EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Being Faithful Stewards  of God’s Grace   Have you ever been entrusted with an important message to deliver to someone? If so, you prob‐ably worked hard to make sure it was delivered properly. Two thousand years later, God is still looking for people willing to become stewards of his grace. He is calling you to proclaim the surpris‐ing news of salvation.  Why talk about our call to evan‐gelize on the Feast of the Epiphany? Because today we celebrate the way Jesus’ glory was revealed to the Magi. Today we celebrate the way the Magi saw something special in this boy from Nazareth—something special enough to make them want to offer him valuable gifts.  This is a high calling indeed! Every time we share the mes‐sage of God’s grace, we offer people a chance to have their own epiphany. We can go so far as to say that just by living out the gospel, our lives can become an epiphany—a glori‐ous manifestation of the power of God to transform human hearts!  Questions for Reflection 

Jesus said that he is the light of the world. In what way is Jesus the light of your life? For example, do you speak with him daily in prayer? Is he the light that guides your daily de‐cisions?  

In the Gospel, we again see the humility of God – he chose insignificant Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus instead of Jerusalem the capital city and home of the great temple. How important is humility to you as a virtue? Would your relationships with others, or your dealing with your family, be described as humble? Why or why not?  

Herod had told the Magi to “go and search diligently” for Christ. As we start the New Year, what steps can you take to seek the Lord more each day and allow him to occupy a greater part in your life?  Take some time now to pray that in 2013 you would be faithful stewards of God’s grace, includ‐ing sharing the good news of salvation with others.

Cardinal George to Make Presentation on RELIGIOUS  

FREEDOM          Cardinal George has begun a series of talks on  religious  freedom  in each of the  vicariates.    Cardinal  George  will engage  parishioners  about  the importance  of  the  religious  freedom issues  with  respect  to  the  new mandates   and   regu lat ions surrounding  the  health  care  laws. There  will  be  time  for  people  to discuss and ask questions. Everyone is encourage  to  participate.    The  date for Vicariate IV is:

BISHOPS URGE RETENTION OF CHARITABLE DEDUCTION, OTHER TAX CREDITS AND PROGRAMS AS 

NATION APPROACHES  “FISCAL CLIFF”

WASHINGTON—Catholic institutions rely on the charitable deduction to feed, house, clothe, educate, and care for mil‐lions of people around the world,” said the bishops who over‐see the domestic and international justice and peace efforts of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and should be protected in any final agreement to avoid the “fiscal cliff.”  In a December 14 letter to Congress, Bishop Stephen E. Blaire of Stockton, California, and Bishop Richard E. Pates of Des Moines, Iowa, called the tax system an “important tool” for raising adequate revenue and fulfilling the responsibility of ensuring basic human needs, such as food, clothing, health care, work and education, are accessible to all people. “One way our tax system attempts to accomplish this is with the charitable deduction, which encourages taxpayers to sup‐port private charity, religion, and education,” the bishops wrote.   In their letter, Bishop Blaire and Bishop Pates also noted the importance of protecting the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, Emergency Unemployment Compensation, poverty‐focused international assistance, and other programs that “help guarantee basic human rights for millions of peo‐ple.”  Bishop Blaire also joined other Christian leaders of the Circle of Protection. . . in releasing principles regarding the ongoing budget negotiations surrounding the fiscal cliff, and calling on Republicans and Democrats to adhere to the basic moral principle of protecting programs that serve low‐income peo‐ple. Circle of Protection leaders also called for protecting the charitable deduction.  Statistics on the number of people served by Catholic chari‐ties is available online: www.usccb.org/about/media‐relations/statistics/health‐care‐social‐service.cfm  The full text of the bishops’ letter is also available online: http://www.usccb.org/issues‐and‐action/human‐life‐and‐dignity/federal‐budget/upload/federal‐budget‐letter‐congress‐2012‐12‐14.pdf  The Circle of Protection principles are available online at: http://circleofprotection.us/pdf/Fiscal%20Cliff%20COP%20Press%20Release_12%2019%2012.pdf. .

2013 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS “Love Never Fails!” 1 Cor 13:8

Chicago, grudzień 2012 Drodzy Bracia i Siostry w Chrystusie Panu!

