M y mentor Sir David is experienced in civil services and policy formulation. During each meeting on Saturday, we would discuss local and international news, and share our perspectives of the issues such as dispute in trade agreement between China and Taiwan and the Malaysian lost aircraft accident. Sometimes, we commented on the

policies lately released and engaged in discussions to find out in what ways the government can do better, and I benefited from it by thinking from more social perspectives. Sir David also told us that most of the political disputes are related to the historical factors, so learning more about the history of countries is conducive to understanding of the political affairs.

Sir David also listened to our sharing of university life and gave advice on our career plan. He also shared his experience in voluntary work to encourage us to care more about the community and take action. Moreover, I found the sharing of his personal life experience impressive. His story inspired me as it shows that determination and humbleness are the keys to success. He reminded us that the most important things for living is to enjoy life and like the people you meet. We should not to make life so busy that we forget to make a life.

It is my pleasure that my mentor is caring and attentive to our future plans, who offers a lot of advice for our career planning. I hope with his advice, I can understand more about my aspiration and better equip myself for achieving my goals.

Wong Tsz Yan (Public Health)

I have the opportunity to meet the previous mentees of Sir David. Most of them are now working as the high-ranking officials in the government or other commercial organizations. When I chatted with them, I could learn more about their jobs and it broadened my horizon. As I talked with them in English, it helped train my communication skills too. I think it

is really great to have all the mentees coming together as friends, and I hope to join their other meetings later. I would like to keep a close relationship with Sir David as what they do even after this academic year. Even after I graduate, Sir David could still give us advice on our career path and other matters.

TONG Ka Ki (English)

T he CUMP is very well-organised. Mentors of the programme are from a diversified background. Kick-off gathering and regular follow-up and publication allows mentees to keep in touch with mentors regularly.

The mentee group consist of schoolmates from different majors and also students or alumni from CUMP of previous years. I can learn a lot from valuable sharing from mentor as well as various experience from other mentees.

CHEUNG Fuk Shing (Quantitative Finance and Risk Management Science)

S ome of the mentees have graduated and they shared their experiences during work and travel. Sir David also made comment about their successful stories and encourage us to be determined.

We talked about the real estate policy in Singapore and reflected the same policy in Hong Kong. Besides, we discussed Chinese traditional poems and English poems.

Sir David shared second half of his personal story with us and some of his private photos over all these years. We also discussed some current issues and he showed us

the importance of using atlas.

T hanks to the CUHK mentorship programme. It provides me with great opportunity to have some valuable time

with my mentor, Agnes. In our first meeting, my mentor came to visit CUHK and I showed her around the cam-

pus. She shared a lot of her life experience and gave me some career advice. Afterwards, I had dinner with my

mentor and other mentees. We talked about our career aspirations and they encouraged me to try new things and not to fear

failure. I have gained new insight and perspective from them. It was a delightful evening.

I t is a good opportunity for me to make a nice friend with someone who are enthusiastic and

outstanding in education. Not only does it let me familiarize with Hong Kong education, but also know that there are people putting much effort in education with the same goals and ideas with me. I have much motivation to achieve my dream which is to be a teacher in the future.

I like my mentor so much as he is really a kind person. He is willing to share his thoughts with us, especially the ideas of education. I admired him a lot as he contributes much in education and gives the entire best thing to his students. He puts a lot of resources in adding the facilities for his school in order to give the best learning environment to his students. Although his office is simple and small, without sea view and luxury decoration, he enjoys his works. He is a helpful person. He said we can find him if we have any problems. It is true that he is patient to listen to us and help us solve problems. I do want to say thank you to

him. I will learn from him to contribute to education as much as I can.

The visiting to Sing Tao Daily Newspaper is the most unforgettable memory for me. I was strongly stimulated by talking with Mr. Siu, the CEO of Sing Tao Daily Newspaper, and Mr. Lo, the captain of Bastille Post. On that day, Dr. Chan invited them to have lunch with me and Sukey, another mentee of Dr. Chan. We talked about what university is and what we have to learn at university. It is out of our expectation that our discussion lasted for two hours. Mr. Lo gave us lots of valuable ideas that made me shocked since I had never thought about those questions. One thing he strongly emphasized is we have to be independent and critical. We should

have our own ideas. People always repeat the same thing but it is like a slogan as they do not know what the

importance and meaning of it. The time was great that I have learned a lot from these eminent people.

Dr. Chan used the spirit of New Asia College (I will work hard to overcome all the obstacles) to encourage us to work harder.

LI Ka Lee (Chinese Language and Literature)

W e had a lunch gathering in Tai Koo Shing with the CEO of Sing Tao Daily,

Mr. Siu Sai Wo. He was a classmate of Mr. Chan when they studied at CHUK. We then headed to Sing Tao Daily to have a visit. Apart from knowing how a newspaper company runs, we also learnt some admirable personality from our mentor and successful people like

Mr. Siu.

activities. Hope we can have more gatherings later!

