Beste Kollega

Dear Colleague

Research publications are among the most importantproducts that are delivered by SU researchers. It makesa critical contribution to extending SU’s internationalreputation as an excellent research univers ity and makesa s ignificant contribution to SU’s annual subsidy income.More importantly, these publications allow new knowledgegenerated at SU to be transferred to a global audience, thus enhancing the application of research results . Itstands to reason that researchers who publish theirfindings in quality expert sources are therefore regardedas some of the most important assets at any univers ity.

The office of the Vice-Rector (Research and Innovation)carries the responsibility of strengthening and extendingthe knowledge base at SU. I consider it my duty andprivilege to be able to give recognition to an exquis itegroup of SU researchers who made the biggestcontributions to SU’s total number of accreditedpublications in a given year (based on audited publicationstatistics of the previous year).

This recognition is currently only focused on academicsthat hold ordinary positions within an academicdepartment, and does not include researchers that arealready involved in research chairs and centres ofexcellence. The reason being a limited budget, and thefact that the latter already work in environments whereresearch funding are more readily available. Extra-ordinary appointments are also not included. In addition, two categories are taken into account, namely (i) the 25SU researchers making the biggest contributions in termsof the publication units (PUs) of the Department of HigherEducation and Training (DHET) and (ii) the 25 SUresearchers who produced the highest number ofaccredited research publications in collaboration with theirnational and international research partners and students. Both categories only take into account researchpublications that appear in DHET-accredited journals ,conference proceedings or books.

I hereby want to s incerely congratulate the 39researchers at SU who made the biggest contribution tothe number of scientific publications in 2011 (11 of theseresearchers fall in both categories and therefore receiverecognition in both). The Univers ity hereby acknowledgestheir exceptional contribution towards SU’s researcheffort. A research fund of R50 000 is attributed to each ofthese awards. The funding is in support of furtherresearch activities.

The following people receive awards based on their 2011publication outputs (* indicates those who fall in bothcategories):
