In the Wake of Tragedy:How Should We Talk To The Children?
The mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando - which at lastcount left 50 dead and 53 more wounded - serves as a starkreminder that violent and unsettling news is never far fromus. These killings marked the largest mass shooting inUnited States history, authorities said, and the nation's worstterrorist attack since 9/11 .
For most of us, the personal impact may seem far removed, but even if we didn't know one of the victims or one oftheir family members or friends, we still must reconcilefeelings of insecurity that emerge from such an event. Andwith our 24-hour news cycle and online sharing throughsocial media, children may need additional support to helpmake sense of it all.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Admini-stration (SAMHSA), offers a number of tips on the mosteffective ways to help kids cope:
Set the example. Children will quickly pick up on the emo-tional cues of the adults in their lives. Maintaining a calmattitude and avoiding appearing anxious or frightened willhelp them model the behavior.
Be honest. It's not helpful to pretend the event didn't happenor wasn't serious. Children may respond by thinking youare too afraid to tell the truth.
Being upset is okay. It's important to reassure children thatbeing upset is to be expected. Feelings of anger are okaytoo, but kids need help from parents to express those feelingsin an appropriate way.
Be mindful of their age. The conversation must be ageappropriate. The youngest kids need brief, simple informa-tion. Older children may have very defined ideas about thecauses and solutions to violent acts. It's important that theyfeel heard and affirmed. Be a good listener.
Offer reassurance. If the event is not close to home andnot an immediate threat, emphasize the fact they are in asafe place.
People are getting help. Explain that emergency workersand other officials are doing everything they can to helpthose who were affected.
Limit exposure. National news outlets provide repetitiousreporting and often air graphic video coverage again andagain. Minimizing the number of times children watch thenews will help lower their anxiety levels.
Monitor your stress. Adults are not immune to many ofthe same feelings of worry, anger and frustration. Connectwith friends, family, religious leaders or mental health ex-perts who can help your process your thoughts.
Use faith practices. Use the practices of our religious tra-ditions to help provide ritual and support.
