Although in its 18th year of existence, the 2015 edition of the Night of Artists is still breaking new ground. Partnering with the Mayors Arts Gala for the first time to launch the show on Friday, March 6, is just one fresh element producer Phil Alain is bringing to the ever-evolving NOA arts extravaganza.

The second new element is an art project of a staggering scale. Not unfamiliar with expansive art endeavours, Lewis Lavoie, Paul Lavoie and Alain, have taken the definition of ambitious to a new level. In anticipation of Canadas 150th birthday in 2017, the three St. Albert artists have conceived a mural project that rivals the immenseness of our nation. Over two years, the trio plans to create a mural that will include all provinces and territories and feature over 80,000 paintings and 150 individual murals that, when united, will form one gigantic mural mosaic. The mural, if connected, would be over 365 metres wide (4 football fields) by 2.5 metres high (8 feet).

The three men have been creating murals as a team since 2003, after Alain discovered a Lewis Lavoie mural called David. The mural, the face of Michelangelos David, was made up of hundreds of paintings that Lavoie had painted himself. Alain then approached Lavoie with a dream of creating the Masterpeace Project. This ambitious idea was based on a mural bringing the world together through art. Shortly thereafter the Lavoie brothers and Alain began creating murals together, by utilizing hundreds of

artists from all over North America. What seemed initially like a far-fetched idea has turned into a unique, St. Albert-born art form.

We hear all the time how Canadian our mural mosaic projects are, not only because of the diversity reflected in the art, but the diversity in creating the art, enthuses Alain. So we thought what better way to celebrate Canadas 150th birthday with a mural that reflects and includes contributions from the entire nation.

The project will officially be launched at the Night of Artists festival, March 6 to 8, with Lewis Lavoie designing the first of the 150 murals. Artists, seniors, political figures and children of all ages will be invited to paint what they feel best represents their community onto individual four-inch-by-four-inch tiles that will be united to form the first section of the project. Participants, with the assistance of the mural mosaic team, will for the most part be free to express themselves with their own unique artistry. Artists of all skill levels are welcome. By the time NOA wraps Sunday night, the first key piece of the Canada 150 Mosaic project should be complete and ready to start on its two-year journey.

Five to fifteen individual communities will be

selected to represent each province and territory. Each community will host an event inviting participants from their region to participate, creating their own community mural. Upon completion of the entire Canada 150 Mosaic, each community mural will be returned to the town or city where it was created as a reminder of their communities contribution to the 150th project.

We hope the mural will represent a cultural mosaic, a time capsule, a visual portrayal of history, an art masterpiece, from the soul of the nation, says

Alain, an art piece that 50 years from now may inspire another generation who will in turn be able to celebrate through the mural and hopefully take it upon themselves to add to this memory.

Follow the project online at www.Canada150mosaic.com. Interested artists and

communities wishing to host one of the 150 murals can apply online as well.

Tickets for the Mayors Celebration of the Arts Gala are $35 each and include entry into all daytime events throughout the weekend. Saturday Night at the Opera tickets are $20 each. All daytime events are only $5 each or $7 at the door. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit NightofArtists.com

An awesomely gnarly 80s celebration of shoulder pads, bright colours, neon prints, gaudy accessories and, like, a big-hair-themed evening will feature, like, artistic demonstrations, hors doeuvres, funky music, entertainment and, like, dude, an art raff le. The Art Gallery of St. Albert is celebrating the milestone 25th anniversary of their annual fundraiser on Saturday, March 14th, at St. Albert Place.

Pity the fool who doesnt bid on a selection of artwork and artistic pieces in the silent auction featuring Frances Alty-Arscott, Pierre Bataillard, Jim Davies and Peter Ivens. Dont have a cow; the studios will be open so you can create a textured artwork from clay or learn about printmaking, choose a design by a local artist and handprint it onto a totally rad tote bag. Bring your own photo or choose a favourite 80s image and make a classic button. Take it to the max with local potters Julie Hage and Willie Renema who will collaborate with participants to create a clay wall-hanging with one of the novice potters eligible to win

the final piece. The fundraising component is

absolutely integral to our programs, says Jenny Willson-McGrath, director/curator of the gallery. We really count on the support of the community, and we would love to see some people who perhaps dont visit the gallery frequently to come see us, try some hands-on art creation, and of course enjoy some great food and beverages.

The gallerys roots were planted in 1985 by offering educational programs to St. Albert residents and students. Located in the historic Banque dHochelaga building (constructed in 1920) since 2002, the AGSA has been offering top-f light exhibitions for many years in addition to ongoing educational and community programs. 2015 will see the gallery expand their community programs to include the St. Albert Place Visual Arts studios.

