COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

SAFE USE OF TECHNOLOGY

The Catholic Schools’ Parent Assembly, via Peta Rourke, recently arranged for Andrew Burgess to run workshops to assist parents in the important task of setting guidelines and boundaries for their children when using digital technology. Andrew gave those in attendance the following “family tips”:

turning on SafeSearch is an easy way to help you hide images, search results and videos intended just for adults;

enable YouTube safety mode;

increase your password strength; use a combination of letters and numbers. Use different passwords and make them hard to guess, keep them safe. Never share them;

create a strong password for your WiFi network at home;

set limits on devices and internet use at home;

create some house rules for internet usage;

set a good example with mobile phone and internet use;

be courteous and respectful online. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Show sensitivity to others (including cultural awareness);

use acceptable and appropriate language, publish acceptable and appropriate content;

think before you hit send, post or upload or comment;

never create an EVENT on social media – public or private;

know your children’s online friends;

don’t tag photos in Facebook (they can be searched);

don’t open messages from people you don’t know. They could contain viruses or be trying to sell you something;

don’t get phished; and

watch your bank account. Respond immediately to any unexpected withdrawals or spending.

Andrew also gave the following advice:

privacy settings – check them with your child, talk about privacy issues;

location settings – turn off geo tagging;

accepting followers/friends – if you don’t know them personally don’t accept them (having friends you don’t know places you at risk;

avoid portraits – use avatars;

talk to your children about what they are downloading, posting, privacy settings, grooming, bullying, digital footprint, phishing, copyright, inappropriate photos/selfies;

report abuse – encourage children to report misuse/abuse and support their friends (active bystanders);

there is no such thing as safe sexting;

online actions sometimes = offline consequences; and

time online = risk.

Printed elsewhere in this newsletter are useful websites and links. Could I suggest you take some time to scan these and discuss relevant issues with your children.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Coaching Staff It is impossible to run a good sporting program without dedicated staff to coach and take teams to competitions; quite often (because of the size of our Diocese) this means travelling long distances and being away from family overnight. A sincere thank you to the 38 staff members who have coached sporting teams this year and therefore made it possible for students to compete.

UNIFORM 2014 REMINDERS As many students have outgrown their uniforms in 2014, I thought it an apt time to remind parents and students that our uniform requirements are clearly outlined on our College website. To avoid issues when school resumes in 2015 please note the following reminders:

School Shoes - Many parents will need to purchase new school shoes for their sons and daughters in January 2015. Please remember that the school requires these to be plain black, polishable lace-up ALL leather shoes. (No high tops, boots or ripple soles, skate type shoes or logos. No buckle shoes or open top shoes. Heels should not be more than 2.5cm.) Sport shoes must be proper sports shoes. School shoes are not to be worn as part of the sports uniform.

Please note images of a selection of correct and incorrect shoes can be found on the College website under ‘Quick Links”. Please be aware Nike and Converse school shoes are not permitted as they have rubber toes and ARE NOT all leather.

Girls Skirts- Skirts MUST be KNEE-LENGTH.

Piercing and Hair Styles and Colour- Some students choose to have piercings and variation to hair colour and styles in the holidays. A reminder that these must comply with school rules when students return in 2015. Please note: Band-Aids are not permitted to be worn to cover new piercings. SUBJECT AND EXCURSION FEES I would like to thank the many families who make significant sacrifices in prioritising the payment of College Service fees and Parish Tuition fees. This is, without doubt, a strong endorsement of the work we do here at St Joseph’s Regional College in the formation of our students ‘to become the best possible people they can be’.

As we approach the conclusion of Semester 2 at the College, I would request continued attentiveness to keeping accounts up-to-date. In this respect, I would remind families (as per my letter at the beginning of the year) that the College is not able to distribute reports if accounts are not paid and outstanding library books have not been returned. In this respect, I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and would ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is imperative that you contact me to make an alternative arrangement.

With regard to major projects in Timber Technologies & Metal Technologies, these fees must be paid prior to major works being released.

God Bless

Jim Dempsey College Principal

END OF YEAR PROGRAM

YEAR 7-11 EXAMS In an effort to keep students engaged in learning for a greater proportion of Term 4, Semester 2, Year 7-11 examinations are being conducted from Wednesday, 3rd December (Week 9) to Tuesday, 9th December (Week 10) for Years 7-10 while Year 11 exams will continue to Friday, 12th December. Having the exams later in the term has proven to be very successful as students were on task for longer and we made best use of the teaching and learning time in Term 4. These dates have been advertised in the parent calendar. A copy of the exam timetable is included in this newsletter.

POST-EXAM STUDENT LEAVE From Wednesday, 10th December to Friday, 12th December three Post-Exam Student Leave non-class days for students have been scheduled, to enable staff to complete marking, collate marks, and prepare reports and awards. Students who have not completed all exams will do so on these days. Supervision will be available at the College for any student whose parent is not able to supervise them at home during the non-class days. Research confirms the importance of feedback from teachers for effective student learning. Students will return to school from Monday, 15th December until Thursday, 18th December to review exam papers, receive reports and attend academic award ceremonies. These days are compulsory for all students.

