Dear All,

It took a while to get used to living in the coastal part of Pembrokeshire.

When we first arrived, many years ago now, it was hard not to think we were

on holiday all the time and really put down roots.

For me, the key came in realising that our communities are tidal, but the

tide does not flow in and out twice each day. The tide of our communities

works over the whole year.

Winter is low tide, there is lots of space, there is not much urgency. Like

the sand-living creatures we dig in deep and wait for the sea to return.

Summer, however, is high tide. The villages and the roads fill up with people.

The locals are very busy making a living before the tide turns. Socially too

we try to make the most of it with fetes and exhibitions and festivals and

regattas. Visitors remark on the peace and quiet and locals think to them-

selves how frantic and noisy it is.

So if you are making the most of every bit of sunshine to get in a crop, or

making endless beds, or serving up endless meals please try to take a mo-

ment to see what the visitors see and enjoy the glory of this peninsula. Per-

haps it might help carry through the dark days of winter. If you are a visi-

tor, welcome, please take a moment to appreciate the difficulties and joys

of living on the edge of Wales. Perhaps it might make you more willing to

support local events and buy some local produce.

But whether this is a time of relaxation or anxiety for you, may God

bless you in your work and in your leisure,

Gaynor, Andrew and Rhiannon

St Ishmaels Church

On Saturday 15th June the sun shone for us and we celebrated St Ishmaels Day,

joined by Ferryside, Camrose and Uzmaston St Ishmaels churches. The pro-

gramme included a walk down to Monkhaven and a short service and then twenty

six of us sat down for a wonderful tea provided by the ladies of the parish before

we waved everyone off. It was truly a lovely afternoon and we hope to visit Fer-

ryside next year. My thanks to all who baked, made sandwiches, made everyone

so welcome and especially a big thank you to Gaynor for the service and organisa-

tion. Heather Phippen

CORONATION HALL, DALE

4.00pm – 6.00pm ALL WELCOME

Monk Haven by the late Joan Sinclair

I sit here in the churchyard so calm and serene The stream making music as it tip toes to the sea. The birds sing in chorus like a choir from above, While the trees sway in harmony conducting with love.

I walk down the valley where snowdrops nod their head The bluebells are rising from their winter bed. I wander on down the path to the beach Where is the arch that once I would reach?

Sitting on the rocks with the sun on my face I watch the waves chase each other, as in a race. In wonder and awe I have heard and seen God’s love and grace In these harmonious scenes his breathtaking garden provided for me. I thank you Lord and praise your name, for the beautiful vistas that I have seen Back to the church, where I kneel down and pray, To thank you Lord for this beautiful day. I want him to know nature brings me such pleasure, How grateful I am for his numerous treasure.

The spring maintenance/work party in Dale was a great success. The Dale Community Council would like to thank all those who have given their time and energy to help tidy Dale village … special thanks go to Mark Gainfort, Paul Garnish, Tim Hibbert, Wyn Hopkins, Dan Jones, Lyn Jones, Sean Kehoe, Ian McColloch, John and Rosemary Mecklenburgh, Mark Reynolds, Hugh Rich-ards, Rob and Gail Smith, Andy Truelove and Jim Warr.

Charity/Fun Runs - The Council wel-comed Mr. Dave Astins to the meeting. He is the Events Manager for the Dale Half Marathon and the Broad Haven Triathlon. This year on Sunday June 30th he is helping Howies with their Spud Run starting and finishing from the Marloes Sands Car Park. (Howies is an independent active clothing company based in West Wales, owned and run by its employees.) He explained the arrangements for the day, and answered members questions on traffic and safety issues. Noted also that a “Tour of Pem-brokeshire” had passed through St. Brides on the 28th May – organised by Mr. Peter Walker. No problems identified after the Endurance Life run in late April. Community Asset Transfers – Mr. Astins also works for the County Council with regard to Asset Transfers from the County Council to Town and Community Councils. The toilets at Martins Haven are owned by the National Trust, and with the end of the Lease the County Council is negotiating with the Trust to take over their running. The toilets at St. Brides are owned and run by the County Council with a covenant for that purpose, and they also own the land immediately around the toi-