Kilka miesięcy temu zwróciłem się do Was, pisząc na temat jedności wspólnoty Kościoła rzymsko-katolickiego, obejmującej nas, Polonię, żyjącą tu i teraz. Wciąż, niestety, w sercach i umysłach ludzi wierzących, tworzących naszą rzymsko-katolicką wspólnotę, panuje niepokój i zamieszanie, podżegane przez tego, który jest wrogiem tejże jedności i posługuje się swoimi metodami oraz ludźmi, którzy na wszelki sposób chcą tę jedność rozbić. W związku z tym, zwróciłem się z oficjalną prośbą do Stolicy Apostolskiej, o zabranie głosu we wspomnianej kwestii, aby nie było żadnej wątpliwości. Chodzi przecież o sprawę dotyczącą wyznawanej przez nas wiary. W odpowiedzi na moją prośbę, Stolica Apostolska udzieliła odpowiedzi: „ (…) z uwagi na to, że także z innych krajów dotarły sygnały odnośnie działalności wymienionego stowarzyszenia („Rzymsko-Katolickie Stowarzyszenie Papieża Leona XIII”) oraz osób za niego odpowiedzialnych, wobec których istnieje podejrzenie oszustwa, Sekretariat Stanu z pomocą innych Dykasterii, szczegółowo zapoznaje się z sytuacją kanoniczną, w celu ewentualnego wysłania okólnika do przedstawicielstw papieskich. Jego Ekscelencja będzie mógł powiadomić Archidiecezję Chicago, że wspomniane „Rzymsko-Katolickie Stowarzyszenie Papieża Leona XIII” nie jest stowarzyszeniem katolickim i że Christian Lambert i Dawid Bell nie są biskupami katolickimi”. (Załączam kopię listu z Nuncjatury Apostolskiej). Wobec istniejącej sytuacji, w trosce o wiernych Kościoła rzymsko-katolickiego, pragnę nakreślić teraz, w sposób bardzo ogólny, jedną z fundamentalnych, teologicznych zasad, dotyczących Kościoła, będącego wspólnotą wiary. Św. Paweł w Liście do Efezjan wprowadza nas w sens Kościoła, będącego wspólnotą, z postanowienia woli Bożej. Jest to także jedno ze źródeł teologicznych naszej wizji Kościoła. Kościół jest szczególną wspólnotą i różni się od innych wspólnot tym, że zbudowany jest „na fundamencie apostołów i proroków, gdzie głowicą węgła jest sam Chrystus Jezus” (Ef 2,20). Wcielone Słowo Boże, Jezus Chrystus, posyła swojemu Kościołowi Ducha Świętego, który jest Duchem Miłości Ojca i Syna. Ten fakt leży u podstaw katolickości Kościoła. Kardynał Franciszek George, pasterz naszej wspólnoty diecezjalnej, powiedział kiedyś, że „Ameryka jest wspólnotą ludzi, związaną przez prawo, a nie przez przynależność do grup etnicznych”. Prawo jednak, samo w sobie, nie ma mocy zbudowania prawdziwej wspólnoty. Każdy kierowca na drodze wie, że jest zobowiązany do przestrzegania prawa drogowego, ale to nie sprawia, że stajemy się przez to prawo „wspólnotą drogową”.

My, katolicy, przez Chrzest włączeni do wspólnoty Kościoła, jesteśmy wciąż zapraszani do budowania i rozwijania tejże wspólnoty. Zachowujemy przy tym, ochraniamy i promujemy niekończący się szacunek dla indywidualnej osoby ludzkiej oraz robimy wszystko dla jej zbawienia. Każda osoba ludzka, zjednoczona w miłości z innymi osobami, staje się obrazem Boga w Trójcy świętej Jedynego, który jest wspólnotą Osób: Ojca i Syna, i Ducha Świętego. Ta jedność w miłości jest dla nas darem i wzorem pomagającym w budowaniu wspólnoty. Ilekroć, motywowani miłością, przyprowadzamy człowieka do Boga, przez Jezusa Chrystusa w Duchu Świętym, wyraźniejszy staje się dla nas, chrześcijan, sens wspólnoty Osób Trójcy Przenajświętszej. Znajduje on swoje odbicie w naszych rodzinach, parafiach, ludach, narodach, krajach, itd. Kościół, założony przez Jezusa Chrystusa, drugą osobę Trójcy Przenajświętszej, istnieje mocą Ducha Świętego, który pochodzi od Ojca i Syna - wspólnoty Osób. Św. Paweł pisze: „W Nim zespalana cała budowla rośnie na świętą w Panu świątynię, w Nim i wy także wznosicie się we wspólnym budowaniu, by stanowić mieszkanie Boga, przez Ducha” (Ef 2,21-22).