F or once I doubt my ability to interact with somebody so wise, like Mr. Craig Chapman. My first impression of Craig is a person with broad horizon, from the globe to tiny details of places that he has travelled to, and as well as from the past to the present. He understands life as it is, and is able to discuss it from different perspectives.

Being offered with this opportunity to build a solid mentor-mentee relationship with Craig, we, along with the other two mentees, meet regularly at his office in Admiralty. We take turns in bringing up news articles and sharing our insights. I remember Craig having said that we are also going to meet one-on-one in the near future, and he is arranging a visit to an investment firm for us.

I was inspired by Craig on the following attitude in life,

1. "Something that everyone has got the same is time."

2. "We cannot undo the past so work on the present."

3. "Do not delay what you want to do, do not give yourself excuses such as being occupied by your major courses."

4. "Be afraid of not making mistakes."

5. "The most important thing in a company is people

Opportunities do not always happen and we are young for only once. Being serious in our study is important, but we should not neglect our development outside the classroom. Benefits from a mentorship programme like such is what we cannot obtain from our textbooks. Thank you for organizing this programme!

more about the hotel industry. Through having dinner in the hotel with Mr Chiu, I have found his passion towards his job. The food was also very special and delicious. I am grateful to have the opportunity to meet Mr Chiu.

MA Ka Yee (Medicine)

W e had the dinner with my mentor, Mr. Chiu, in Metropark Hotel, Wanchai. Before having the dinner, we had had a hotel visit. Then, we had

dinner at Le Chef restaurant. We shared a lot to each other, such as our studies, hobbies and expectation of future career path, etc. After that, we are more familiar with each other now. All in all, it was a wonderful night!

A s a mainland student, I benefit a lot from this programme . It is a good way for me to know more about Hong Kong through deep talks with local people, either with my mentor or another mentee. Also, as a business student, I have better understanding about the whole picture of the local business world.

I regard my mentor, Mr. Gary Choy, as a smart and considerate friend. The topics of our conversation are broad, from my personality to the whole business environment in Hong Kong. Now I have clear idea about local views of the current business situation. Besides that, I also enjoy meals with my mentor in Jockey club as well as Central, and see Hong Kong from a different but fresh aspect. What's more, Gary also encourage me to be more outgoing. The other mentee in my group is Jonathan, he is also friendly and helpful person.

Mr. Gary Choy once invited me to an agarwood talk. He said that he found agarwood culture really interesting and wanted to share with us. He worked as tour guide to introduce an agarwood museum to me. I think it is nice of him to share his interest with me. Also, he arranged a meeting with me and his former mentee, I got some useful suggestion from that meeting.

Mentor: Dr. Chung Wai Ling, Margaret

M y mentor, Dr Margaret Chung is a very generous and nice person who always puts a smile on her face every time we meet her. No matter how busy she is, she would still arrange some time for our gatherings. Most importantly, our gatherings never only consist of mentees from current year but also mentees from last year or even those who

have graduated for several years. So, even if CUMP 2014 would be ended, I am sure I will be invited to Dr. Chung's house again to join their sharing.

Not only does Dr Chung invite us to regular gatherings, she also invites us to a lot of meaningful events. For example, 322 Regen Marathon and

Carnival, Outstanding Young Persons Annual Gathering and Music concerts, etc. Through joining different varieties of events, I have

gained all round exposure and benefited a lot by meeting other outstanding professionals from different fields. They inspired

me of having the correct attitude when facing my future career path.

The most unforgettable memory is the annual gathering with some outstanding young people. There was a section in which

every awarded member prepared the speech of what activities or

plans they were going to do in the coming future. After listening to their

speech, I truly appreciate their efforts made in contributing to the Hong Kong society. In particular,

one mentioned that, those who are awarded the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection but did not join its

association is a pity, because they will miss a lot of opportunities to make their dreams come true.

During one of the gatherings, some previous mentees who are doctors now

watched a TV show that is about doctors. It is really funny when

they kept pointing out the misleading and wrong medical

procedures and knowledge from the show.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to my mentor Eliza Fan for offering me a variety of chances to

enrich my social life. Eliza’s active engagement in voluntary service in her packed schedule greatly impressed me. For our first meeting, she invited me and my friends to join the kick-off ceremony for a service programme launched by Rotary Club. Eliza introduced her friends to us and we were excited to exchange our experience in voluntary service. After that ceremony, I also got the chance to have an elderly home visit, which gained me more interactions with a different age group.