lets. No deeds have been identified for the Marloes toilets. The Council advised Mr. Astins that as the toilets were provided for the use of visitors rather than community residents then no transfer was envisaged. The provision of toilets they thought would be part of the services for the Pembroke-shire wide tourism industry. Planning Matters – NP/19/0303/FUL – Glebe Cottage, Glebe Lane, Marloes – Side extension to replace the existing conserva-tory. Members were satisfied that the replacement building, was more in keeping with the vernacular style in the village, and would have no impact on neighbours. Cllr. Jessop will coordinate the responses neces-sary at the Local Development Plan hearings in July. It was also agreed that he would draft a few sentences for the Chairman to consider with regard to the Climate Emer-gency announced by the Welsh Govern-ment. County Council Matters – Noted that new signs have been erected at the Mullock Junction. Playground sign to be replaced by Hall Cottage on the new lamp post. Clerk to update County Cllr. Owens on the outstanding matters. The Council agreed to request that for a trial period the end light at West End, Marloes is to be switched off all day for local residents to enjoy the “Dark Skies” experience. The County Council has advised that they will switch off the light until the Community Council review the trial in January 2020. Hedge/Grass Cutting – Complaints had been made to members and the County Council that the hedges from Milford and Haverfordwest to the Mullock junction had been cut too early. The Clerk advised that the hedges to Martins Haven had been cut on the 18th June 2018, although the Com-munity Council had only asked for them to be cut to Marloes. Cllr. Owens advised

Community Councils Community Councils Community Councils Community Councils that the main contractors would start cutting on the 1st July 2019, and the early cutting this year was done to accommodate the Broad Haven Triathlon. It was again suggested, that the hedges to Marloes are cut early in the interests of road safety, and that Monday was a good day as there were no boats to Skomer. Cllr. Owens was reminded that the B4327 to Dale is also the high tide alterna-tive to the Coastal Path from Mullock, and that from Pickleridge to Dale the coastal path is then on the road. Police Matters – No problems in this area over the Spring Bank Holiday. For the rest of the summer, residents are reminded to report immediately any suspicious activity to Dyfed Powys Police via the 101 service. St. Brides Haven – Concern was ex-pressed about overnight camping at this location, and Cllr. Owens was asked if the County Council Enforcement Team can cover this area, as it is subject to a parking order. To also ask, that the toilet lights are switched off overnight to save on electric. Since the meeting, it is noted that the nearby Telephone kiosk is now working, but a card has to be used for payment, not cash. How-ever, the 999 emergency service is available without payment required. National Trust Matters – The Clerk advised that Mr. Underhill sent his apologies for the meeting. Today, it was confirmed that Pembrokeshire County Council have been appointed to undertake the Marloes Visitor Experience Project. Noted that a Stakeholder meeting will be held on the 9th July, and the Community Council will be invited to attend. Council Audit – The meeting reviewed the Accounting Statements prepared by the Clerk; they also received the report from the internal auditor, and then agreed the Annual Governance Statements read out by the Chairman, Cllr. Smithies. The approval and certification was completed by the Chairman and the Financial Officer. The

Clerk will publish the document for the exercise of elector’s rights by the 16th June. Business Signs - The Clock House has asked the Clerk to provide details of the County Council contact to discuss having official business signs. The meeting noted with regret that some of their temporary signs have been removed or damaged in recent months. Footpaths – Noted that further work will be undertaken on Frankies Lane later this summer. Plans for the Frog/Gull path are ongoing. Cllr. Jessop has spoken to St. Ishmaels Community Council about the possibility of a Gull/Mouse Path avoiding the use of roads as much as possible. Bus Service – Agreed that this Council approach the County Council to see if the Saturday closure could be replaced next year with a closure on perhaps Monday, to avoid change-over day, and enable the older chil-dren to travel on a non-school day. Please pass on complaints from visitors as well as local residents to [email protected] PACTO (Pembrokeshire Association of Community Transport Organisa-tions) was established in 2004, to bring together, strengthen and represent the community transport sector in Pembroke-shire. We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. Drivers are wanted for a new lift share project being developed later this year. For more infor-mation about Take Me Too! please visit www.takemetoo.org.uk or contact 01437 775033. Next Meetings – The next meeting of the Council will be held on Monday 8th July 2019, 7.30pm at Marloes Village Hall, when the business meeting will be held. Community residents of Marloes & St. Brides are very wel-come to attend, and may speak at the invitation of the Chairman. The August meeting is sched-uled to be held on Monday 12th August, – please see notices nearer the time.

