Thursday to Tues-day, and I started drinking every night after work and going to after hour parties where I started using cocaine. The nights lasted into the early mornings, every morning. This went on every day for about 25 years. Finally I got locked up, lost my job, and got kicked out on the street. I came to The Healing Place and learned I didn’t have to drink. They showed me the 12-Steps on how

to stay sober and happy. I am not the same person who came in these doors. I have been sober 13 months and work as assistant staff, helping others find their way. The people here showed me that they used to be just like me. Then I was shown the 12-Steps as a plan for spiritual awakening, renewal, and change. With their help, I found a God that I could rely on to help keep me clean and sober and to build a better life. ■

A Spiritual Renewal

A New Partnershipn January 2009, Wake County launched a new program, Advanced Practice Paramedics (APP). This unique program matches spe-

cially-trained paramedics with patients in acute, high-risk emergency situations to ensure that they receive treatment at facilities other than emergency rooms. The Detox Unit at The Healing Place is one of those facilities that have become an APP partner.

APP’s partnering allows personnel to provide preventative care for selective populations such as those with a history of alcoholism and other drug addictions (AOD) as they utilize alterna-tive destinations for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) patients, thus avoiding already stressed emergency rooms in Wake County.

APP’s Patrick S. O’Boyle, Wake County EMS, maintains that “the success rate of The Healing Place, combined with the compassion for the clients, resulted in a natural partnership between The Healing Place and the Wake County EMS Advanced Practice Paramedic Program. We now have a treatment option that will better serve the community and most of all an immediate treatment modality for those citizens battling alcoholism and other drug addictions. We are honored to be welcomed into this strong partner-ship.”

In addition, APP personnel receive valuable instruction from its partners. The Healing Place, for example, helped develop training regarding alcoholism and other drug addiction issues as well as providing clinical training time at our facilities. “Protocols are currently in development

that will assist APP’s in patient entry to The Healing Place,” stated Jeffrey Hammerstein, District Chief/PIO for the Wake County Department of EMS.

A unique benefit of the APP and The Healing Place partnership is continued patient awareness, rather than a one time “drop off” at a detox unit. As APP personnel leave patients in need of service at The Healing Place, it does not end there. APP staff are able to follow the progress of homeless individuals with AOD problems who commit to our program.

APP participants have “gone above and beyond in their support of The Healing Place with donations and encouragement,” said Chris Budnick, Vice President of Programs. “Through the training we provided and op-portunities to spend a day at The Healing Place, APP participants have walked away with a refreshed belief in the ability of individuals to recover. We are thrilled to have developed such a strong alliance with these dedicated health care professionals.”

For additional information, contact Chris Budnick, [email protected] or Jeffrey Hammerstein, [email protected]. ■

Dr. Bob Bilbro Honored for Dedicated Service

n December 18, 2008, during a Men’s Transitional Ceremony, former Board Chair Dr. Robert Bilbro was honored for his years of service at The Heal-

ing Place. Dr. Bilbro’s perceptions of The Healing Place’s program are grounded in his belief of its “miraculous transformation in people’s lives.” His continued support has ensured the possibility of transformation in the lives of so many of The Healing Place’s clients. “As an organiza-tion serving the needs of an at-risk population, we are grateful, indeed, for Bob Bilbro,” stated Dennis Parnell, President, CEO, of The Healing Place. ■

Living Legacies:Planned Giving for The Healing Place

o you have a will? More than half of American citizens do not, often leaving their estates in complicated upheavals. The Healing Place of Wake County now offers solutions through seminars on planned giving.

In 2008, The Healing Place Endowment Program was established to ensure the viability of our mission in the years ahead. Simply stated, an endowment is a fund where the principal is never withdrawn and spent, but is invested perpetually to produce continual income for The Heal-ing Place.

The Healing Place recently sponsored two donor appreciation dinners that featured a presentation on planned giving strategies. The presenta-tions were conducted by attorney David Watters and Greg Patterson, a Certified Financial Planner and former Board Chair of The Healing Place.

In the presentations, donors were encouraged to look for ways they could maximize their charitable giving to support the non-profits that reflect their beliefs and values. Intertwined with the planned giving strategies reviewed was an overview of how income taxes and estate taxes impact charitable gifts. These taxes were referred to as social capital. Attendees found that they could default the use of their social capital to the government through taxes or they could possibly direct where their social capital is spent by utilizing select planned giving strategies.

It was strongly recommended during the presentations that individu-als seek tax and legal advice before implementing any planned giving strategy. Planned giving strategies presented during the seminars included: ■ Gifts Other than Cash ■ Bequests or Gifts made at Death ■ Gifts of Life Insurance ■ Charitable IRA Distributions ■ Naming a Charity the Beneficiary of a Retirement Account ■ Charitable Remainder and Wealth Replacement Trusts

Future planned giving presentations are being organized and sponsored by The Healing Place. Please contact Barrett Joyner, Development Direc-tor, to find out about the next event or to discuss how planned giving might benefit you and the charities of your choice. Leave a living legacy for future generations and support the mission of The Healing Place of Wake County. ■

ince 2001, the position of Business Operations Man-ager for The Healing Place

has been an integral component in the success of our program. Rita Faison’s responsibilities in this area require a steady hand in monitoring sound financial practices. From accounts payable/receivables and financial analysis

to monitoring complex state and federal budgetary regulations, Rita ensures compliance in our day-to-day operations. Sig-nificantly, too, she maintains our accounting books and general ledgers as recommended by an independent CPA firm, our Executive Director, and Board of Directors. Not an easy task, but

one skillfully accomplished by Rita. Prior to her tenure at The Healing Place, she served as office manager for two local firms and as a legal assistant for a law firm-experience that serve her well in her posi-tion as our business manager. Rita Faison, a committed, dedicated person, feels that “working at The Healing Place has been an eye opening and life changing experi-ence. To witness the miraculous changes in clients’ lives that we see here on a daily basis and to know I am a small part of that is the most rewarding experience I have ever had. People truly get their lives back here. Our employees are a remarkable group of people who work hard, who believe in what they do, and who truly love their jobs. I know in my heart that this is where I am supposed to be. It is a privilege to be a part of The Healing Place team. Who could ask for more than that?” ■

olunteers at The Healing Place are the backbone of our daily operations–from driving residents to appointments to hours spent assisting in our

clinics and cafeterias. Universally, volunteers agree that service at The Healing Place is meaningful and that it enriches their life experiences. This is certainly true for volunteer David Fitzpatrick.