Apart from inviting me to participate in voluntary service, Eliza gave me advice about how to select a service trip with the better effect on receivers and what kind of internship would benefit me in a long term. Furthermore, in the second meeting, which we attended and enjoyed a youth music concert outdoors, she was kind to tell me that she could provide assistance if I could not find an intern position for this summer. With her strong support and encouragement, I feel more positive and motivated in planning my career pathway.

Thank you CUMP for matching such a nice and generous mentor with me.

I t was an inspiring and meaningful dinner. Our mentor, Gordon had booked us a table in a marvelous hotel for our first meeting.

I was embarrassed as I was late due to the class at school, but Gordon was so understanding and forgave me.

In the meeting, we have discussed what activities we are going time do in this year including CUHK tour and firm visiting.

Not only discussing our year plan for the mentorship programme, Gordon even shared his experience of working in Madagascar. He also talked about his perspective on the accounting industry and told us how should we prepare to be an accountant. Of course, the dinner was delicious too. But Gordon's words were the most memorable thing of the night.

I think the programme is good because I have learnt a lot. For example, my mentor shares her

work experience, some experience about life and what I should do as a university student. This helps me have a more clear view about my future career.

I think Shirley is nice and she suggested some activities to mentees to see whether we want to join. Also, the mentees of Shirley over the years have shared their work experience and their life experience with me. It is great to have so many new friends.

We visited the Jockey Club Museum of climate Change at CUHK last time. We visited that museum because one of the mentees is working there. We learnt a lot about climate change. I think it is a good experience for me to have a look about climate change and some plants and birds at CUHK. After that, we had lunch together. This gave me a chance to listen to other mentees' experience and Shirley's sharing so we can have a deeper understanding with each other.

O n 18 Jan 2014, my mentor Elsie, other mentees and I enjoyed our lunch in "Chi Lin Vegetarian" which is in Diamond Hill. "Chi Lin Vegetarian" is a restaurant which serves customers with excellent vegetable dishes. It was my very first time having a vegetarian meal. The dishes were out of my expectation. They tasted great.

Undoubtedly, we spent some time getting to know each other since it was the first time we met. The conversations were good and comfortable and we did had a great time there. Thanks Elsie for that! After the meal, we spent time visiting the Nan Lian Garden which is built in the Tang Dynasty style. It is a fantastic garden which studded with clusters of bizarre rocks and planted with a lot of old and valuable trees. Walking around the garden, we all found peace. It made us feel like we were in Xanadu. We did not know that place before Elsie took us there. I have never thought for a second that there is such a good place in Hong Kong. What a pity that we forgot to take photos of our own! Anyways, thanks Elsie for exploring Hong Kong with us! Just can't wait for the next gatherings!

O verall the experience is pleasant and the mentees are all very polite. They were young and enthusiastic. Sometimes getting them in a group helped as they could share experience among themselves. During the outing I could speak to them individually and let them flow the questions to me without pressure. I guess the mentor – mentee

relationship is to give them more exposure to people outside home and school, and perhaps expose them to other things beyond study.

It benefits me too keeping contact with the young people, getting better understanding what they think, what they like.

Elsie Hui

M eetings with Iris are interesting as we cover various topics from education to engineering to finance. Iris is very curious about our

views on current affairs and on university education. She would ask for our comments on area she is currently dealing with but she is unfamiliar. For example, as a Private Equity investment manager, she is investigating the prospect of an online-gaming company. She herself has seldom played game, so she does not know how these companies make profits. Therefore, she bought it up and we shared our views on that. As a result, not only will she obtain more ideas but also we will acquire more hand-on experience on current business deals.

Through discussions with her, I am able to understand the differences among mergers and acquisitions, angel investment and private equity. Also I get to know the differences between PE in China and PE in other developed countries. Besides, I share my personal career development path with her and she provides much help in career path selection and preparation.

Mentor: Ms. Ip Miu Yin, Sarah

M s. Ip Miu Yin, Sarah is an experienced Clinical Psychologist. As a Psychology major, I am very glad to have Ms Ip as my mentor this year. Ms. Ip and I had our first gathering in February. She invited me to visit

her office and have lunch with her. Our chat was very inspiring. She has shared with me her views on the field of Clinical Psychology, some current practices in the field and the prospects of Psychology graduates. She gave suggestions on how I could better prepare myself for my future career. Other than that, she gave a book written by her, The Helicopter Parents, which includes her observation on helicopter parents in Hong Kong, and some family cases she has dealt with over the years. This book has no doubt helped me understand more about this parenting style in Hong Kong. All in all, my gathering with Ms. Ip was very fruitful. I am looking forward to learning more from her in our upcoming gatherings.

