Transitorietà: una delle due immagini rivaleggianti non può dominare la percezione cosciente indefinitamente, ad un certo punto verrà rimpiazzata dall’immagine alternativa;
Inevitabilità: quando se ne crea la condizione, non si può non percepire l’alternanza percettiva;
![Page 6: STIMOLAZIONE RETINICA time PERCEZIONE COSCIENTE](https://reader033.vdocuments.pub/reader033/viewer/2022052618/5542eb68497959361e8d43b0/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
La rivalità binoculare, rispetto alle altre forme di bistabilità percettiva è un processo più automatico e guidato dallo stimolo;
Risulta dalla competizione ad un livello più basso dell’elaborazione visiva (probabilmente V1), che è meno soggetto ad influenze attentivo-cognitive (Meng & Tong, 2004);

4 TESTABLE PROPOSITIONS ON DOMINANCE AND RATE ALTERNATION:
I. Increase of the stimulus strength on one eye will increase the predominance of this stimulus.
II. Increase of the stimulus strength in one eye will not affect t for the same eye: tr can only be affected by λl, not by λr.
III. Increase of the stimulus strength in one eye will increase the alternation frequency: increase of λr reduces tl, and leaves tr unaffected, hence T = tr + tl is reduced, and this is equivalent to an increase in rate alternation.
IV. Increase of the stimulus strength of both eyes will increase the alternation frequency: increase of λl and λr leads to a reduction of both tr and tl and hence of T.
Levelt JM, 1965

Scambiare gli stimoli presentati ai due occhi durante rivalità binoculare, provoca generalmente una transizione di dominanza;
La soppressione durante rivalità binoculare non è selettiva, ma comporta una generale diminuzione della sensibilità per una porzione locale dell’occhio;
![Page 17: STIMOLAZIONE RETINICA time PERCEZIONE COSCIENTE](https://reader033.vdocuments.pub/reader033/viewer/2022052618/5542eb68497959361e8d43b0/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

![Page 27: STIMOLAZIONE RETINICA time PERCEZIONE COSCIENTE](https://reader033.vdocuments.pub/reader033/viewer/2022052618/5542eb68497959361e8d43b0/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)

Touch interferes with vision during binocular rivalry both by prolonging dominance and by curtailing suppression of the visual percept parallel to the haptic stimulus.
The effect of touch is strictly selective for the match between visual and haptic Spatial Frequencies.
Both these evidences strongly suggest that the interaction between haptic and visual signals occurs at the very first stages of visual analysis, probably V1.
We suggest that the bistability of visual perception during binocular rivalry is able to reveal the somatosensory connections with early visual cortex, connections normally masked by the strong visual input.