David’s background is diverse. A transplant from England, his family settled in North Carolina where he received his education. He earned a Master of Manage-ment at NC State University and worked at Andersen Consulting and Ericsson Mobile before moving to IBM where he has been a manager for the last 10 years. Before any of this, he had an interesting 18-month stint working in Abu Dhabi in the Middle East installing com-munications equipment on off shore oil rigs.

Four years ago, David became a volunteer at The Heal-ing Place, serving food in the cafeteria. He liked the contact with the clients and the opportunity to mentor them, but he felt that he could do more. He was ac-cepted to the Master of Clinical and Substance Abuse Counseling program at East Carolina University where he will graduate at the end of this year. In addition, Da-vid began working as a detox monitor and his current

project where he has devoted countless hours in redesigning our data collection and data report-ing at The Healing Place. He continues to serve in our cafeteria and assists with office work as needed.

David Fitzpatrick believes passionately in The Healing Place recovery program. It clearly has changed the direction of his life and his career: “I remain amazed by the compassion of the staff and the unique ability of the human being to heal with caring support.” ■

Naming and adoption projects are still available at both our Men’s Facility on Goode Street and our Women’s Facility on Glen Royal Road for corporations, businesses, and individuals. Several of the 12-Steps Meditation areas at the Women’s Facility are available for “naming and adoption.” Also, Phase II semi-private residential rooms at both locations are also available for “nam-ing and adoption” opportunities by our supporters. These rooms, a privilege for residents who have worked long hours on their recoveries, are in constant need of financial support as well as supplies. ■

“The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day he created Spring.” -Bern Williams

ith winter’s chill behind us and the first bulbs of spring pushing their

way to bloom, it is clear that spring is in the air. When I think of spring, I think of North Carolina’s delicate and colorful blooming trees, the cherry, Bradford Pear, and, of course, the elegant dog-wood. I also think of spring’s first crop of vegetables. After a season of warm meat stews and filling comfort foods, I like to switch to crisper, lighter meals as a wel-come to spring. Watercress is one of my favorite spring vegetables, a crisp leaf vegetable belonging to the cruciferous family. Cousin to broccoli, boc choy, and radish, it is the benchmark of spring. Loaded with calcium, iron, and vitamin C, watercress is said to contain cancer-suppressing properties as well. It tastes good, and it is good for you! For this issue, I have cho-sen a favorite watercress recipe-Grilled Grapefruit & Chicken Watercress Salad with Walnuts & Bleu Cheese Crumbles. Purchase it fresh at the Farmers’ Market, next door to The Healing Place, or at your local grocery store. Water-cress is best used within two days of purchase. Just have fun!

Grilled Grapefruit & Chicken Watercress Salad with Walnuts & Bleu Cheese Crumbles

1 pink grapefruit, peeled & cut into 1/2-inch wheels 4 4-ounce boneless, skinless chicken breasts2 bunches (1-pound) watercress, rinsed 3 T. extra virgin olive oil3-ounces bleu cheese crumbles 3-ounces walnuts, shelled1/4 tsp. kosher salt Freshly ground pepper2 T. balsamic vinegar

Preheat your grill, and brush with cooking oil. Clean the water-cress under cold running water, then place in colander to drain. Lightly oil the grapefruit wheels and chicken breasts. Season with salt and pepper. When grill is very hot, place the grapefruit on the hottest sections of the grill. Then place your chicken on the cooler spots. Watch the grapefruit-you only want to “mark” it once on each side, just enough to have one set of grill lines. Continue to grill the chicken until cooked completely (165º) and remove chicken and grapefruit. Chill grapefruit in the refrigerator. Fill each plate evenly with watercress. Slice chicken into julienned strips and lay on top of salad. Cut each grapefruit wheel in half and “unroll” until each triangular section can be easily removed. Drop evenly on each salad. Cascade walnuts and bleu cheese crumbles onto salad, then drizzle each with balsamic vinegar and a liberal amount of olive oil. Season with fresh ground pepper. Serves 4. ■

This Quarter’s Kitchen Tip!A unique and foolproof method of cooking dry pasta! Bring salted pasta water to a boil, add pasta and bring it back to a boil for only 4 minutes. Then cover your pot and remove from the heat. In 10 minutes, drain the pasta. It will be perfectly cooked!

ince 2001, the position of Business Operations Man-ager for The Healing Place

has been an integral component in the success of our program.

started drinking at 12 years old, hanging with an older crowd.

flowers blooming and birds singing in chorus, winter has released its icy grip on each of us. As part of this great life cycle of nature, people respond in kind with joy and hope for the immediate future. It is a time for shaking off cabin fever by working in the garden, playing out-doors, and making plans for the upcoming summer months. It is definitely a time of hope, renewal, and planning.

At The Healing Place, we share these sentiments, and we look forward with optimism towards a bright future for our clients and our organization as a whole. We have been busy working on a number of exciting projects to help us “carry the message” and to secure our place in providing recovery to the suffering far into the fore-seeable future. One of the