Chrystus jest niewidzialną głową tej wspólnoty, widzialną zaś głową, jest każdorazowy następca św. Piotra, zastępca Chrystusa na ziemi, którym jest biskup Rzymu, papież. Jest on pomostem pomiędzy Kościołami lokalnymi, stróżem wiary i moralności w świętym Kościele rzymsko-katolickim. Według nauki II Soboru Watykańskiego: „Kościół Chrystusowy, ustanowiony i zorganizowany na tym świecie jako społeczność, trwa w Kościele katolickim, rządzonym przez następcę Piotra oraz biskupów pozostających w komunii, chociaż i poza jego organizmem znajdują się liczne pierwiastki uświęcenia i prawdy” (KK, 8).

II Kolekta w weekend 13 stycznia zostanie zebrana na rzecz Kościoła w Ameryce Łacińskiej 

PROŚBA O POMOC DLA MATEUSZA Zwracamy się  z gorącą prośbą do wszystkich ludzi dobrego serca o wsparcie funduszu na pomoc w rehabilitacji naszego syna, Mateuszka.  Mateusz zachorowal na porażenie mózgowe w sześć miesięcy po urodzeniu w wyniku nieodpowiedniego zrobienia szczepienia.  Na rehabilitację jeżdzimy dwa razy w ciągu roku do Polski do Wongrowiec‐Puszczykowo i Rogożno koło Poznania.  Dzięki Bogu oraz intensywnej terapii, Mateusz się wzmocnił i powoli zaczyna nabierać 

sił.  Zaczyna chodzić, ale jeszcze z pomocą drugich, lecz nadal nie mówi.  W maju Mateusz skończył 9 lat.  Rehabilitacje są bardzo kosztowne.  Jak każdy rodzic pragniemy by w przyzłości Mateuszek był i sprawny i samodzielny, dlatego dzięki przychylności ks. Proboszcza w przyszły weekend przyjeżdżamy do Waszej wspólnoty by rozprowadzać płyty CD z Góralsko‐Religijnymi pieśniami w cenie $7 dolarów.  Wszystkie pieniądze, które uzuskamy ze sprzedaży zostaną przeznaczone n rehabilitację Mateusza.  Już w tej chwili pragniemy złożyć staropolskie Bóg Zapłać za każdą pomoc jaką uzyskamy od Waszej wspólnoty zjednoczonej przy tutejszej parafii Sw. Ferdynanda.  Serdecznie dziękujemy.  Rodzice wraz z babcią Mateusza

TRZEJ MĘDRCY              

W yruszyli w drogę spodziewając się cudu, oczekując spotkania wielkiego władcy. O tych oczekiwaniach mówią dary, które ze sobą wzięli, a także fakt, że o drogę zapytali Heroda – 

jednego z wielkich ówczesnego świata. Potężnego władcę, wizjonera, budowniczego, przyjaciela cesarza Octawiana Augusta.   

To, co zastali u celu miało prawo rozczarowywać. Nędzna grota pod Betlejem, robotnik, jego młoda żona i malutkie dziecko, w towarzystwie pasterzy – klasy niemalże wyklętej w Izraelu. Znamy to doświadczenie z naszego życia – gdy dążymy do czegoś, podejmujemy działanie, zaangażowanie, popycha nas do niego wizja celu. W jakiś sposób atrakcyjna. Nie tylko w tych wielkich sprawach życiowych – gdy podejmujemy studia, zakładamy rodzinę, wychowujemy dzieci, ale też w tych prostych codziennych sprawach. Na przykład przygotowując wigilijną kolację, myślimy o rodzinie, która się na niej spotka, o atmosferze świąt i miłości, o tym, że powinno być radośnie, bez nieporozumień. Albo podejmując zaangażowanie, chcąc zrobić coś dla dobra innych – również motywuje nas pewna wizja celu, tego jak owo dobro ma wyglądać, jak to zaangażowanie powinno przebiegać.   

