Our Illinois AGD delegation to the AGD Annualmeeting has just returned from Baltimore. Ourdelegation consisted of eight delegates, eightalternate delegates, our Executive Secretary as wellas our Regional Director and Trustee. Under theleadership of our Regional Director, Dr. Susan Bishop,a plan was developed during our delegation caucusto deal with all of the issues that came before theHouse of Delegates. Specific delegation memberswere assigned to address specific issues on the floorof the House. In sum, we accomplished almost all ofour goals.

Our Region received National awards in twocategories. We received awards for Advocacy andas Constituent of the Year. The Constituent of theYear Award is the most prized of all the Nationalawards. We also received National HonorableMention (second place) in Continuing Educationand Public Information. Our Executive Secretary, DebNoordhoff, did her usual sterling job of keeping our

noses to the grindstone and fostering communicationbetween ourselves as well as with other delegations.

Our delegation was honored to be able to serve ata time when one of our own, Dr. Paula Jones, wasAGD National President, the first woman to hold thisposition. We continued to build relationships withNational Officers and other delegations.

Our reception for our seven new Fellows, two newMasters, and one new Lifetime Learning & ServiceAwardee, was well attended.

Our social events fostered comradeship within ourdelegation, and we seriously threatened the survivalof the crab population of Chesapeake Bay.Everyone did their job so efficiently that I, as yourPresident, just leaned back & enjoyed the ride.

Yes, it is that time of year again. It would be nice tospeak of the lazy days of summer but as I write this,we are expecting a 73 degree high in July. Summerbrings about relaxation, a break from routine for most, and vacation time. As summer turns to fall, it alsobrings about a return to all our responsibilities. Asdentists we have many duties to our patients, families, and our profession. I also consider it oneof my obligations to give care to those who cannotreceive it due to medical and financial reasons.

Summer and Fall bring the return of the IFDH Raffle:Giving Back Smiles! including a Grand Prize of $2500.Economic times are tough now and even tougher forthe elderly and disabled Illinois residents. The IllinoisFoundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped (IFDH)is one of the charitable arms of both ISDS and IAGD.I would like to thank the 825 dentists and 202 labsthat already volunteer. The DDS program helpshundreds of vulnerable people get over $1 million in

care each year. Though we have many contributingtheir services, we still need financial assistance tosupport these wonderful volunteers.

You may have received a tax-deductible $100 ticketin the mail. I urge you to mail it in. If you could, would you consider purchasing one or moreadditional tickets. This can be done through ourwebsite at www.idfdhonline.org, or you can contactme or Mr. Steve Jambor, IFDH Vice President at 773-263-9962 or via email at [email protected] .Entries must be received by September 13, after theconclusion of the ISDS annual meeting. Drawingwill be held after the IFDH board meeting September14, 2009. You can also visit our website atwww.ifdhonline.org .

Thank you for your support and for all the charitableworks and acts performed by our Illinois dentists.

PresidentElects Reportby Dr. Betty Haberkamp

CaveatDoctorby Dr. Marta Speakman

Heres the scenario: Its Saturday afternoon. Thelast patient of the day is in the chair. Its a big caseso I scheduled it late in the day so nobody wouldinterrupt the procedure. Thirty minutes into theappointment a nice looking guy walks into the office. He is in pain. He holds his hand close to his leftcheek. He states that his 70 year old dentist in LakeZurich is unavailable. A week ago, a filling fell outand the dentist did something, but the pain hasgotten worse over time.

What we did: Everyone knows the routine. He filledout the papers. We scanned his ID. No insurance,he would pay by check. He was waiting in thereception room for two hours before I could get himinto the operatory. Indeed, somebody before me hadperformed a pulpotomy. The temporary had fallenout and just a cotton pellet was left. So we took careof him as best we could. At the front desk, on theway out, he asks, Am I supposed to be withoutpain after what you did? Yes, I said, however, ifyou are still in pain, here is my cell number. Call mewith the number of your pharmacy.

What happened next: Its the week end so I wouldhate to bother you. I would like to have somethingright awayjust in case, he said. So I went on theinternet and got the phone number of the pharmacyof his choice.

It was the Wal-Mart in Vernon Hills. When Ireached the pharmacist she told me that she willNEVER fill a prescription for that person because hegoes from dentist to dentist and then alters the

prescriptions that he gets. My face turned red. Ilooked at the man and told him that I truly do notknow what to tell him but that I think I was gettingscrewed! While I said that to him, he was writing acheck saying, I would NEVER do that!

Coincidentally, the check he wrote was drawn onmy bank! So before I cashed it, I told the teller whatmy suspicions were. When she opened the mansaccount her eyes bulged out! He had over $10,000.00in bounced checks. She was surprised that nobodyhad caught it. This account should have beenclosed a long time ago, she said.

And after that: On the next day, I visited my localWalgreens Pharmacy. The pharmacist thereconfirmed what the one at Wal-Mart had said. Shenot only echoed the information but gave me tenpages of his records dating from late last year. Shealso gave me the address of a web site which I couldhave used to check on his record. The site wasorganized last January by the Illinois Department ofHuman Services.

Lessons learned: This patient has taught me somuch. He looked nice and was very believable. Hewas not pushy. That worked and probably still worksto his advantage. I have learned from a couple ofdentists who were on the Walgreen list that he wouldalter a prescription: He would change #16 to 46 orfrom 0 refills he would change it to 10. Im still trackinghim and its hard to believe what I have learned aboutwhat goes on outside the confines of our offices. He

Welcome New Members!!!

Page 6

still goes to dentists in our areasometimes two or three time to thesame practitioner with a month! Sometimes he visits a couple ofdentists on the same day.

Other ramifications: I was even thinking of reporting the guy to thepolice. I am a mother of a teenage daughter who is approached inher high school by drug dealers. This is a North Shore high school!!.It is just unbelievable that one individual could use so may pills. Most likely he is selling them and kids are a very lucrative market.THIS MUST BE STOPPED!!.

Bureaucratic Inconsistancies and solutions:

I do not understand the situation that arises when we as healthcareproviders are obligated to report child neglect or abuse, but not thedrug abuse that can indirectly as well as directly affect our children.I still do not know if HIPPA would object to us reporting somethinglike this to the local police but in the meantime we have a wonderfulinformation sourcethe Illinois Department of Human Services WebSite. Heres their address: https://www.ilpmp.org/login.php. Anydentist with a DEA number, after signing in, may use it at any timewithout calling a pharmacist.

Now youve read my story. I hope my happenings can help othersto avoid what I experienced.
