ROOM 114 – CLASS NEWS
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
This week in math we finished Unit 2
and our work on area and perimeter. We took
the unit test on Thursday. Double checking our
work for details (“Do I have the correct unit of measure with my answer?”) continues to be a
goal area for many students.
We also presented projects and
reflected on our IB Planner, titled The Human
Machine. Students did a great job presenting
their projects to the class. They also reflected on
everything we have learned and chose
something to include in their portfolios. We will
be starting our next Unit of Inquiry, Civil
Struggles, next week. Our spelling list focused on words with
double letters and the /aw/ sound. Students
started Tic Tac Toe spelling, where they choose
how they want to practice their spelling words.
We also worked on writing a friendly letter and
addressing an envelope in the Great Mail Race.
It’s been a week of the arts! Kathy Berlin
(mom of a fifth grader) did a lesson on
pointillism and Kyle (White Bear Lake Center for
the Arts) did a watercolor lesson. Students alsowatched a performance by the Windy City
Players with their first grade buddies.
On Monday, we met visitors (school
administrators) from Brazil. We were able to
ask them questions about what schools and
students in their country are like.
We also had our fall fun celebration on
Friday afternoon. This included crafts, snacks,
and fall games. We had a wonderful time! Have
a great weekend!

THE GREAT MAIL RACELast week our fifth grade team
received a letter from a fifth grade
class in Utah inviting us to
participate in the Great Mail Race.
This is a way for us to write letters tofifth graders in every state, and to
receive letters back from around the
country! We are excited about this
project. Each student wrote a letter
this week and will be sending it to
two different states across the U.S.
We look forward to hearing back
from other fifth graders and tracking
our letters on a map of the U.S.!
TRICK OR CANThe canned food drive has been
extended until November 5.If you can donate, we would
appreciate non-perishable fooditems. Thank you!