Dont be a hoser; tickets are $30 in advance, $20 for Arts and Heritage & SAPVAC members or $35 at the door, subject to availability. Go to artgalleryofstalbert.ca or call 780-460-4310. The gallery is located at 19 Perron Street, St. Albert.

International Womens Day has been observed since the early 1900s. It is an official holiday in many countries, including Afghanistan, Russia and Eritrea, and is now celebrated in almost every country in the world, supported by many of the worlds leaders. What started as a day to raise awareness of issues facing womensuch as lack of education, adequate health care and safetyhas now become a celebration of the progress humanity has made as a whole as we strive to achieve the heights we are capable of reaching. We are told by Bah writings that: The world of humanity has two wingsone is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly.

Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible. Not until the world of women becomes equal to the world of men, in the acquisition of virtues and perfections, can success and prosperity be attained as they ought to be.

To celebrate the achievement that women living in the St. Albert, Morinville and Sturgeon County areas have made to our communities, the Bah community of St. Albert is hosting its 18th-annual International Womens Day celebration. Five deserving women have been chosen with great difficulty from among the

many nominations sent in by friends, co-workers or family members.

Women were chosen from a variety of categories, such as the arts, business, community service education, health, literacy, motherhood, peace, youth, First Nations initiatives and science. The awards night, being held this year at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Cornerstone Hall, 6 Tache St.,St. Albert, is where the five remarkable chosen women will be awarded and acknowledged.

These recipients, along with all of the women nominated every year, truly illustrate where education, encouragement and opportunity can lead.

History has always considered women inferior to men, especially in the arena

of intelligence. During many times in history, women were led to believe to be even less than human. But we now know that the conditions in the past were due to womens lack of opportunity. Being denied the right to education, women were able to advance only slowly. As we establish what has been revealed in the Bah writings, that mankind and womankind as parts of composite humanity are coequal and that no difference in estimate is allowable, for all are human, we will experience the true benefit of a world where all are given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

    Last Week: Servus Place Arena

W ell that was interesting! A tremendous amount of good is coming down the St. Albert pipeline. It is exciting, to be sure.It was a close vote, to be certain. On Saturday,

February 21, voters took to the polling station (singular) in Spruce Grove to cast their ballot for the PC nomination for the Spruce Grove - St. Albert constituency.

That quickly changed a few days later when the rumblings began mid-week that there was an error in the process.

It has been found that four ballots were cast by individuals ineligible to vote. The riding has been directed by PC Alberta to have this vote redone, as the votes for the candidates was very close, said Carol Stewart, chair of the nominations committee.

Good on them for quickly admitting the error and committing to a new vote right away. It was too close of a race with the difference in votes supposedly (and unconfirmed by the party) being less than that of the error.

Mark your calendars for round two. On March 14, they will do it again. When youre done marking your calendar, be sure to fill up your gas tank to the top, as the vote is happening again in only the one location in Spruce Grove.

The constituency still has time to make this better. We understand that in the big world of math, more constituents live in the Spruce Grove portion of the riding than do St. Albert. Lets call it a 60/40 split, which is why the vote is taking place there.

We would like to point out, however, that 100% of the candidates are from the St. Albert part of the riding; hence, most voters would be from our city, one could safely reason.

On busy Saturdays, families have so much on their plates in todays world, its unfortunate that the constituency offers only one location in a large geographic boundary. That decision has surely cost the process many votes.

Its always been done that way. Who cares? Much falls under that category that is being continually changed to adapt to todays world.

Thanks to the error, though, there is still time for the PC Spruce Grove St. Albert constituency to make this better. Add a second polling station in St. Albert, and show our portion of the constituency how much you value their vote.

Due to an error in the original voting process, it has been determinedthat a new vote in the Spruce Grove St. Albert PC riding to select the PC Candidate will take place on March 14, 2015. The initial vote had taken place on Saturday, February 21st which produced the original result that Rus Matichuk had won the vote and secured the nomination for the Spruce Grove St. Albert PC riding. Kathleen Range and Neil Korotash were also on the ballot.

Though I was surprised to learn of the error, the counts were so close

that the four ineligible voters could have had a significant impact on the results. Therefore in order to ensure a fair, democratic and transparent result I believe that PC Alberta has made the right decision, Said Neil Korotash.

It has been found that 4 ballots were cast by individuals ineligible to vote. The riding has been directed by PC Alberta to have this vote redone as the votes for the candidates was very close, said Carol Stewart, Chair of the nominations committee.

