Psalm 33 RESPONSORIAL

1. Lord, whose love in humble service Bore the weight of human need, Who upon the cross, forsaken, Worked you mercy's perfect deed: We, your servants, bring the worship Not of voice alone, but heart; Consecrating to your purpose Ev'ry gift which you impart.

2. Still your children wander homeless; Still the hungry cry for bread; Still the captives long for freedom; Still in grief we mourn our dead. As you, Lord, in deep compassion Healed the sick and freed the soul, By your Spirit send your power To our world to make it whole.

3. As we worship, grant us vision, Till your love's revealing light, In its height and depth and greatness, Dawns upon our quickened sight, Making known the needs and burdens Your compassion bids us bear, Stirring us to tireless striving, Your abundant life to share.

4. Called from worship into service, Forth in your great name we go To the child, the youth, the aged, Love in living deeds to show, Hope and health, good will and comfort, Counsel, aid, and peace we give, That your children, Lord, in freedom May your mercy know and live.

1. Keep me safe O God, I take refuge in you. I say to the Lord, “You are my God. My happiness lies in you alone; my happiness lies in you alone.”

2. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel, who even at night directs my heart. I keep the Lord ever in my sight: since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm.

3. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even in safety shall my body rest. For you will not leave my soul among the dead, nor let your beloved know decay.

4. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, at your right hand

TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: “Too much information!” We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don’t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it’s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John’s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been “too much information” for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem “too much” for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God.

TODAY’S READINGSFirst Reading — My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11).Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33).Second Reading — Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16).Gospel — Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all (Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]).

ST.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the

phrase “the Catholic vote” is heard. It’s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by 1830. It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to “every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism.”

Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country.

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH

LIFE AS PARTICIPATIONAfter conversion, you don’t look out at reality; you look

out from reality. In other words, God is not “out there”: you are in God and God is in you. You are in the middle of Reality! You’re a part of it. It’s a mystery of participation. After his conversion experience, Paul is obsessed with the idea that “I’m participating in something that’s bigger than me.” In fact, he uses the phrase “in Christ” 164 times to describe this organic unity and participation in Christ. “I live no longer, not I; but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). “In Christ” is his code phrase for this new participatory life.

This is a completely different experience of life. I don’t have to fully write my private story. It’s being written with me and in me. I am already a character on the stage. I am being used, I am being chosen, I am being led. After conversion, you will know that your life is not about you; you are about life. You are about God. You’re an instance of both the agony and the ecstasy of God that is happening inside of you, and all you can do is say yes to it. After transformation, it’s not about doing it right; it’s about being in right relationship. It’s not about being correct; it’s about being connected.

After conversion, you don’t experience self-consciousness so much as what the mystics call pure consciousness. Self-consciousness implies a dualistic split, with me over here thinking about that over there. The mind remains dualistic until you have a mystical experience. Then the subject/object split is overcome. You can’t maintain it forever, but you’ll know it once in a while, and you’ll never be satisfied with anything less. In unitive experience, you’re freed from the burden of self-consciousness; you are living in, through, and with another. That’s the same as the experience of truly being in love. Falling and being in love, like unitive experience, cannot be sustained at the ecstatic level, but it can be touched upon and then integrated within the rest of your life.

True union does not absorb distinctions, but actually intensifies them. The more one gives one’s self in creative union with another, the more one becomes one’s self. This is mirrored in the Trinity: perfect giving and perfect receiving between three who are all still completely themselves. The more one becomes one’s True Self, the more capable one is of not overprotecting the boundaries of one’s false self. You have nothing to protect after transformation, and that’s the great freedom and the great happiness we see in converted people. There’s no “little richard” here that I need to protect because it’s precisely that little richard that got in the way and has now passed away—with no noticeable losses. Or as Paul puts it, “Because of Christ, I now consider my former advantages as disadvantages . . . all of it is mere rubbish if only I can have a place in him” (Philippians 3:7-8).

Dear Newlyweds,

The Diocese of Dallas has established a wonderful tradition of honoring couples who have been married twenty-five and fifty years with the celebration of the Silver and Gold Masses. These long-lasting unions are a living witness to the commitment of Christian marriage and life.

I would like now to add to the tradition with a Mass honoring couples who are newly married. I will celebrate a Mass for Newlyweds on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 5:00p.m. at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe for all couples married in the Church since November 1, 2017.

A reception will immediately follow the Mass in the Grand Salon. Along withfellowship, the diocesan ministry offices will provide resources to help support your marriage and keep your love rooted in faith.

I sincerely hope that you will be able to join us. In order that we may adequately plan for this event, please RSVP at www.cathdal.org/newlyweds by October 26. If you have any questions, please contact Erika Martinez at [email protected] or 214-379-2878.

Be assured of my prayers as you live out your vocation of marriage. I look forward to being with the two of you at the Mass for Newlyweds and reception on November 3.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Edward J. Burns Bishop of Dallas