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION Advent Season During this Advent season, our students will be using our new chapel to participate in a reflection on the theme of hope, peace, love and joy. In the busyness of this time of year, it is wonderful to take time out to reflect on the coming of the Son of God who provides us with a clear direction in how to build the kingdom of God. It is a time to rejoice in the promise of salvation and how Jesus walks with us as individuals and as a community. An Advent Prayer

Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God's own work for justice. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father's joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing and love. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen.

Christmas Hampers Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' Matthew 25 Thank you to the students, teachers and families for your generous contributions to our Christmas hampers that will be delivered this weekend through St Agnes’ Parish. Our Year 11 students will be involved in the delivery of hampers once again this year. Thank you everyone for your support.

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS

REGIONAL MUSICIANS STRIKE A CHORD The 50 St Joseph’s Regional College students who showcased to friends and family all the wonderful musical learning achieved through the extra-curricular music program for 2014, revealed a wide array of talent and skill in a wide range of styles, including some original student compositions. From concert bands, jazz groups, flute, clarinet, string, brass and mallet ensembles to soloists of voice, piano, saxophones, and duo on clarinet, the evening featured students who had been playing for less than a year up to those who began in primary school and are now in their final year of high school Congratulations to Mrs Sharon Green for her outstanding work in fostering such talent and love of music in these young people and to all of our College tutors: Mrs Kaylene Noble (piano), Mr Mark Spence (drums & percussion), Ms Denise Begnell (voice), Mr Jacob Corbet (bass guitar), Mr Chris Trotman (woodwind) Ms Annette Bridson (strings), Mr Bernie Schwartz (guitar), Mr Zachary Horne (guitar ensemble) Special mention and thanks must go to Mr Alex Small, a brilliant musician who this year has had the role of the College Music Assistant. As well as audio manager for the evening, Alex appeared in the concert accompanying on cello, piano, trombone, saxophone, and assisted in concert preparations backstage. Best wishes to Alex as he, along with Jacob and Zachary, move to Melbourne to study in 2015 - They will be greatly missed! Thankyou to support of family and friends who enjoyed the evening and to principal Mr Jim Dempsey for his encouraging and supportive words at the end of the evening.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS

ATTENTION CURRENT YEAR 9 - YEAR 10 TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS FOR 2015 All Year 10 students in 2015 will be required to bring their own device (iPad or laptop) next year. Please Note: THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL. To assist students and parents to consider the options, a website has been setup specifically to deal with this. The link is http://go2school.wix.com/byod This can also be accessed via the Quicklinks section of the College website. Options, policies, tips for home, how to order a school laptop and more can also be accessed from this site. There is also a contact form if you have any further queries. This week's tip The late Steve Jobs (former CEO of Apple) was a low tech parent. This is an interesting read. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/09/11/fashion/steve-jobs-apple-was-a-low-tech-parent.html?_r=1&referrer= Barry Watson Leader of Learning Technologies

HOMEWORK HUB

The Library is a great place for students to complete class work and assessment tasks. All Library resources are available for use during this time. On Tuesdays, Mr Toohey, our Leader of Mathematics, is available to assist you with mathematical problems.

The hours are: Monday and Wednesday 3.15pm - 4.30pm Tuesday and Thursday 3.15pm - 5.00pm Friday 3.15pm - 4.00pm

The Homework Hub is for people who are "getting things done". Just a reminder that the homework hub is only for homework or study. The homework hub is not a place for students to socialise, wait for buses or play with iPads. Students not involved in productive school work will be asked to leave the homework hub.

LIBRARY Holiday Reading Even though today marks the end of borrowing from the College library for Years 7-10, there are alternatives freely available. First, we have our own Overdrive e–book Library, which can be found at http://sjrcexchange.lib.overdrive.com. Students can borrow using their Library card number, and also their password which they use to log into the College network each day. We have been adding to our e-book collection consistently all year and we encourage the use of it not just during holiday time but term-time as well. Second, those who are members of the local Port Macquarie Library service can borrow during this time. There is also an additional Overdrive e–book service available from its catalogue, and any member of the community with a Library card can use this to borrow straight to their device. In addition, the Port Macquarie Library is offering a Summer Reading Club program for those keen to read over the break and possibly win a prize. To register, students are encouraged to visit www.summerreadingclub.org.au and to find out more information, go to www.mnclibrary.org.au. Regular Port Macquarie Library patrons are encouraged to attend the Library Christmas Party on Friday 19th December starting at 4.00pm at the Grant Street site. There will be songs, dance, stories and Christmas Craft – all free and lots of fun. Years 7-10 Students in Years 7-10 are encouraged to start collecting their text and Library books together in readiness for a quick return after the exams in Weeks 9 and 10. There will be several opportunities for students to return books, such as Library staff visiting PC rooms with a trolley, and Library staff with a trolley being available in the Lockers area at certain times. However, ultimately it is the responsibility of every student to return their books in good condition. We are looking forward to a seamless end-of-year textbook return period. Please note the following key dates:

5th December – Year 10 books due back by 3.15pm.

9th December – Years 7-9 books due back by 3.15pm. Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office. One requirement of every student is that they return all textbooks and Library books to the Library, and it is the student’s responsibility to check classroom cupboards, not the teachers, or Library staff. Many thanks to all those who complete this requirement promptly. Like us on FaceBook – St Joseph’s Regional College Library. Follow us on Twitter – @sjrcexchange Karen Bale Teacher Librarian

He shot a total of 69 nett which put him in the club house lead for quite a while. In the end he finished 4th in the nett competition.
