DESCRIPTION

The Next Generation Data Center is HERE. These data centers are highly virtualized environments with extremely high virtual machine densities. They thrive on flexibility and cost efficiency. While most of these data centers are in the hands of cloud service providers (CSPs), more traditional enterprises see the benefits of the next generation data center and are adopting much of the CSP mentality. Because of their levels of VM density, these data centers change the storage I/O dynamic and essentially make the traditional storage array obsolete. In this SlideShare "The Storage Requirements for the Next Generation Data Center" experts from Storage Switzerland and SolidFire to discuss: 1. What is the Next Generation Data Center? 2. Why are Next Generation Data Centers ‘The End Game’ of IT? 3. How Do Next Generation Data Centers Break Storage? 4. How Does Storage Need to Change to Keep Up? All SlideShare viewers that register for the on-demand version of the webinar will get complete audio and Q&A. They will also receive an exclusive, advanced copy of Storage Switzerland's latest white paper "How to Design Storage for the Next Generation Data Center" emailed right after they sign up.

Our Speakers

George Crump is the founder of Storage Switzerland, the leading storage analyst focused on the subjects of big data, solid state storage, virtualization, cloud computing and data protection. He is widely recognized for his articles, white papers, and videos on such current approaches as all-flash arrays, deduplication, SSDs, software-defined storage, backup appliances, and storage networking. He has 25 years of experience designing storage solutions for data centers across the US.

Jay Prassl is responsible for SolidFire's brand and marketing efforts. Prior to SolidFire, Prassl was employee number five at LeftHand Networks, where he spent the last 10 years breaking new ground in the storage market with the company's distributed SAN solution. He led multiple parts of the LeftHand business through its acquisition by HP, and was most recently responsible for the management of the full HP/LeftHand product line in Canada, U.S., and Latin America. Prassl earned a bachelor of science degree from Michigan State University.

Introducing The Next Generation Data Center

Page 8: Storage Requirements For the Next Generation Data Center

Next Generation Data Center

What○ Next Generation Data Centers are

highly virtualized environments with very dense VM-to-Host ratios

○ They're common in cloud provider environments ■ But quickly working their way into

the traditional enterprise

○ This level of dense virtualization creates unique challenges for the storage infrastructure

Page 9: Storage Requirements For the Next Generation Data Center

Next Generation Data Center

Why

○ Allows IT to be delivered as a Service

○ Increases Responsiveness and Flexibility■ But quickly working their way into

the traditional enterprise.

○ Drives Down CapEX and OpEX associated with delivering IT

Next Generation Data Center

Not Just For Cloud Providers

Traditional IT Needs to Focus on Cost- Effective Delivery of Services

Polling Question

We know that no one buys storage in isolation. What management framework are you using in your environment today?

Page 12: Storage Requirements For the Next Generation Data Center

Polling Question

When planning for the future and reviewing your current storage system today, what attribute is most important to your organization needs?

Page 13: Storage Requirements For the Next Generation Data Center

The Storage Roadblock to NGDC

Page 14: Storage Requirements For the Next Generation Data Center

The Storage Roadblock to NGDC

● Massively Random I/O○ Very Dense VM Architectures create ‘Uber’

Storage I/O Blender

● Difficult To Assure QoS○ NGDCs are Very Susceptible to the Noisy Neighbor

■ Storage Infrastructure provide Minimal tools to address

■ Predictable Performance is MOST Important

● Demand for Scale Comes in Spurts○ Storage Has to Be Scaled During Production

Page 15: Storage Requirements For the Next Generation Data Center

Work-arounds to the Roadblocks

● Add Flash To Legacy Arrays○ Still Very Unpredictable○ Not Tuned for Flash

● All-Flash Arrays○ High Performance - Limited Control○ Scaling Requires Additional System

● Leads To Over-provisioning○ Extra Capacity and Performance

Purchased - Violates Basic NGDC Tenet of Efficiency

Page 16: Storage Requirements For the Next Generation Data Center

The Solution to the Roadblocks

● Scale Out All-Flash Arrays○ Seamless, Infinite Scale○ No HDD unpredictability

● QoS - Not Rate Limiting○ Need To Control Both Ends of

Performance Equation■ Not Too Much, Not Too Little --

Consistent

● Operational Efficiency○ Fully Scriptable via RESTful API

Summary

● The Next-Generation Data Center Should be the Goal of All Data Centers

● Storage is a Key RoadBlock to that Goal

● Simply “Throwing” Flash at the Problem is Not Enough

● Requires a Scalable, Intelligent

Storage System
