16We strive to assist with making "End-of-life" plans, something which is very important in this day and age. “End-of-l ife” does not simply mean taking actions in preparation for one’s f ina l days, but a lso to have an understanding that the end is near, and to prepare oneself by living fully in the present. Therefore, it is essential to convey to those important to you just who “you” are, and to leave behind a legacy for them that is more than just worldly properties.

A temple constructed in 1653 by Osho Harumi, a servant to the second generation shogun Hidetada Tokugawa and his wife. Within the premise there is a f irmly-planted 1m high stone statue of Dainichi Nyorai, or Vairocana. With the construction of Housei-in of the Shinnyo Temple on Byodo Mountain in Yushima-tenj inka, Osho Harumi took on the secular name of “Kume Suke-emon” and served the shogun and his wife as their chief male servant. After the funeral of Hidetada and his wife, it is said that Osho used the offerings received to build the Dainichi-do Temple in Sugamo, in order to give the Dainichi Nyorai statue a secure place.

In 1706 , a monk f rom Fukagawa by the name of J izo Hoshogen spent 15 years carving the “Edorokujizo” (Six Jizo Statues of Edo). One of them is located within Shinshoji Temple, a temple at the beginning of the old Nakasendo Trail. It is said that travelers of the Trail always prayed here for their safety along the way.On June 24 th each year, a memoria l serv ice cal led the “Hyakumanben Dainenju Kuyo” (Mi l l ion Prayer Rosary Beads Memorial Service) is held. Here, everyone prays for safety from calamities, and take turns passing around the 16-meter long Buddhist rosary along the premises.

Shinshoji Temple 8A temple said to have been constructed in 1615 by Emperor Go-Mizunoo. It was originally located in Fukagawa Honmura Town, but in 1912 it was relocated to its current location. Within its cemetery are buried the remains of many famous persons, such as Kokan Shiba, a Western-style painter and scholar f rom the late Edo era (around 1868 ) , and acquaintances of the Kira samurai family, such as Heihachiro Kobayashi, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and Junichiro Tanizaki (only some of the bones are here, the main grave is in Hozen-in Temple in Kyoto). Shoho-in Temple is an auxiliary temple of Shitaya Shrine, where Fujiwara no Hidesato prayed for victory before leading his army against Taira no Masakado in 940. At first the temple was located on Ueno Mountain, but it was relocated to Sannoshita, then Kurumazaka in Shitaya, and finally to its current location in 1906.

Shoho-in 9A temple re located here from Asakusa in 1910 . I t was the 2 nd place in the “Edo Sanjusankasho” (Edo’s 33 Temples of Kannon) and worshipped “Kuzuryu Kannon”, but there seems to be no remains of it now. Within the premise there are 6 folding screens brought back by Yukinaga Konishi during Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s conquest of Choson (Modern North & South Korea), which depicted the lives of people in Choson at the time.

In the Edo era, Koshinzuka in Sugamo flourished as a rest stop along the Nakasendo Trail, and it was even featured in the “Edo Meisho Zue” (Guide to Famous Spots of Edo). On the Kosh in-do stone tower in Kosh in-do Shr ine in Tokyo nowadays, one can still see restored text from 1657. Furthermore, it is also written that buried underneath is a monolith with text dating back to 1502, more than a century earlier. The god Sarutahiko Okami is also jointly worshipped in this shrine. The character for “shin” in “Koshin-do” can also be read as “Saru”, that is why the god Sarutahiko is often worshipped in Koshin-do shrines.

Sarutahiko Okami (Sugamo, Koshinzuka) 13Hosaka Tokuemon was a w ise ru le r o f Sugamo Village, and during the Edo era, from 1542 to 1555, his ancestors built an estate along the Yabatagawa River and worshipped the poet Sugawara no Michizane as the guardian god of the estate on a stretch of high ground to the east side of the premise. The shrine is also known by the name of “Koyasu Tenmangu”.This shrine is the very reason the surrounding area is often called “Tenjinyama”.Incidental ly, Jumonj i University was a Tenj inyama ranch back in the Meiji era ( 1868 - 1912).

Sugawara Shrine 14

Otori Shrine was built in 1688 to be a local Inari shrine (a shrine to worship the god “Inari”) by Shinzaemon, a resident of Sugamo. Afterwards, the Reikan-in Temple of the Nichiren school of Buddhism became its auxiliary temple, and it was put under its protection. The reason for this is said to be that during the 1844 - 1847 chrysanthemum boom in the Sugamo area, the “Oeshiki” (anniversary of a founder’s passing) held at Reikan-in Temple used chrysanthemum flowers to weave records of the life of the great monk Nichiren. 1864 was the first time the “Tori-no-Ichi” (Bird Day) ceremony was held, after that it went by the name “Otori-sama”, and became an Inari god for the people of Edo, where it continues to be loved and worshipped to the present day.

