Dear St. Matthew’s Parishioners, Friends and Alumni,
As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday we should begin to reflect on those things for which we are most thankful. On my list I have always included my thanks for God, my family, a place to live, food on my table, my health, a good job, other family members and wonderful friends.
Many of us are tempted these days to circle the wagons and only care for our own, whether in terms of school, property, or civic responsibility. While we always have an obligation to hearth and home, our gifts and talents are meant to be shared with the wider community. Thanksgiving reminds us that we are in this together; that our personal fulfillment is connected with the well-being of others, including people we may have never met. An example of this is our Giving Tree Program. Please consider participating in this wonderful tradition here at St. Matthew parish. You will have the opportunity to pick a name from the Christmas tree at the end of November, and purchase the gift requested. Pausing a moment to reach out, just at the right time, can transform a person’s life.
One of my favorite thanksgiving stories centers on an elderly woman, now deceased, who shared her daily habit with her pastor, who later related it to me. Each morning, as she took her walk, she gave thanks for the many blessings in her life. Though she walked slowly through her neighborhood, burdened by the aging process and the grief accompanying her years as a widow, (Continued on page 2)

Dear St. Matthew Parishioners, Friends and Alumni, (cont’d) she confessed that she never ran out of things for which to be thankful. Her simple practice of thanksgiving shaped how she lived her life, faced aging, and related to others.
Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don't know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you're tired and weary, because it means you've made a difference.
It's easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who
are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
And they can become your blessings.

Blessings and Happy Thanksgiving when it comes around
Ann Connelly Admissions Director St. Matthew Catholic School

Jubilee Year of Mercy Jubilee Year of Mercy
November 20, 2016 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Jubilee Year Ends Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus’ “royal portrait” is the cross. From this “throne,” the crucified “crown prince” welcomes by “executive pardon” the kingdom of mercy’s first citizen, a fellow criminal. The “Good Thief” requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: “Remember me when . . .” (Luke 23:42). “Today you will be with me,” King Jesus promises, “in
paradise.” (23:43). Paradise, even for non-believers, is an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow creatures, and Creator. Today, we “good thieves” beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to remember that, although Jesus’ kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus’ returns, that kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus’ mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, November 24, 2016 Mass at 9:00 a.m.
As you make plans for this year’s family celebration of Thanksgiving, we invite parishioners who will be staying in the area to join us for a special Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00am on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, 2016. (NOTE: There will be NO 6:30am Mass, 12:05pm Mass, 5:00pm Confessions or Exposition and Benediction that day.) As our nation enjoys this one day a year to thank God “from Whom all blessings flow,” we Catholics have the opportunity to better appreciate just what a blessing we have in the weekly and daily opportunities we enjoy for “Eucharist,” which means “thanksgiving” in the original Greek. What better way to start our national feast as Catholics, faith-filled and faithful citizens of the United States of America?! Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor
