After your hike I sug-gest visiting the Crawford Notch Train Depot, it’s right across from the lake, built by the Maine Central Railroad in 1891. The sta-tion is major stop for the

At the top of Crawford Notch there is a little lake, Saco Lake, the headwaters of the Saco River. There is a delightful short trail around the lake that is less than half a mile long. The trail begins at the south end of the Saco Lake at the outlet dam and follows along the east shore until it meets Route 302 at the north end of the lake.

Yes it is a short hike but it has a high fun factor. There are many log bridges and about half way around there is a sign that’s reads “AMC Idlewild (View)” at the foot of an impressive rustic stone stairway. The stairs lead upwards to the top of a two-tiered ledge with the remains of an old iron railing presumably placed there to prevent anyone from going too near the ledge’s edge.

I hiked around early in the morning and the lake’s placid waters reflected the splendid vista of Mount Avalon, Mount Tom and the blue sky. I made an attempt to skip a rock but it just made a splash. Even though I was not far from

Iron bars, a come-a-long and many volunteers are needed to build a trail. The hike to the fire tower is less than a mile from the parking area at the end of the Belknap Carriage Road. Next work day is August 9th, come join the fun!

teers continued work on Belknap Mountain’s Red Trail. This time my niece Rachel accompanied me and joined in the fun. The group welcomes new vol-unteers and no experience is necessary. We arrived dressed in work clothes and we brought along our lunch, water and work

gloves. The more experi-enced trail tenders moved large rocks into position to form steps and water bars. Rachel and I as-sisted whenever we could give a hand and we gath-ered smaller rocks, mined buckets of fill and helped work a come-a-long.

The next Red Trail work day is scheduled for Au-
