Safety first: crimeprevention for womenIT’s a disturbing reality thatwomenaremorevulnerabletocrime, becausemanycriminals view women as soft targets.

After a number of women were targetedin the area, ADT Security is offering anumber of tips to help women stay safe.Twoyoungwomenwere attacked leaving

clubs last week. One was raped and robbedaftershegot intohercaroutsideanightcluband a second was involved in an attemptedrape the next morning.Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Se-

curity Western Cape said the key to safetyis always to err on the side of caution.“Tell someone where you are going and

the time you expect to return.“Save to your mobile phone or memorise

the details of the person to be contacted inthe event of an emergency.“Remember, less is more when it comes

to wearing flashy jewellery and carryingcash. Also, if you are taking a handbag, car-ry it close to your body and not danglingby the straps.”Dale alsowarns against thedangers of be-

coming distracted.“Adistracted person is an easy target. Of-

ten women have several things to take careof at once, and it’s vital that they remain

alert at all times.“Be aware of people around you when

heading towards your vehicle, especially atplaces such as shopping centres and petrolstations. Ensure that you take a moment tocheck the street before pulling into a drive-way, be it your own or a friend’s.”If youaredriving,Dale said the first thing

to do once you are inside your vehicle is toensure that all the doors are locked.“Neverdrivewithahandbagoranyother

valuable items on a seat or in the view ofanyone looking into your vehicle from theoutside.“Try and make your car a mobile-free

zone, so you can concentrate on your sur-roundings, and keeping yourself and yourfamily safe.”Most important is to trust your instincts.“Women have great intuition and should

listen to their instincts. If someoneor some-thing makes you feel uneasy, avoid themand leave the area.”By following these precautions, Dale

says, women can develop highly effectivesafety habits and avoid dangerous situa-tions.“I encouragewomennot only to use these

tips, but to share them with family andfriends.”

Website to address crimeAnewwebsiteaimedatcreatingawarenessregarding crime in our area was recentlylaunched by a resident of Stellenbosch.Accordingto thesite’screator,whowant-

ed toremainanonymous, the idea is foreve-ryone to become involved by the use of so-cial media and to help stop crime.“Social media have an impact in our

lives. Connecting and engaging with oneanother leads to safer communities“Your information is safe and secure on

the site andyoualsohave thepowerof yourphone to stay connected and safe at alltimes, no matter where you are,” she said. She said theweb sitewas created tobring

back the sense of community in Stellen-bosch.“We can earn each other's trust again, if

we create a trusted environment for ourcommunity.Eachandeveryonemust focuson crime and safety.”The website, www.ananovel.com gives

usersaplatformtosharewhat ishappeningaround their neighbourhood.“When we start talking to one another

good things start to happen. Most peopledon’t even know their neighbours.

“Tell us your stories so that we can learnfromit.Shareinformationwithpeoplenearyou while still keeping your privacy,” sheadded. The site also gives others updates on sus-

picious activity.“In school, children are scared to talk

about bullying. The site gives them a safeplace to share information.“The site also gives the police a way to

cooperate with the community by sharingcrime prevention and safety tips, informa-tion, alerts of property crime or suspiciousactivity. We can alert police without beingscared.”The use of the website is free. Invite
