From The Pastor’s Desk Christopher Columbus took a risk. He dreamed that if he sailed far enough to the west, he would eventually end up in the east. He believed the world was round. We all have dreams; they are very good for the soul. Dream your most deepest dream and you will only have just begun. Thank you for your patience last week by listening to me speak about our Grand Annual. Let us all pray as a family that this year’s Grand Annual collection will meet its goal. On next Wednesday Eve, October 14th at 7PM in our Church, we are asking all our volunteers to attend a talk on evangelization, followed by Benediction. A parish social will follow downstairs in our parish hall. Don’t forget our Feast, Friday eve, October 23 beginning with a Memorial Mass at 6PM for your deceased relatives. Then we will feast on an Italian Buffet with dancing to the tunes of Alan LaBella. Tickets are still available after all the Masses. Ah! Finally, there goes the bell, my macaroni and meatballs!

+ FAITH FORMATION NEWS

It was wonderful to see so many children attend the first Faith Formation classes last weekend. There are no classes this weekend due to the Columbus Day holiday. Classes will resume on Sunday, October 18th. Grades 1, 2 and Sacramental Prep meet before the 10AM Mass from 8:45 until 9:45AM. Grades 3 through 8 meet after the 10 AM Mass from 11AM until 12 Noon. First Communion Parents Meeting: There will be a mandatory parents meeting for the parents of children receiving First Holy Communion on Sunday, October 18th in the chapel form 8:45 until 9:45 AM. At least one parent should attend this meeting to learn about the Sacramental Preparation program, important dates, and a review of the rites of the Sacraments of First Penance and First Holy Communion. At the 10 A M Mass, parents and students will take part in the Rite of Enrollment for their children where the children will formally be presented to the Parish. There is still time to enroll your child/children for all Faith Formation classes. Either come to the rectory office to register or at the Faith Formation Office on Sunday mornings.

The October meeting for the Holy Name Society will take place next Sunday, October, October 18, 2015, immediately following the 7:30 AM Mass.

Confirmation 1: The “next bridge course” session will be held next Sunday, October 18, 2015. The students who have not attended the 8th grade in the Faith Formation Program are to attend the 12 Noon Mass along with their parents/guardians and the session that follows. The first regular class for all the confirmation Year 1 candidates will start on Sunday, October 25, 2015. The candidates are to attend the 12 noon Mass, sign the Mass attendance sheet that will be kept in the church vestibule and attend the session that follows in the Chapel. Confirmation Year 2: Confirmation Program Year 2 begins on Sunday October 25th. + BIOGRAPHY OF SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA

St. Anthony and the Child Jesus Next to Our Lady, the Saint most often painted with the Child Jesus is St. Anthony of Padua. This image of Anthony and the Child Jesus is found in chapels and churches all around the world. Everywhere missionaries carried the Good News of the Gospel, this depiction is found. According to one legend, Count Tiso who was a friend of Anthony, owned a palatial home about 11 miles from Padua. On the evening while in fervent prayer, the Child Jesus appeared to St. Anthony. Passing by St. Anthony’s room, Count Tiso saw a glorious light coming from the room. Falling to his knees outside the door, the Count saw St Anthony deep in conversation with the Child. When the vision ended, St. Anthony saw the Count kneeling and begged him not to reveal what he had seen until after St Anthony’s death. In 1946, Anthony was declared a “Doctor of the Universal Church” with a special designation of “Doctor of the Gospel”. Very often the Child Jesus is pictured with St. Anthony as standing on the Holy Bible. Often the child appears to be rising out of the written Word itself. Prayer to Saint Anthony Holding the Child Jesus Blessed Saint Anthony, Jesus was the center of your life. It must be the same for me, for every Christian. Your purity of soul, your humbleness, your simple radiant faith fits well with the gentle and humble Savior, who was a little child to his Father in heaven. Help us to give up our desire for our power and control. Keep us from a merely intellectual faith, and may we be totally dependent on Jesus as you were, with the helplessness of a little child. Amen.

* COLUMBUS DAY – MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2015

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa Italy in October, 1451. He died on May 20, 1506 at the age of 54 in Castile, Spain. He was a map maker, studied astronomy, a navigator and a marine explorer. Because of the Spice Trade with Asia, he was convinced that a shorter route was West, not East. He was very intelligent and knew about the trade winds which he followed across the Atlantic and landed in the Bahamas that he called at that time, “San Salvador”. He was the first person to plant the Cross of Christ in the new land. Sailing into the unknown, he never gave up in that voyage because he knew he was right. There are only 3 statues of Christopher Columbus in the United States and St. Anthony’s has one of them.

THOUGHTS WHILE WALKING…. “Then the LORD said to him, ‘What is that in your hand’?...” (Exodus 4:2) What’s in Your Hand? Do you ever feel inadequate for what you are called to do? You are not the first one to feel that way. So often, when we think of Moses, we remember him as the great spiritual giant who led the Israelites out of captivity. But did you know that Moses doubted himself, too? He didn’t feel equipped. In fact, he had a stuttering problem that made him self-conscious. God simply said to him, “What do you have in your hand”? God showed Moses that it did not matter what he thought he needed. The God of the universe can take what you have and turn it into whatever it needs to be in order for you to accomplish what He has called you to do. What’s in your hand today? It may not seem like much, but God wants to use it. He wants to take you to places you never dreamed. He wants to pour out his blessing and favor so you can live the blessed life He has in store for you. A Prayer for Today Heavenly Father, I thank You and praise You. I thank You and praise You for the many blessings You have bestowed upon me in my life. Today I give to You all that I am and all that I have. I give my heart, mind, body, memory, intellect, and everything I am. I invite You to come into me and to fill every part of my being and use me for Your glory. Remove the fears anxieties and obsessions of my heart, mind, and body that obstruct me from being filled by You that I may be fully used for Your glory. I ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