Otori Shrine 15 Shusse Inari Shrine 16Shusse Inari Shrine worships the god “Ukanomitama”, the same god as the Three Great Inari Shrines of Japan (Kyoto Fushimi etc), who governs over abundant crops, prosperous business and personal success. The shrine was relocated to its current location in 1903 due to construction to expand the Kamotsu Line running through Otsuka Station.

Tenso Shrine 17The Tenso Shrine worships the local guardian god of old Sugamo Village (which today is about half of Toshima-ku), and got its start in 1321 when the feudal lord Toshima Kagemura welcomed the god of Kotaijingu Shrine in Ise to worship. Within the grounds are a pair of massive, towering ginkgo trees called the “Husband-and-Wife Ginkgo”, which are about 600 years old and 25m tall. There is also a statue of a “Komainu” (guardian dog) breastfeeding its pup, which helps calm the hearts of visitors.

In 1880 the old Senkawa Josui Waterways area was donated by the city’s people to Tokyo city, and in 1940 it was opened as a park. It is the oldest park in Toshima-ku . The Senkawa Josu i Wate rways was a b ranch diverged from the Tamagawa Josui Waterways in 1696 to provide drinking water for the people of Edo, and it f lowed al l the way to the current Rikugi-en Gardens, Hongo and Yushima Island. There are still valves used for supplying water in the park, and underground there are diversion weirs and settling basins to draw water all the way to Rikugi-en Gardens.

Senkawa Josui Park 18Somei Cemetery used to be the grounds of an estate in Hayashida-han, of the former Harima-no-Kuni area (a region that is part of present-day Hyogo), and it got its name from a spring by the name of Somei that used to flow through the region. It is also where the Yoshino Cherry Tree comes from, which is synonymous with Japanese cherry blossoms, which local planters would sell to all around the country from the late Edo to early Meiji era. In later years it became a city cemetery, and the resting place of many famous artisans, such as the artist and scholar Kokuzo Okakura, novelist Shimei Futabatei, sculptor and poet Kotaro Takamura, and his wife, a painter, Chieko Takamura.

Edobashi Park is a sunny playground located along the Yamanote Line, with equipment geared towards young children such as swings, slides and see-saws. There’s also a large, rocket-shaped toy which has become the symbol of the park. With i ts rows of cherry blossom trees surrounding the park and which stretch as far as the eye can see, this is also a famous flower-viewing spot in spring.

The area surrounding Gankyu-dori Street (Cancer Research Road), from the Shinden Policebox near Miyanaka Park to Otsuka Station is the Tanihatagawa River. From Otsuka Station it continues through the South Gate, and to the Koraku-en gardens. Now the river has largely become a culvert, flowing underground.

Hojoji Temple is the only temple in Toshima-ku that worships a statue of Shotoku Taishi in its Hexagonal Hall, and where one can partake in his remarkable wisdom. There is also a pure-gold statue of the great monk Shinran by the artisan Koun Takamura, open to the public once every year on the first Sunday of December. It is said that in the first years of the Taisho era (around 1912 ), one could see the platform of Otsuka Station from the premises.

A Japanese garden constructed in 1702 by Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa, lord of Kawagoe-han, and who served the 5th generation shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa. The park is designed for leisurely strolls with ponds, hills and streams running around the premises. The name of the park comes from the “Rikugi”, or “Six Principles of Poetry” from the “Shi Jing” (Classic of Poetry), the oldest col lection of poems from China. The six principles include three styles: “Airs”, “Odes” and “Hymns”, and three formats: “straightforward narrative”, “explicit comparison” and “implied comparison”. The park is famous for its Shidare-zakura (Weeping Cherry Blossoms), azaleas, and red leaves, especially in spring and autumn when the cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are lit up respectively, turning the park into a bustling place.

Rikugi-en Gardens 21

The grounds were donated to Tokyo City by Masao Shibusawa, third son of Eiichi Shibusawa in 1938, and it was developed into a park thereafter. In the park there sti l l remains stone monoliths, belonging to the grounds of a religious university that used to be on the western side of the park in the middle-Meij i era. There is also a monument commemorating the neighborhood anti-air training performed in the presence of the Empress on May 1943, called the “Kogogu no Kahi”.

Miyanaka Park 23

Utsusemi Bridge was first constructed in 1903, with the completion of Otsuka Station. The word “Utsusemi” means the shell of a cicada. The name comes from when Emperor Meiji visited this region and saw many cicada shells left behind at the red pine trees in the local Inari Shrine. From then on the pine tree was called “Utsusemi no Matsu”, and then the bridge “Utsusemi Bridge”.

Utsusemi Bridge 24Back in the time of Japan’s involvement with the Pacific Theatre in World War 2, this park was a treatment center for wounded soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. There is still a stone memorial of that time when this park was a home that cared for the casualties of war.