St IshmaelsSt IshmaelsSt IshmaelsSt Ishmaels Items from the meeting held on 10th June 2019 in the Memorial Hall at 2.00 p.m. PROPOSED MARLOES – DALE FOOT-PATH. Mr Jessop asked to be allowed to outline a proposed extension of the Dale – Marloes path (The “Gull-Frog” Path), the waymarking of which had already been agreed with the Nat. Parks, to St. Ishmaels. It was suggested that such a path, which would follow existing footpaths, could be called “The Mouse” path and would enable greater publicity for, and access to, the village. After some discussion, the idea was agreed by councillors in principle and it was asserted that the council would support this initiative. (Mr. Jessop then left) MATTERS ARISING Garden Centre Planning Application. Cllr Everett stated that he had heard nothing further. Donation to Garden Centre. The clerk in-formed the meeting that he had sent a cheque to Simon for £50 as a charity dona-tion regarding the 3 boundary flower boxes in the village. There was some discussion about these and other donations. Cllr Everett suggested that we should discuss future donations with the Garden Centre in due course. DONATIONS Wales Air Ambulance and Paul Sartori Foundation had both received donations from the clerk on behalf of the council. MEMORIAL HALL The meeting was reminded that the following Friday (14th June) was the absolute cut-off date for bids. The agents had reported to the clerk that there were five firm bids in existence, ranging from those substantially below, to those substantially above, the published asking price of £30K. It was reported by Cllr Everett that he had had representation from one of the bidders who wanted to restore and maintain the existing memorial tablets. The clerk said that he had received

interest from another local bidder but without any bidding figure. (This subsequently arrived on the deadline date) It was agreed that the council should meet on Monday, 24th June at 2,00 p.m. in the Memorial Hall in order to discuss the extant offers. P.C.C. PROGRESS ON QUERIES BY TISH C.C. A list of complaints that had been forwarded to P.C.C. by the clerk were discussed. A reply by Darren Thomas was read out. The problems of the deterioration of the Sandy Haven slipway lay in the un-known ownership of the land and the council had affirmed that it did not lie in their area of responsibility. The clerk said that he would talk further to Mr. George Llewellin, P.C.N.P. Authority and the Land Registry to try to ascertain responsibility. Following an email from County Cllr. Reg Owens to Mr. Thomas, other items of concern had apparently been brought to the attention of other various section heads of P.C.C. The deterioration of Long Lane was a matter of urgent concern. OTHER MATTERS

1. The necessary replacement of the timbers on the existing Trim Trail by the sports field was highlighted.

2. Dog Fouling was, as ever, a concern.

3. Cllr. Hawkins aired the problems of the inadequate path repair from Trewarren Rd to Lindsway Drive. Also, that one of the street lights seemed not to have been repaired.

4. Annoyance was expressed by several councillors about the gates that Monkhill Farm kept on leaving across the road down to the entrance to Soldier’s Rock. It was illegal and an impediment to pedestrians. It was decided to send a letter to Mr. Stoddard with this complaint. 5. The overgrown state of the hedges in Stuart’s Lane.

(INFORMATION RECEIVED SUBSEQUENT TO MEETING The clerk had received an email from P.C.C. to say that the cutting of verges and hedges would commence on the 1st July…or earlier, if possible) DATE OF NEXT MEETING. 24th June at 2,00 p.m. in the Memorial Hall

Walwyns CastleWalwyns CastleWalwyns CastleWalwyns Castle MATTERS ARISING Condition of road running through Rickeston. The Clerk advised the Council that Gordon Smith had emailed to thank them for the their support in requesting signage to stop large vehicles using the road and to thank County Coun-cillor Peter Morgan for facilitating their quick response. Pembrokeshire Community Delivery Project The Clerk circulated the Community Deliv-ery Project document received from Pem-brokeshire County Council. Pembrokeshire County Council advised all Town and Community Councils that their Community Delivery Project had been approved by the Council's Cabinet on the 2 July 2018. The project is seeking community support for various ' non-statutory services' which otherwise might be at risk of being withdrawn. For example, Public toilets, Play Parks, Gardens and Open Spaces.

