  • Building El Raval | BarcelonaDiploma project, Jonathan Sergison Atelier

This diploma project is based on the logic of a solution that includes a courtyard, but through the manipu-lation of two blocks, the interior space is open to the outside. The project is carefully and gently calibrated and pays attention to the management of the plans and to the way in which the building meets the city at the ground level. In addition, this project uses a strong language of materials, evoking a sense of per-manence and solidity, and through the introduction of these qualities, aims the ambition to make a posi-tive contribution to the site. In this sense the feeling of home is connected to the sense of permanence evoked by the character of the building. Aurelio Galfetti

The project begins with the analysis and a research on what does it mean to live and build in the Raval, thinking about the meaning of public and private spaces (on what kind of public spaces does it offer to inhabitants and what kind of living conditions there are in the existing apartments).

The position of the site has a key role in the development of the project: in one side is facing the huge, empty and lightful piazza of Rambla del Raval and on the other side is in the heart of the Raval charac-terized by narrow, small and dark streets disposed in a geometrical way with high density of people and buildings.

The project is composed by two buildings with 2 courtyards and 2 public open spaces facing the streets, but walking around the site the perception is only about one single building. The tension between this two entities makes the existence of one impossible without the other. Together they create public and semipublic spaces, connections and passages. The volume is shaped, cut in order to adapt itself to the context in order to interreact at best to the light condition. Light in the dark context of the Raval declares the presence of openings and the dilatation of the urban fabric and, walking around, every light, every tree appears as a surprise, as a promise of new urban situation.

On the ground floor the spaces are flexible: always facing the streets and the rear situation of an internal courtyard could be used for different purposes: communal spaces, commercials, restaurants and could change in time.

The entrance of the building for the inhabitants is only through the courtyards.

  • Coming from The Rambla del Raval, there are different moments before arriving in the apartment: the light of the piazza is fast replaced by the dark condition of the narrow street. Then another public space appears, smaller this time, through which another situation of proximity arrives before entering the dark tube of the staircases from the internal courtyard. Entering the apartment the light slowly re-appears delimiting rooms and passages. The inside spaces are organized with a calibrated balance between light and shadow, the central services and distribution allows to keep the spaces of the apartments extro-verted to the city and courtyard. Almost the totality of the apartments has three faces to the city and the corner rooms are favorable living situations. There is a big amount of different dimensions of apartments in the building and one staircase serves at least 3 or 4 apartment.

The faade has a strong contextual presence in Barcelona, but shedding a new contemporary aesthetic on the surroundings; the sandstone and concrete precast modules create a tectonic composition.

  • Renovation and reuse of a Mill | Giubiasco, TicinoProject made with Robin Bader in Martin Boesch Atelier

This is a project of restortation of an old factory, a mill.A carful and accurate survey study of the complex was necessary before the design could be initiated. The site has an important position in Ticino, Giubiasco. Close to the station, the mill saw a lot of passages of trains between Switzerland and Italy, and the big silo was an important point of reference in the land-scape.

The project is divided in two part : the housing part, in the lower building and the silo.On the ground floor the spaces are dedicated to commercial and public: the structure of the building re-mains the same as the original one. The building has different situations: the part facing the station is a trafficked street that connects the station with the industrial area of Giubiasco (soon to be changed into a housing area) and a big park on the other side that allows future expansion of housing.

The apartments are basically duplex and the distribution is with outside balcony one floor on two. Public spaces are present and a roof garden for the community. The faade is the original one (with of course new glasses and frames).

The chosen program for the big silo is different: a public theatre at the lower level and sound rooms for musicians. The silo is an important point of reference day and night, a blank faade remains but covered with polycarbonate, and opened only in few cases in the monumental tube of the staircases. The stairs and lounge close to the distribution are the only place in which musician can meet because the blind, dark and ironized cells ( that respect the original structure of the silo) are places of creation and concentration. On the roof there is a public bar.

  • Low Rise - High density | ZurichHousing made with Lorenzo Donati in Jonathan Sergison Atelier

The project is part of a research of the studio Sergison that considers strategies for growth of the european cities through low rise densification. The studio was interested in how different cities can absorb a growing population, meet contemporary housing requirements, improve working conditions and contain growth within existing boundaries rather than spread ever outwards. The project considers the manner in which existing urban fabric can be extended and consolidated, it recognizes the need to be inventive and architecturally ambitious but above all to be human and appropri-ate.

The building is situated close to Zurich Wiedikon, in the crossroads betweeen Weststrasse and Zweier-strasse. The volume is an important presence inserted in the urban fabric adjacent of an existing building, respecting the hight of the surroundings. At the streets level the building offers public spaces for the Sinagoga behind, restaurants, ateliers/offices, commercials. Underground parking has also been considered.

Except for the ground floor the whole complex is used for a residential purpose . With the use of duplex and apartments with an L-scheme the project tries to give more possible overture to each apartment and we tries to use the maintain the L shape as a quality. One staircase serves all the dwellings and slightly changes at the 4th floor adapting to the plan. At the 4th floor ( where its also present a big terrace for the inhabitants) the building changes to become a tower typology.Going up the shape of the building and relationship with the adjacent building changes: for this reason the organization in plan is really simple and rational: block of services and distribution divides spaces and rooms. At the lower levels, a duplex typology allows better situations. The dimensions of the apartment goes from one to five rooms.

The openings on the facades, are designed according to what is behind: starting from a basic module 4mx2.1m the windows are then developed in 3 different typologies with fix or sliding panels according to the apartments.

The facade is designed and constructed of pre-cast concrete panels.