Sugamo Park 25

It is said that travelers of the Nakasendo Route often “borrowed” the porches of the homes of farmers neighboring the road as a resting place to unpack their lunchboxes. During those times some of the travellers often saw strange vegetables in the gardens of those farmers, and asked for seeds to plant on their own. And so the farmers became seed sellers as a side business.

Saihoj i Temple was re located here in 1926 f rom Asakusa Shoten Town in Tokyo. Within the temple there is a statue of a Maneki-neko (beckoning cat), in loving memory of a cat that gave its l i fe to save i ts owner, a courtesan by the name of Usugumo Tayuu. Upon learning of her pet’s sacrifice, Usugumo was overcome with grief and made this statue in its memory.

Zenyoji Temple belongs to the Tendai school of Buddhism, and is a branch monastery of the Kaneij i Temple in Ueno. It goes by the alias of “Yakuozan” (representing the mountain), and also “Enjuji” (representing the temple itself), and it has deep ties to the Shobo-in Temple. It is said to have been built on Ueno Mountain between 824 - 833 by the great monk Ennin, relocated to Shitaya-Sakamoto between 1655 - 1672, and finally settling in its current location in 1912. In the main hall there is a 3m tall Enma statue, one of the Three Great Enma Statues of Edo. Within the premise there is also the grave of Kenzan Ogata (younger brother of Korin Ogata, a Japanese painter), and also the grave of Toshiko Yuasa, a female Japanese nuclear physicist who worked in France.

The surrounding area used to be prosperous for its animal husbandry, and even now there is sti l l the “Ekigyu Kuyoto” (Memorial Tower for Diseased Cows) for those animals. Furthermore, in Koshinzuka, which was built in 1904, there is a sign post reading “East is Sugamo Koshinzuka, ahead is Sugamo Prison, to the right is Otsukamichi”.

Tofukuji Temple 12Honmyoji Temple is a temple of the Hokke school of Buddhism, originally located in Maruyama, Hongo in Aichi under the name of Tokuharuyama Sojiin Honmyoji Temple. It is said to be the origin of the Meireki no Kaji (Great Fire of Meireki) (commonly named “Furisode no Kaji” or “The Long-sleeve Fire”) in 1657, the largest fire in the history of Japan which claimed the lives of 108, 000 people, however it is now considered that the Shogunate requested the temple to take the blame for the true origin of the fire. Within the premises there are also the graves of Toyama Kagemoto, the main character of the play “Saruyama no Kinsan”; Chiba Shusaku, a famous swordsman of Edo; and the grand master of the game of Go.

Parks / Gardens Historic landmark

Opening in 1928 , this is a historical park with a modern atmosphere. At the time of its opening, it was a state-of-the-art facil ity with a garden for educational purposes. Between 1848 and 1854 , the area from Otsuka Hospital to here was the estate of Hidenari Mori (Hatamoto estate), of the Mori clan in Choshu-han. Everyday people, young and old, men and women, gather here to exercise to the tunes of a radio.

Otsuka Park 39A park surrounded by greenery that tells of the passing of seasons, from Yoshino Cherry blossoms in spring, to faintly-colored ginkgo trees in autumn. Within the grounds there’s also a sprawling square, and sandboxes and toys for children. The yellow train cars were installed in the park in 1971 as a memento of the nostalgic city trains which carried people everywhere, and since then they have become beloved symbols of the park.

The grounds of the Sugamo Market , be long ing to the Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, was once part of the estate of the clan of Todo Takatora, lord of the Tsu-han belonging to the Izumo-no-Kuni area. From 1796 it became a cultivated forest of the shogunate under Ina Hanzaemon, then from 1798 it became the Sugamo Medicinal Gardens, under the management of Chohaku Shibue. Many herbs with curat ive propert ies are cult ivated here. It is also in these gardens that in 1817 Chohaku Shibue became the first person to raise sheep and attempt to make wool in Japan, and so this park was also called the “Menyo Yashiki”, or “estate of sheeps”.

“Somei Yoshino” (Yoshino Cherry Tree) is a type of cherry blossom that was sold by planters from Somei Vil lage in Sugamo to people all over Japan from the late Edo to early Meiji era. At first it was named “Yoshinozakura” due to its origins on Yoshino Mountain in Nara. However, in 1900 , after surveying the cherry blossoms in Ueno Park, Professor Yorinaga Fujino decided that since Yoshino Mountain also has its own mountainous cherry blossoms, the name may cause misunderstandings, and so they decided to give it a new name of “Somei Yoshino” in the Magazine of the Japan Gardening Society, and the name has stuck ever since.