There are no plans for any other public forums at this time. All three candidates are letting their names stand on the ballot for the second vote.

Local working moms use net for work-life balanceMARCIE GRAYSt. Albert Leader

St. Albert women with home-based businesses are making good use of the newest and biggest marketplace: the Internet.

Its the best 24-hour marketing product out there, says Chelsie Hutchinson, owner of BasketBelle. She makes custom gift baskets for individuals and corporate clients such as realtors and lawyers, and she relied on word of mouth until she started a website five years ago.

A lot of people go on the Internet late at night or when they cant sleep. Those are the times you can be available for your customers and actually not have to be present.

Its not always cheap, or easy. Hutchinson paid a company $5,000 to build her first website but found it cluttered and hard to navigate. She ended up tearing it down and spending more money to hire a graphic designer to give her new website a bright, accessible feel.

The Oakmont mom would still like to open a retail store, but she struggles with how she would make that work while caring for her three sons aged 15, 11 and 9.

For me and my scheduleand my husband is very busyit was the right choice to put the expense into a website instead of opening a store, with the 9 to 5. And when

its your store, youre probably going to be there whether you like it or not, she laughs.

Another business duo uses the web to help with the work-life balance. A few years ago, Lori Waples and Rosa Poulin were looking for a way to work during school hours yet still volunteer at their childrens elementary school.

One young mom came to school very down because she was told that her house was a mess. She felt belittled and deflated, Waples recounts. She and Poulin volunteered to help clean up the home, and afterward they realized they could turn this kind of service into a business.

We started initially to help young moms, overwhelmed moms, to take a load off their plate to give them the gift of time. Weve all been there, running around like chickens with our heads cut off and feeling like were failing.

Today, Domestic Divas offers everything from housecleaning to gardening to running errands, and their client list has expanded to

seniors and people recovering from injuries and illness. They started with a goal of having three regular

customers a week, and they now have a client list of 45. Waples says they couldnt have done it without the Internet.

The first thing I did, before we even had a website, was the Facebook page, and advertised to everybody. And then the webpage got launched. I dont know where the business

would be without it, to be honest with you.Facebook spreads the word, directing potential customers

to the website where they learn the Domestic Divas belong to the Better Business Bureau. Waples says the BBB membership, along with the fact their company is bonded, reassures clients living in the age of Internet scams.

You have to have the intention of running a secure, legitimate business if youre going to put up $10,000 (for a bond). It separates us from the people on Kijiji that will advertise for $10 an hour.

Not that Waples is worried about competition. She says shes more concerned about growing too quickly and having to hand over control to others. This is the right size for us for now. Its much bigger than I ever anticipated.

...it was the right choice to put the expense into a website instead of opening a store.

Not just a mans job: St. Albert women breaking barriersMARCIE GRAYSt. Albert Leader

Margaret Williams knows what its like to work in a mans world.

On her first day as a mechanic at an Edmonton car dealership, she walked onto the shop floor to join her co-workers: about 20 men.

I was very, very nervous. But I was determined, the St. Albert businesswoman recalls.

Its International Womens Day this Sunday, and while we celebrate women who have forced open doors to jobs traditionally held by men, it has taken grit. Sometimes the door is slammed shut again; sometimes its opened wider. Williams says when she started at the dealership 35 years ago, the other mechanics were welcoming.

I did gain confidence, just by the way I was treated. They were very gracious to me. Even though they were watching me, I knew they werent criticizing. Even if I asked for help, they were always there to help me, to get my feet wet in the shop.

She might have been new to the shop, but she was an old hand around cars. Williams grew up on a farm in northern Alberta, where her father ran a garage to help make ends meet. As soon as I was able to lift a wrench, my dad had me helping him. She learned to do everything from fix brakes to overhaul engines, and eventually she earned her mechanics licence.

Today, Williams, 68, owns MAR Automotive on Riel Drive. Times have changed, but there are still many barriers to break. A group at the University of Alberta is tackling sciencetrying to encourage more women to

pursue scientific careers. Female undergrads make up more than half the population in fields such as psychology and biology, but theyre at 20 per cent or less when it comes to engineering, physics and computing science.

WISESTWomen in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technologyorganizes events for students from elementary to high school, providing opportunities to learn about careers in science and get hands-on experience.

A St. Albert teen, Grace Silver, won a coveted spot in the WISEST Summer Research Program at U of A last year. Silver, then 16, had been thinking about becoming a pharmacist, but working in a lab opened the Paul Kane students eyes to the world of research. I got to work in the laboratory every day doing the kinds of things youd imagine. You wear the lab coat and work in the fume hoods (clear ventilated cases that allow you to reach in to handle chemicals). And some of the things you wouldnt think about, analyzing the samples on these big equipment pieces, that you dont fully understand, she says with a laugh.