Często jednak jest tak, że to, co zastajemy u celu rozczarowuje. Bliscy przyszli na wigilię z pretensjami, nasze zaangażowanie nie wzbudza entuzjazmu u tych, do których jest kierowane… Mędrcy jednak nie wyrazili rozczarowania. Upadli przed dziecięciem na twarz i oddali Mu pokłon. Nie zawahali się też dać darów, które ze sobą przynieśli. Dali złoto – symbol tego, co najcenniejsze, najszlachetniejsze, symbol mądrości, kadzidło – znak modlitwy wznoszonej ku Bogu i mirrę – symbol bólu, cierpienia, trudu. Mędrców nie zmylił zastany widok. W istocie złożyli oni hołd największemu Panu i Władcy, Zbawicielowi, Bogu.   

Warto wziąć to sobie do serca. Nie wahać się ofiarować z siebie tego, co w nas najcenniejsze, nie rezygnować z modlitwy, podejmować trud. Tak jak z niemowlęcia wyrósł potężny władca, tak w tych okruchach dobra, które teraz pośród nędzy możemy dostrzec, objawia się już chwała Boża, którą z pewnością w pełni poznamy w swoim czasie.

My daughter Sarah is twenty‐six and my son Paul is twenty‐three. I’m not sure how that happened, but as I wrote in a song lyric to my wife a few weeks ago, “We’ve been around the block, I know, and nothing now won’t make it so…” Having just turned the page on another year, I am reminded again that time moves on, and the children I once held in my arms are out on their own now, or pretty close to it. Nonetheless, whenever the opportunity pre‐sents itself‐‐like, when they are going out with friends for the eve‐ning and I’m in on the plan‐‐I still repeat for them a mantra I’ve been singing for years and I’ll probably keep singing as long as I have breath: Be safe. Be smart. Make good life choices. I was say‐ing the words a couple of days ago to Sarah via a cell phone con‐versation when I heard of her plans for a recent Saturday night as Gail and I were headed for an out‐of‐town commitment, and as soon as I finished, Sarah responded in a somewhat annoyed voice, “I know these things.” And of course, she does. And that’s when it hit me‐‐in an epiphany moment, of sorts‐‐that while we know the things we need to do to follow the Christ, we don’t always do them. Heck. I don’t know about you, but on my worst days, I rarely do them. We all know the commandments, but do we follow them? I mean, really? I’ve never worshipped a golden calf, but I’ve put material choices be‐fore my spirituality. And not just once or twice. I honored my Mom and Dad when they were alive, but I let them down plenty at the same time. I’ve never killed anybody, but I’ve been mean‐

spirited and hurtful to people I love. I’ve never cheated on my wife, but I have not given her the attention she deserves on any number of occasions. I think I do pretty well on following the let‐ter of the law (I know these things), but I’ve had my share of fail‐ure when it comes to following the spirit of the law. And just be‐tween you and me, I think this will be my bigger concern come Judgment Day.  On this Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, we recall the magi arriving in Jerusalem saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him hom‐age.” We recall Herod plotting to kill the infant king, directing the travelers to send back word of Christ’s whereabouts, “that I too may go and do him homage…” And we recall the magi being over‐joyed when they found Mary and her newborn son, so “…they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” In another epiphany moment of sorts, I pause now to wonder what gifts I might place before the Child today. The an‐swer to this may seem apparent at first blush. I need only to put on Christ. You know. Compassion. Forgiveness. Caring. But this is a time of resolution for many people, and while some resolve to lose weight, to stop smoking, to get out of debt, others resolve simply to be a better person, which, as I see it, is the put‐on‐Christ approach. Easy to say. Hard to do. Just ask Sarah or me. We know these things.
