St. John Cantius Parish The Catholic Community of Bridesburg Today is the first Sunday of Lent, the season of repentance, of turning back to the Lord's plan for us, of preparing for or recalling our baptismal commitment. We can ask God for the grace to see our lives afresh: "Who am I, Lord, and how can I praise, love, and serve you best?" Today's readings help us focus. Genesis reminds us of our origin: God created us out of clay, breathing life into us. Without God, we are nothing. Saint Paul's Letter to the Romans consoles us. Although we have a tendency to ignore God, Jesus' sacrifice restores us as God's children. The Gospel of Matthew astonishes us by showing how God chose to become like us, even allowing the devil to tempt him with the very sins that we battle. Our gracious God knows exactly what our lives are like. God wants to accompany us and show us how to be happy forever. THE ONE AND ONLY LENT No matter how many Lenten seasons we've experienced, we can embark on this year's journey as if it is the only Lent we will ever have. We can pray, fast, and offer sacrifices in specific, generous ways. Jesus is our model. Jesus spared nothing of himself when he went into the desert for forty days and forty nights. He didn't bring along computer games to divert himself or a stockpile of snacks for emergencies. No, Jesus was all in. The Gospel tells us that the devil waited till after the forty days of sacrifice to ambush Jesus. Just when our Lord was at his weakest, frail with hunger, the devil came to tempt him. Relying on the Word of God, Jesus resisted all temptations. Then, and only then, did angels come to minister to Jesus. If we imitate Jesus and go all in this Lent, we can expect to suffer. We can also depend upon God to send help just exactly when we need it. 4415 Almond Street ~ Philadelphia, PA 19137 Rectory Phone 215-535-6667 Rectory Fax: 215-535-7107 Parish Email [email protected] Parish Website www.stjohncantiusparish.org Rectory Hours Monday - Friday, 9:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Letter From Pastor During Lent we reflect upon our mortality, our weakness, our starving for a better relationship with our God and neighbor. As we journey through Lent and keep our Lenten promises, we should see a difference in our lives - we experience life differently. Fr. Konstanty and I hope that you take full advantage of the Masses and devotions that are offered in the parish during Lent. Gorskie Zale (Polish sung Lamentations) will be sung before the 11:30 Polish Mass on Sunday. Also, the Stations of the Cross on Thursdays (English) and Fridays (Polish) at 6:30 P.M. Mass will be celebrated each evening at 7:00: Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings in Polish; Tuesday and Thursday evenings in English. Don’t forget that our Chapel is open every Wednesday at noon as Jesus is present on our altar for adoration until 6:30 PM. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of our Polish Community for their two donations this past week. One was of $3500.00 and the other was of $500.00. These donations will help pay for half of the cost to install the new sound system in the Chapel. We thank them for their generosity. Looking for something special to do for Lent? The Aid for Friends has been a most beneficial program in our parish as we provide meals to the homebound in our parish and in the Bridesburg community. We are grateful to the many men and women who provide meals and those who deliver them weekly. Service is one of the primary missions of the Church and is an excellent way to live out the Season of Lent in a very positive way. If you would like to participate in this wonderful mission of service, please call Dori Michalak (215-533-4787) or the Rectory during office hours.

Also something you could do for Lent is read the book written by Matthew Kelly that was given to you on Christmas Day - Resisting Happiness - as part of our Dynamic Catholic Program. This book is a perfect book to read during the season of Lent and I highly recommend and suggest it for your Lenten Reading. I arranged for my spiritual director, Catherine Joanne to come on March 30th and April 6th to give reflections derived from this book as part of our Lenten Program here at St. John Cantius. If you did not get a copy of this book, you may get one in the Church, Chapel or at the Rectory during office hours.

May God bless us all during the Lenten Season. OUR DYNAMIC CATHOLIC THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: “God is in our midst and is patiently waiting for us to turn to him.” AND A SECOND THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: “If you want to stop worrying, don’t try to do it on your own. God is right beside you, and he wants to help.”

Stacje Drogi Krzyżowej w czwartki (angielski) i piątki (polskiego) w 18:30. Również każdego wieczoru będą celebrowane Msze Św. o 19:00: poniedziałek, środę i piątek wieczorem w języku polskim; Wtorki i czwartki wieczorem w języku angielskim. "

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in various forms of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Some people suggest that this recovers an ancient tradition in the church, when in fact the practice belongs to a later time. The custom of showing the consecrated host to the people, encased in a vessel called a monstrance, developed in a period of history when even very pious people received Communion only rarely. The opportunity to see the host raised high above the head of the priest at Mass, or to see the host exposed outside of Mass, was thought by many to be a form of spiritual Communion. Without question, our Catholic practice of reserving the consecrated host both for adoration and Communion of the sick and dying is a cherished tradition. Over the next few weeks, we’ll look at how these traditions developed and how the Church envisions reservation and adoration today. We do this by the light of the liturgical reforms that have restored a heightened appreciation for how receiving the Body and Blood of Christ is central to our worship. “Perpetual Adoration,” “Reservation,” “Benediction,” and “Reposition” are all part of the Catholic vocabulary. Often the terms are misused, and a tangled history—as well as widely varying practices in our parishes—adds to the confusion. Many Catholics today have never participated in Benediction, or even spent time in adoration on Holy Thursday night. There’s plenty of interesting history, much of it surprising and challenging, and we will do our best to inform you along the way.

WE'RE WORTH IT When we commit ourselves to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving this Lent, we will encounter obstacles. The devil hates to see us grow closer to God. Even if our Lenten progress is microscopic, the devil wants to thwart us. We are God's beloved children, so we are valuable. We are worth the devil's time. Expect difficulty. Expect obstacles. Expect temptation. Above all, expect God's unfailing help. Staying close to God's Word will strengthen us, as it strengthened Jesus in the desert. Today's Gospel shows us that Jesus desires to accompany us, especially in our weakest and most difficult moments. Whatever temptations we face, Jesus understands. Whatever sacrifices we make, Jesus offers them with us. Whatever goodness we show to encourage others, our Lord rejoices with all the angels and saints. Let us approach this Lent as if it is the only Lent we will ever have. God wants to do great things for us in this holy season.
