FormerEnglandgoalkeeper,NigelMartynwasborn

inStAustell.

160-year-oldStAustellBreweryisoneoftheoldest,still

familyrunbreweriesinGreatBritain.It’sbeenbrewingbeer

since1851whenthebusinesswasbegunbyWalterHicks.

WalterHicksstartedoutasamaltstersupplyingmalttoinns

andalehouseswithintheStAustellarea.In1863hebought

theSevenStars.Thepubisbelievedtobetheplacewherehe

brewedandpulledhisfirstpintofbeer.

In1988,thechinaclayindustrycelebrateditshighest-ever

annualtonnagehavingproducedastaggering3,277,000tons

ofchinaclaythatyear!

BodelvaPitproducedapinkish-redclay,whichwasfamous

WhealMartynistheonlymuseumintheworldwhereyou

Another1600’smanorhouse(Tewington)becamethe

GeneralWolfeInn,onthecornerofBodminRoadand

TruroRoad.

Penrice,thehomeoftheSawlefamilyfrom1596to1971is

nowpartofPenriceCommunityCollege,thefirstcollegein

Cornwalltospecialiseinlanguages.

October18th1940wasStAustell’sGreatFirewheneight

shopsandacaféweredestroyed,andfiveothersincluding

Woolworthsandaninnwerebadlydamaged.

TregonisseyHousewasthesiteofStAustellBrewery’sfirst

steamBrewery,builtin1870.

StAustellrailwaystationopenedon4May1859onthe

hillsideabovethetowncentre.

HolyTrinitychurchwasoriginallybuiltinthe13th-14th

centuries.Thebaptisimalfontdatesfromthelate1200’s,

whenBishopBronescombededicatedthesite.Theearly

churchbuildingremainstodayinthechancel;theroundpier

andlowpointedarchesofthesoutharcadeare13thcentury.

OutsidetheRedBankandtheChurchyardistheBullRing,so

calledbecauseofthebull-baitingsformerlyheldonthisspot.

Historically,StAustellhaditsownweekoffeastenactivities

surroundingthecelebrationoftheFeastofSaintAustol

(traditionallycelebratedinStAustellontheThursday

ofWhitsun)thelastofwhichtookplacein1946.

Betweenthelate1500sand1800smostofStAustell’slocal

populationwereinvolvedintinmining.Thedemandfortin

wassohighthatin1580,QueenElizabethinvitedGerman

minerstothearea.Today’slocalfamilynamesofLobb,Kessell,

Sleeman,StarkandWaldroncamefromthesesettlers.
