To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK My dear people, In the week to come, we look forward to Valentine’s Day on Thursday and our Women’s Club’s Valentine Fete on Friday. Also on Thursday, Gloria Purvis, a convert to Catholicism and Catholic apologist who is a native of Charleston, will speak at Bishop England High School in support of the establishment of a Catholic FM radio station at Bishop England. As always, I encourage support for Catholic radio in South Carolina and I encourage you to listen as well. I, for one, tremendously appreciate the break from the constant news coverage of politics. Not unexpectedly, many of you tell me your hopes and needs in the form of prayer requests. And I want you to know they are taken seriously. Typically, I try to say a prayer for an intention as soon as I walk off from a conversation. I find this helps me remember the intention later. Ours is far from a perfect world and there is much to pray for. Recently, it came to me that we are probably missing out on some of the means of grace. Specifically, I was thinking of the Monday night Miraculous Medal Novena. In a private revelation to St. Catherine Laboure, Our Lady revealed the medal and it was originally called the medal of the Immaculate Conception. Not long after the medal was struck, there were many conversions and miracles attributed to this devotion that it began to be called the Miraculous Medal. Some may scoff but we know that Our Lord did not hesitate to use matter from the creation as He redeemed our fallen world. Water became wine, spittle was mixed with earth, fish and bread were multiplied, bread became His Body, wine became His blood. In the image of Our Lady on the medal, there are rays emanating from her fingers, some are long and go all the way to the edge of the image; some are short. Our Lady told St. Catherine Laboure that the short ones represent the graces that are available, but never sought or utilized. As we continue to honor each other’s prayer requests, I encourage those with special and urgent needs to consider making the Miraculous Medal novena by attending for nine weeks. The word novena is based on the Latin for nine and could be nine days, weeks, even hours, in which there is prayer. Thanks for your inquiries about the move into the rectory addition. Like me, it’s slow. I want to get rid of things before moving into the new quarters because, like most people, if I don’t discard them now and move them … well you probably know how that goes. Father McInerny