They point out that Community delivery is not new and there are many examples of communities taking on these services and managing their green spaces. The main options are: County Council continues to maintain the service with the Town and Community Councils meeting the cost; Maintenance responsibility being transferred to Town and Community Councils; A full asset transfer to the Town and Com-munity Councils takes place. Where the Town and Community Council does not wish to take on the responsibility the County Council will likely place the asset into minimal maintenance or declare it surplus to requirements where practical to do so. Meetings will be held with Town and Com-munity Councils over the coming months in order that services that the Council is going to take over can be factored in to their precept for 2020/21. They advised Community delivery is about giving local people greater control in the future of their area.

COASTLANDS LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

We are very sorry the talk by Father Gildas, due at the end of June, had to be postponed, we will try and rearrange it for next year’s programme. The alterna-tive event arranged for Members - a talk by Malcolm Cullen on RAF Dale and a look at The Barrack Room Cartoons happens while printing of this copy is under-way so I can give no update as to what happened. I can also give you no details of the trip to Pembroke Castle - as the visit is taking place long after this copy will have dropped through your letterbox! So you see what you have missed by not being a member - easily rectified at the talk in September, details of which will be in the next issue of PP. The other item of news is the NEW exhibition in The Old Stables Heritage Centre “Homes and Gardens with a History". which starts on 18th July 2019. This exhibition will explain some of the history of our older houses, while also looking at houses which once had other lives and so other histories. There are some ’lost’ gardens in the area which will be illustrated so come along and see if your house or holiday cottage is there...... To complement the exhibition The Dale Walled Garden will be open to visitors on Sunday 4th August from 2-5. There will be teas and coffee in St James Church in aid of their Roof Fund. We hope for members and visitors alike that the sun shines this summer so we can all enjoy the delights of our area.

For more details about the History Group please contact Yvonne (636251),

Margaret (636295) or Harriet (636668).

NCI Wooltack Point. This summer, NCI Wooltack Point has been celebra0ng its 10

th anniversary as one of the

Na0onal Coastwatch Ins0tute’s 54 lookout sta0ons. Established in 2009, NCI Wooltack

Point, near Marloes, maintains a visual and listening watch across St Brides Bay, Skomer

and the entrance to Milford Haven. It provides assistance in iden0fying emergencies and

assis0ng with keeping vessels and people safe. Manned by fully trained volunteers, the

sta0on works alongside HMCG, the RNLI and other local agencies in providing the eyes and

ears for this popular and beau0ful area of coastline.

Coinciding with the NCI’s 25th

anniversary, Wooltack Point’s sta0on has just had its exterior

carefully renovated so it can con0nue to operate in its stunning, but highly exposed loca-

0on on the Deer Park above Mar0n’s Haven, the departure point for the ferry to Skomer

Island.

Totally self funding, NCI Wooltack Point recently held a concert in Dale Corona0on Hall on

the 18th

May, with a fantas0c performance by West Wales choral and instrumental group

Frenzaloud. The evening raised funds for further renova0on which is needed at the sta0on,

where the windows will soon need to be replaced.

As a very busy summer lies ahead, NCI Wooltack Point always welcomes new members,

whether they wish to become watchkeepers or associate members. Anyone interested

should contact the sta0on on 07809 689835 or email: [email protected] for fur-

ther details.

their enthusiasm.

On the 18th June, members and friends of the WI visited Glyn Bach Gardens at Efailwen, near Llangolmen. A private garden owned by Peter and Carol Whittaker, which has been transformed over the last 7 years, see www.glynbachgardens.co.uk for further infor-mation. In addition to a Rose Garden, Bog Garden, Pond, Bee, Alpine and Herb Beds; the couple have built up a National Collection of Monarda plants, and is the garden is opened in aid of Plant Heritage. See www.plantheritage.org.uk to find out more on their conser-vation aims worldwide. All present enjoyed the visit, the day concluded with a meal at the St. Brides Hotel, Little Haven.

In July, we are organising the North Pembrokeshire Treasure Hunt for a dozen or more WI’s around Haverfordwest. Early in the month, we are helping with the catering for a special tea – more about that in September. On the 16th July we will visit the home of Mary Lewis for the Presidents Supper. No meetings will be held in August, and we re-sume with a business/social meeting in early September.

We finished last month with Mr. Richard Llewellyn Davies talking on old and new gardens in Pembroke-shire. His particular favourite is the gardens attached to Slebech Park which are being restored at present. He also pre-viewed new gardens - many of which are open to the public via the National Gardens Scheme.

