TEXT 1

Read the text and do the exercises below.

7

Family is probably the oldest human social institution. It has existed, as anthropologists can ascertain, among all peoples in all ages. The reasons for the universality of the family are not hard to find. The human sex urge is a powerful one, and unless this urge were channeled into socially acceptable forms, chaos would result. In a very meaningful sense, therefore, the family is a man´s solution to the sex problem. Studies bysociologists and psychologists also indicate that human beings need closeassociations with other human beings. The need to communicate, to shareexperiences and laughter, to elicit sympathy and comfort, to love and beloved are apparently lasting needs for the average person. And these “primary group needs”, as they are called by sociologists, can best be gratified within the family situation.

(International Encyclopedia)

3. Change into the ACTIVE voice the underlined sentenced in the text:

TEXT 2

Solutions to the gift-giving dilemma

8

Here are some clever ways women convey to their partners the gifts they would really love to get.- “I call my sister and tell her exactly what I want”, says Sheila, “Then, when Dave asks, I say ‘Oh, I

don´t know! Why don´t you call my sister? She always knows what I like.’ Then my sister has all the info – including where to buy it!”

- “If we´re walking by a store window and I see something I like, I just say, ‘ Oooooooooh, look at that!’ says Angela. “he´s usually bright enough to pick up on it.”

- “I put a small card in his wallet that has all my sizes on it: from my dress and shoes sizes to my ring size”, says Marcie. “It gives him all the specifics but leaves plenty of room for him to surprise me. “