After part ic ipat ing in the “Ta ise i Hokan” ( restorat ion of political authority to the Emperor in 1867), the 15th shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa l ived a long per iod of seclusion in Shizuoka, but when he was 61 years old he moved back to Sugamo. His estate in Sugamo has a gate facing part of the Nakasendo Route (now Hakusan-dori Road), and in a corner of his garden is an apricot grove from his hometown of Mito. For this reason, his estate was lovingly dubbed the “Keiki-san no Umeyashiki” (Yoshinobu’s Apricot Estate) by the local people. However, with the completion of the railway going by Sugamo, he grew irritated of the noise and moved to Kohinata Dairokuten Town in Koishikawa-ku, Tokyo in 1901.

The 27-stop (Minowa - Akabane) and 32-stop (Arakawa-shako - Waseda) routes were both going to be abolished, but due to strong requests by the community and the fact that they were specialized tracks, only the Oji - Akabane route of the 27-system was abolished, leaving the Minowa - Arakawa route of the 27-stop route and the Waseda - Arakawa-shako route of the 32-stop route preserved. In 1974 the name of the line was changed to the “Arakawa Line”, which has been kept ever since. The line runs for a total of 12. 21km from Waseda to Minowa, lasting about 49 minutes a trip.

In order to promote the relaunch of the Arakawa Line to the people of Tokyo, in 1978 f ive 6000 Ser ies streetcars were decorated as “Hanadensha” (floral streetcars) and served on the line for 1 week around April 1st. On August 1st 2011, to commemorate 100 years of service, Toei Transportation restored the Hanadensha’s operation after 33 years. These streetcars all feature flourishing decorations, which people enjoy viewing.

Tenso Shrine CeremonyEvery year the ceremony is generally held on the Saturday or Sunday closest to September 17th, with about 100 “Mikoshi” (portable shrines), large and small, parading throughout the town. The “Mikoshi” start from the “Mikisho” (place to offer sake to gods) in the shrines, of which there are 33 counting both Otsuka and Sugamo. Each area contributes to the festival by hanging up flags around the “Mikisho” and by making group “Mikoshi”.

Sugamo Somei Yoshino Sakura FestivalThere are more than 2 , 000 Yoshino Cherry trees around the current Sugamo area.Because the old Sugamo vil lage in the Edo era was close to the Daimyo’s (Japanese feudal lord) suburban residence, many career planters lived in the village. These planters used their skills to give to the world beautiful flowers such as the “Somei Yoshino” (Yoshino Cherry), which are an improved form of “Japanese Cherry”, and the admirable “Japanese Primrose”, a type of chrysanthemum. In order to celebrate its place as the home of Yoshino Cherry blossoms, the Sugamo Station Shopping District coordinated the start of the “Sakura Matsuri Parade” from 1977.The parade became an event beloved by the locals, and eventually grew to become the “Sugamo Somei Yoshino Sakura Festival”, one of the biggest events of Sugamo. At the Festival nowadays, aside from the main event “Sakura Matsuri Parade”, there are also side events such as the “Sugamo Station Noren Market” and the “Sugamo Puzzle Rally” which are held with the support from the city of Tokyo

and Toshima-ku.The “Sakura Matsuri Parade” is comprised of two parts. One is the “Traffic Safety Parade”, which is supported by the Sugamo Police Station as part of their campaign to promote traffic safety in spring. The second is the “Sugamo Marching Classic”, a unique event where marching clubs from middle and high schools compete to show off their skills before a panel of judges. Many spectators are moved by their efforts and dedication.During the time of the Sakura Festival there is also the “Sugamo Station Noren Market”, where stores in the shopping district offer unique services, and the “Sugamo Puzzle Rally”, which people participate by finding keywords hidden around the area. Koshinzuka is where the three Trai ls – Nakasendo straight ahead, Ojido to the left and Otsukado to the right converge before heading into Edo, and thus it was a resting spot bustling with tea shops. The name of Orido-dori Street came from the words “Ori” (to turn) and “do” in “Edo”, with the meaning of “Turn here to reach Edo”. Furthermore, in Koshinzuka the god Sarutahiko, a god of guidance for travelers, is also worshipped. As an aside, it seems that if one is heading towards Edo, taking the Otsukado is faster than the Nakasendo.

In the early Showa era, Otsuka was an especially busy area of Tokyo. At that t ime Sangyo-dori Street in Otsuka was a thriving Geisha Quarter, and even now there are stil l stylish Japanese-style restaurants in the area and courtesans l ike those in the o ld era , as wel l as f lowers which decorate Otsuka at night. The Gondayu Inari Shrine standing near the Yamanote Line Dotegiwa on the way to Otsuka Sangyochi is the

same god of business prosperity as the one in Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. In olden times the Tanihatagawa River used to flow through this area, and the entire Otsuka Station area used to have meadows with many gushing springs. Near the North Gate of Otsuka Station there is a bridge called Fujihashi Bridge, and next to it there was a small Inari Shrine – the Gondayu Inari, but now it has moved to its current location.