On Bank Holiday Monday, WI members in conjunc-tion with grandparents, parents, and children of Coastlands School were busy serving Cream Teas to local residents and visitors in Dale Corona-tion Hall – the busiest session ever. Half the proceeds were donated to Coastlands PTA towards school projects. The young children present worked tirelessly, and impressed everyone with

COASTLANDS SCHOOL

Dear readers

I cannot believe how quickly time has passed. It only seems like yesterday I took up my position as head teacher at Coastlands and already we are well into the summer term with the long holidays ahead.

I have had the most wonderful welcome from the communities here. I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support. Being the head teacher of Coastlands is both a reward and a privilege. In our school we are fortunate to have exceptional children and enthusiastic parents who along with our dedicated teachers and gover-nors make this a special place to be!

We have had such a lot going on this year. Just a few highlights include:

• The pupils taking part in concerts and productions in the Coronation Hall Dale, St Ishmaels Sports and Social club, local churches and at Rickeston Mill.

• We have played cricket, rugby, netball and football against schools across Pembrokeshire.

• Our school gained the prestigious Eco Schools Platinum Award which is the result of many years of work by so many staff.

• Our pupils have taken part in beach cleans and sponsored walks and have raised money for our new goalposts.

• Our reading ambassadors were chosen to represent West Wales at the Na-tional Children’s Book Awards. This was a fantastic glitzy occasion where the pupils met famous authors and illustrators. (The teachers were very excited too.)

Coastlands PTA continues to work hard to raise money for our school. We would like to say a great big THANK YOU to the local organisations and businesses who support us with kind donations of raffle prizes and money. We couldn’t function without you!

A few dates coming up:

1.00pm Tuesday 2nd July (or Friday 5th July if Tuesday is wet) - Sports Day

5.00pm Thursday 11th July - summer BBQ and stalls

6.30pm Tuesday 16th July – our Summer Show at the Torch Theatre

I look forward to seeing many of you before the summer holiday begins.

Kindest regards

Sonja Groves

Medicinal LeechesMedicinal LeechesMedicinal LeechesMedicinal Leeches

Here is what Samuel Lewis had to say about Marloes in 1833:

“MARLAIS (MARLOES), a parish in the hundred of RHÔS, county of PEMBROKE, SOUTH WALES, 11 miles (W.S.W.) from Haverfordwest, containing 427 inhabitants. This parish is situated on the southern shore of Muggleswick bay, a lesser portion of St. Bride's bay, the western extremity forming a small promontory, and is partly bounded on the east by a small pill, or creek, of Milford Haven. It comprises a considera-ble tract of arable and pasture land, which, with the exception of a comparatively small portion, is enclosed and in a good state of cultivation. The village is principally inhabited by fishermen, who obtain a livelihood in the lobster and crab fisheries, which are carried on here to a considerable extent, and by the sale of leeches, which are found in great numbers in a sheet of water covering from sixty to seventy acres, called Marlais Mere, and which, during the summer months, when it is dry, affords excellent pasturage for cattle.”

Here is another quote: “The mere was common land until 1811; at that time Richard Fenton mentioned that it abounded in medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis), from which the villagers derived a considerable trade.”

The big question is – “are there still any there?” Medicinal leeches have declined dramati-cally all over the country and it is thought there are no longer any in the Mere, or indeed anywhere in Pembrokeshire – the reasons may be complex.

Over-exploitation was probably the initial problem – the trade hit its peak in the mid nineteenth century and each year tens of millions of leeches were exported to Europe and America. Then changes in land use, wetland drainage and reduction in grazing all played their part, followed the introduction of chemical worming treatments such as Ivermectin.

At Marloes Mere it is likely that, for a considerable period, cattle were not grazed on the marsh and this caused the final extinction of the medicinal leeches – they need large mammals walking around in the water on which they can attach themselves, in order to get the blood meals which enable them to grow and reproduce.

Recently, of course, leeches have become a valid treatment for certain conditions – their anti-coagulant properties improve the blood flow in the part of the body where they are attached, and they can also remove excess blood which is pooling in a wound. This aids healing. The leeches used for this are raised in special farms and many of these are in Wales - it is fascinating stuff – just try Googling “leech farms” to find out more. There is a particularly good BBC News story from 2013.