The grade 12 student is headed to U of A in the fall to study pharmacology and, thanks to her lab experience, shes hoping to pursue research. Silver isnt scared off by the fact shes in the minority.

Entering a field knowing theres going to be more men, its a little bit intimidating. But its also kind of exhilarating, thinking I get to be one of the trailblazers for women getting into these areas.

Back at her auto shop, Williams cheers on girls like Silver. Its all wide open. You can do whatever you please now. I dont think theres anything to hold you back. Photo: Metro Creative Services

The laws of our nation are fluid and adaptive to theneeds and changes of our society. Case in point is therecent Supreme Court decision giving the Government ofCanada one year to address the legislation concerning thelegalization of euthanasia or physician assisted suicide.Obviously this a complex issues on many levels. Themoral and ethical questions of this legislation aside, as isoften the case when a law is changed, the devil can be inthe details. For instance, Personal Care Directives which outline

the steps and limits of care you wish to receive at anend of life situation will require a serious second review. There are many scenarios and responsibilities that areaddressed in a Personal Care Directive. Do you wish tobe placed in an extended care facility, how much andwhat types of medication do you wish to receive, do youwant to be placed on a respirator? With the anticipatedchange in legislation those responsibilities could nowinclude assisted suicide. It can be a very heavy burdenfor one person to shoulder. Itsof critical importance to revisitwho is named in the Directiveto carry out your wishes. It maynow be time to change the personyou have appointed or to makechanges to include a committeeof people to deal with end oflife decisions. If more than oneperson is to be appointed, theDirective should include a tie-breaking mechanism. These ends of life decisions

could affect the size of yourestate. If someone takes you offlife support is your family stilleligible for life insurance or isthat considered suicide? Pension income could be affectedand influence the decision making process. Should theexecutor of your will or caregiver be remunerated for their

time and service? These and many more issues are all good reasons your

will and Personal Care Directives should be re-visited,discussed with your family and revised if necessary.Discussing your wishes with the entire family prior toa health crisis occurring will go a long way in ensuringyour wishes are met and to prevent accusations of self-interest or squabbles regarding limits of care. Keepin mind that one has to be of sound mind to sign suchdocuments.Baby Boomers have been asking about this in our

office. says Stacy Maurier of Weary & Co., To someextent politicians havent been listening, so the Courtshave brought it into being. If youre suffering now, thelegislation needs to move forward quickly and thats a bigpart of the short time line of one year. The legal profession has been reviewing these issues for

some time in anticipation of this legislation being created.Different circumstances will address mental capacity,

    BUSINESS

    BRITTANY KUSTRASpecial to the Leader

So many of the businesses we write about or provide coaching to at NABI are professional services or technology companies. Among the businesses who call NABI home are psychologists, accountants, engineers, IT firms and even drone developers. But some of the most ambitious, hardworking and savvy entrepreneurs we come across are those who have begun their own business in the trades.

Carpentry, pipefitting, plumbing and more, these industries will not disappear soon. In a 2013 report on the future of jobs in Canada, Macleans magazine reported that the country is in dire need of engineers, health workers and skilled tradespeople. Many of these trades, such as plumbing and carpentry, are dependent on the construction industry. Even with construction in f lux and itself dependent on the oil and gas

industry, tradespeople are in high demand.Beyond the jobs themselves, entrepreneurship

is growing faster in the trades than in many other industries. Stats Canada reported a jump of 9 per cent to 15 per cent entrepreneurship in 20 years. It may not sound like a huge jump, but thats actually 60-per-cent growthat a time when entrepreneurship rates in other industries have remained stable.

So if trades jobs are in such high demand, why step out on your own instead of maintaining a steady paycheque as an employee? Self-employed tradespeople are likely to earn a steady income as well, due to the demand in these fields. Like in many other industries, running your own business allows for setting your own schedule, controlling the direction of the

business and managing your own revenue.Unlike retail stores or accounting firms,

running a business in the trades often doesnt require the same level of administration and paperwork. According to the same Stats Canada

report, among self-employed carpenters, fully 94% did not have employees in 2007. Less time managing employees means more time meeting customers, earning money, and promoting your business to support growth. Sound like a great reason to start to me!

Alberta Business Incubator. Ready to run your own business as a carpenter, plumber

or electrician? Visit nabi.ca to book an appointment with a business coach today.