  • Meditation Space | LisbonManuel & Francisco Aires Mateus Atelier

We do not have to be long in the woods to experience the always rather anxious impression of going

deeper and deeper into a limitless world. Here is Menards own intimate forests: with the mystery of their space prolonged indefinitely beyond the veil of tree trunks and leaves, space that is veiled for our

eyes, but transparent to action, are veritable psychological transcendents. Now I am traversed by bridle paths, under the seal of sun and shade...I live in great density. I slump

down into the thick foliage...In the forest, I am my entire self. Everything is possible in my heart . Thickly wooded distance separates me from moral codes and cities.

Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

Walking around the island in the Mouchao do Lombo do Tejo this building appears in the landscape of fields as a basic structure of pillars and a thin horizontal line of the roof situated in the acropolis of this island, inhabited only by birds and small animals. The rational square of the plan imposes his presence in the territory manifesting the relation between artificial and natural.Inside the whole space (floor, vertical structure, roof structure) is composed by the same wood elements of 20 x 20 cm. The experience of meditation is conceived as a limitless pathway between pillars, until the central room appears as an empty space lost in this artificial forest.

  • Equiper la metropole | ParisUrban studies and project in Frderic Bertrand Atelier at ENSA-PB

The Canal de lOurcq was built at a width of 3.2 m but was enlarged to 3.7 m, which permitted use by more pleasure boats. The canal begins at Port-aux-Perches near the village of Troesnes, where it splits from the channeled River Ourcq, and flows to the Bassin de la Villette, where it joins the Canal Saint-Martin. The canal is considered part of the 130 km Parisian canal network, along with the Canal Saint-Denis, the bassin de la Villette, and the Canal Saint-Martin. The canals were created as part of the administrative management of water in Paris during the nineteenth century.Since 1983, the waterway has been designated for use by pleasure craft and the position of the canal in the zone of urbanization of Paris started to pose questions about the re-organization of the river area and about the qualities could give to inhabitants or future inhabitants.

The studies done at ENSAPB were concentrated in the first part of the semester in a urban analysis and research about the existing situation along the canal, in the territory on Pantin, Bobigny, Aulnay, Bondy, Sevran. With the tools of maps, drawings and graphics, the diagnostic of the huge site was necessary as a starting point for a further reflection on how could be developed the landscape and what could offer to the city the rehabilitation of the industrial and abandoned territories along the canal.

The interest was concentrated on creating points of public attraction for the life of the city and how could be possible to promote urban intensification in these areas. Nowadays more than 50% of the territory bordering the canal host projects of rehabilitation.

The project proposed is a cultural public space in the industrial harbour of Pantin. The entire site is considered as a total equipment. Open air there are spaces dedicated for sports and free time activities (cinema, bicycles, walking, restaurants). The two banks of the canal interact each other through a visual and material relation between building and interventions.

The main building is conceived as a temporary, dynamic space that could easily expand due to the needs. The metal light structure and the transparent u-glass precast panels are composed together in modules and organizes flexible spaces. The steel structure incorporates the surrounding industrial language.

A theater and a swimming pool cohabits together and upstairs there are spaces ( inside and outside) rent-able by the public. In summer and winter and day and night the activity can change and the transparent envelope of the faade creates in the night light boxes.

The contact with the channel is searched, and it is important the idea of comparing hard soil and liquid soil. Outdoor spaces are floating, suspended at the banks and attached to the building.

  • Workshop Meds | IstanbulMeeting of Design Students, summer 11

MEDS Meeting of design students - was founded in 2010 by students from different countries and differ-ent departments of design. It was created with aim to join all design departments together. Architecture, interior architecture, industrial design, graphic design and all other departments of design.Design makes ideas tangible, it takes abstract thoughts and inspirations and makes something concrete. The idea of MEDS is to share knowledge about design, to learn the design process, from small objects to large projects, to share experience, to improve creativity, abilities and communication between students. Different people, different cultures, different languages and different design departments are joined in one place, to new and fresh ideas.

Second MEDS workshop was held at the beginning of August in Istanbul. For 12 intense days, 150 stu-dents from an array of design backgrounds worked, talked and camped together for an event that concen-trates on the sharing of design ideas across disciplines, traditions and cultures from all over the Europe.

This year the theme of the workshops was the juxtaposition of the continents of Europe and Asia within Istanbul city centre. The contrast of culture, history, geography, were the point of interest of this project: discussions and research were made in order to design a structure of 3 x 3 x 3 as real space experience of as idea connected to the city of Istanbul.

  • Workshop Bellastock| ParisDesign and realisation of a temporary city La ville en souffle, may 11

The Paris research project Bellastock , analyzing over time through new experiences and around differ-ent materials of constructions, concentrates his interests around learning by direct experiences. The central projects of the associations is to build ephemeral cities for short time every year with different material (sand, wood, plastic, fabric..).

In 2011, the site of Bruyeres -sur -Oise welcomed the first inflatable ephemeral city designed and built with the ideas of 1300 participants. With this architecture of air and textiles each one of the habitats was a small but fundamental part of this ex novo village built in 3 days. The adventure of La Ville en Souffle was for me an opportunity to explore many contemporary issues as the economy of the construction, the characteristics of the materials, living and working together, ecology, construction site, waste disposal.

This collective project was a tool for research and experimentation by hand, a very interesting experience of learning from myself and from the others on how find solutions and face problems in which architecture was the common shared passion.

  • Workshop with Helene Binet | ComoPhotographic workshop with Hlne Binet, Architecture in photography, AAM, 2012.

In this workshop Hlne Binet divided the students in groups and gave to each one a theme. The subject was San Abbondio church in Como and we had a maximum of 36 photos to shot in black and white.

She encouraged the students to take time to see the whole building before deciding what to shoot and talk over the exposition and the frame. Once the photos were printed, each group of student had to make a selection of 5 pictures and discuss them with her.

What was important for her was to show her method but also to give complete freedom to our sensibility and ideas.
