rhetoric or reality? • Do you really think so,
• It is too early to think about HKDSE in S.3 because we have 3 more years to go.
• 3X may be better / safer than 2X because even if we cannot get 3 subjects passed, we still have 2 in hand.
• Academic subjects are usually very demanding, perhaps cultural subjects, e.g. Visual Arts, Music or Technology and Living, may be less demanding in terms of the subject contents or time allocated to study.
• Academic subjects are comparably more important than cultural subjects, as far as the admission to university is concerned.
• Tutorial schools can help students get good marks in public examination.
-
Subject selection is not an end,
but a means to an end
• The most important point is to get the ‘admission
ticket’, irrespective any of the universities or
faculties?
• The most important point is to maximize my
choices for the admission to the university, either
local, overseas; or UGC-funded, private?
• The most important point is to get ‘my cup of tea’
as far as the admission to the faculties or
universities is concerned?
-
Survey: No. of elective subjects
No. of elective
subjects to be
studied
%
chosen
Summary of the reasons
2 elective subjects
(2X)
57.5% Because less is more
If the students can concentrate on 2 elective subjects,
may be they can get higher marks in these 2 subjects.
They may have enough time to deal with some other
life-wide learning activities.
3 elective subjects
(3X)
42.5% 3X may be better / safer than 2X because even if we
cannot get 3 subjects passed, we still have 2 in hand.
Students may have more choices as far as the
admission to university is concerned.
It is easier to get a seat in a university.
The students want to learn more knowledge.
The students have the ability to handle 3 elective
subjects.
-
Survey: Medium of Instruction (MOI) for
Liberal Studies
MOI % chosen Summary of the reasons
English 26.6% • The students believe that they are good at English but are
relatively weak in Chinese.
• The students want to improve English by learning LS by
choosing the MOI of English.
• Using English to learn LS will be helpful for studying other
subjects in university.
•Having learnt IH with the MOI of English in the junior
secondary, students are confident to adopt the same MOI to
learn LS in the senior secondary.
Chinese 73.4% • Students believe that they may get higher marks if they can
take the LS paper (Chinese).
•The students will be easier to handle / learn LS in the MOI
of Chinese.
• The students are good at Chinese (or easier to
present/express in Chinese) // weak in English.
-
Survey: Mathematics Mathematics % chosen Summary of the reasons
Core part only 73.1% Students do not have the ability / lack of confidence in learning the extended module of Mathematics.
The extended module will not be counted as a single
subject nor is it an admission requirement for a
number of faculties.
The students do not have time to handle so many
subjects // The students want to have a balanced
loading in S.4-6.
Extended modules 26.9%
The students are interested in the Mathematics’
extended module.
The students think that learning Mathematics’
extended module will be helpful to gain the admission
to some faculties, e.g. engineering, science etc.
The students are good at Mathematics.
Some universities will treat the extended module in
Math as a single subject as the admission requirement
to some facutlies , e.g. HKUST and PolyU.

3X: Three elective subjects can be chosen from three different blocks respectively.
If the above class structure is launched, the satisfaction rate can be as high as 92.5% in the
first two elective subjects based on the choices indicated in the survey.

School-based assessment (SBA)
What is SBA?
• SBA is an assessment administered in schools as part of
the learning and teaching process, with
• students being assessed by their subject teachers.
• Marks awarded will count towards students’ results in
the HKDSE Examination.

-
How will students benefit from the SBA?
SBA
• integrates learning and teaching with assessment;
• offers a more comprehensive appraisal of students’ performance;
• helps students understand their strengths and weaknesses
through quality feedback from teachers, leading to continuous
improvement;
• boosts students’ confidence and motivation to learn;
• enhances autonomous learning; and
• enables students to achieve their best in a more relaxed and
familiar setting.

Other Learning Experiences (OLE)
What is OLE?
The Other Learning Experiences (“OLE”) is one of the three components of the
New Senior Secondary Curriculum that complements core and elective subjects for
whole-person development of students. These experiences include: Moral and
Civic Education, Community Service, Career-related Experiences, Aesthetic
Development and Physical Development.
-
The OLE incorporates two parts in our school; taught
course and self-directed study.
1) Taught course
• Physical Education, Music, Visual Arts and Home
Economics department offers a range of courses;
School also organize activities related to Community
service.
2) Self directed study
• To emphasize active individual engagement of student-
focused OLE programmes, students are encouraged to
participate in outside-school OLE-related courses
which should be endorsed by the school
How does our school support students in OLE?

students on March 14, 2013.
• Once the Form is submitted to the school (submission deadline is
June 10, 2013), no further change is allowed to make.
• Places allocation are determined by
– student’s academic results in the 1st mid term, 1st term, 2nd mid term,
final term in S.3 and overall rank in S.3
– special requirements for particular subjects and subject combinations
– student’s performance in the admission interview and test
– the number of available seats in different classes and subjects (e.g. in
some cases such as no enough students studying a subject/subject
combination, the subject/subject combination will not be
opened/offered.)
