• In this session we will cover:– Internal and external pressures on library and
information management services– How high quality research is crucial to
addressing the challenges– Examples of research which makes a
difference.

The pressures on libraries and information services, and winds of change
• Technology has changed the way information is produced, stored and accessed dramatically
• There is no let up in that trend
• Computer technology• Internet • Mobile technologies• Augmented Reality, QR codes, the Internet of
Things are transforming the information delivery landscape
• Changing user attitudes, behaviour and needs
• Concepts such as Knowledge Management, the Knowledge Economy
• Information Literacy and Transliteracy (the ability to use the wide range of communication platforms we now have at our disposal)
Legislation and regulatory requirements
• Privacy and Data Protection Act legislation is driven by market forces and globalisation as much or more than by ideology
• New complexities brought about by technologies – not least Social Media
• Intellectual property is now a key resource – organisations need to comply with the law and know what assets they have in order to be able to exploit them
• Freedom of Information and the Right to Know• Information Management has a key, and
growing, role to play in the above• Regulators increasingly require Records
Manager and Archivist expertise as part of regulatory compliance
• Need to listen to customer needs and respond effectively and creatively
• The role of the trusted intermediary with key Information Management expertise is still very much needed, perhaps more than ever
• Awareness of that need among movers, shakers, budget holders and customers is relatively low
