The Proclamation of the Word First Reading Reader: A reading from the first book of Samuel Elkanah is on his annual pilgrimage to the temple at Shiloh. He enjoys the sacrificial meal with his two wives, Peninnah and Hannah, as well as with his children by Peninnah. He loves Hannah in spite of her barrenness. She can no longer take Peninnah’s taunts. 1 Samuel 1:4-20 4On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 5but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. 6Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” 9After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. 11She made this vow: “O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.” 12As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” 15But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.” 17Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.” 18And she

said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. 19They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the Lord.”

Second Reading (Somo La Pili)

Gospel Hymn; ‘This is My Father's World’

This is my Father’s world, And to my list’ning ears

All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world:

I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas—

His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world: The birds their carols raise,

The morning light, the lily white, Declare their Maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair;

In the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world:

Oh, let me ne’er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong,

God is the ruler yet. This is my Father’s world,

The battle is not done: Jesus who died shall be satisfied,

And earth and Heav’n be one. Gospel Reading The Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark

As Jesus emerges from teaching in the temple courtyard, his disciples note the enormous stone blocks yet to be incorporated into the Temple. Jesus replies that the Temple, impressive as it is, will not survive the end of the age. Mark 13:1-8 As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” 2Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” 3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.

The Sermon

(Silence for Reflection)

Apostle's Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Msomi: BABA yetu, uliye mbinguni, Jina lako litukuzwe. Ufalme wako uje. Mapenzi yako yatimizwe duniani, Kama yatimizwavyo mbinguni. Utupe leo riziki zetu. Utusamehe makosa yetu, Kama sisi tunavyowasamehe waliotukosea. Usitutie majaribuni; Lakini utuokoe maovuni. Amina.