CHU Shun Ying (Psychology)

It was my great pleasure to meet with my mentor, Ms. Sarah Ip in March, 2014. I was first invited to visit her office where she has assessment as a Clinical Psychologist with her clients. I learnt about essentials of an office for psychological practice such as the appropriate setting and tables for children. Then, we went to a restaurant nearby for lunch. Sarah gave me her book about monster parents as a gift, and we discussed issues related to parents in society nowadays, and her journey in publishing the book. She also told me her path in being a Clinical Psychologist, challenges in her career and interesting cases she encountered. Through the conversation that day, I obtained a clearer picture of work and points of concern of a Clinical Psychologist, and built up a closer relationship with Sarah. I am sure there will be a lot more to learn from Sarah and I am looking forward to out gatherings in the future.

LEUNG Tze Zhen Tina (Psychology)

I appreciate very much the opportunity to meet my two mentees, Sharon Chu and Tina Leung. I was impressed by their commitment in university life, the strain in preparing for their future, and their enthusiasm about the clinical psychology

profession. They gave me a better understanding of the young generation, and of course, the elite and striving ones. I might learn more from them than vice versa! I also felt enjoyable sharing about my work experience with them like friends. I look forward to our coming gatherings!

Chief Executive Officer

PJ Square Limited

Mentor: Mr. Peter Jackson

It was a chilly, piercing day of winter, as I recall, in the first meeting with mentor Peter Jackson.

It was early March and winter seems unwilling to depart too soon.

My fellow mentee, Jessica and I were mixed with emotions. Loaded with a mild sense of anxiety

on one hand, for we were uncertain how it might turn out in our first interaction but filled with

anticipation and excitement on the other, picturing the pleasantness of it.

As we finally reached the office and passed through the threshold Peter embraced us with a warm

welcome, his heartening handshake and his fatherly smile settled all disconcertion. In his homely

furnished office we made ourselves comfortably seated, surrounded by a feeling of serenity and

spend the later hours together and that was how a truly wonderful relationship really began.

Peter's experiences from his early childhood to his journey as an adult enchanted his audiences and

were well perceived by two pairs of eager ears. He is a true cosmopolitan, a man of erudition and

judiciousness. I remember asking Peter what made him a man of such learning, for I was astonished

by his intellect. His response was simple but yet illuminating, he replied "I am just curious". What he

said instantly reminded me one of the many quotes of Albert Einstein and appreciates the wisdom in

it much more, when someone inquired him a similar question he coincidentally replied: I am no genius,

I am just curious.

Peter has taught me many lifelong lessons, the value of intellectual curiosity, the courage to follow one’s

passion and the determination to pull it through. It has been a great opportunity for me to take part in

CUMP, and in coming months, I look forward seeing Peter, shaking his hand, to learn from him and

repay his fatherly smile.

Mentor: Dr. Paul Kan

I n late March, I attended Mr. Paul Kan’s annual Derby Reception as a helper together with other

mentees. On that day, I participated in the pre-event preparation under the guidance of the manager. He taught us how to the arrange seats for guests, how to distribute gifts to them and other matters for special attention in a formal banquet. After the beginning of the luncheon, I was responsible for assisting a doctor in offering health tests to guests. During the whole process, I interacted with many people from different background. Sometimes I needed to translate the testing results from Chinese into English for foreign guests. Indeed that was a challenging task which required the ability to react and communicate with different people

quickly. At first I was a little bit nervous and in a tearing hurry. When I was inputting the guest’s personal information I even misspelled a lady’s name and she was unhappy about it. That made me more nervous. However, the doctor was so kind and patient to me that I could continue to work without being blamed. Mr. Paul Kan was busy greeting guests but he still found time to talk to us and took photos with us. Because of Mr. Paul Kan, I had my first time to be exposed to these detailed work behind such a high-level reception and I felt lucky and excited to be taught by seasoned professionals. I have learnt a lot beyond my expectation and I also know more my own ability. When the reception was near the end, we

mentees were invited to watch the horse racing. That was really an unforgettable experience to me.

In April, I was again invited to a seminar on agarwood identification and appreciation by Mr. Paul Kan in his capacity as a founder of the Institute of Agarwood. The seminar was held in his private Imperial Museum. It was divided into two parts. The first part was a lecture about agarwood and then followed by appreciating different grades of agarwood from various areas. I have never touched agarwood before. Therefore, all of this seemed to be interesting and novel to me. The arduous search process for agarwood was impressed me. Its fragrance made me feel comfortable and relaxed. Apart from learning agarwood, I also viewed

other collections. I marveled at these gorgeous and valuable collections although I knew little about them. I am so interested in agarwood after the seminar.

I thank my mentor Mr. Paul Kan so much for providing me with these opportunities to learn. It widens my knowledge and enriches my life experience. Besides, Mr. Paul Kan himself is also a good example of success. To sum up, I am glad to participate in CUMP and become a mentee of Mr. Paul Kan. This is a precious experience in my university life.

1. Why did you agree to take up external mentees?

As a people manager, I have a lot of opportunities to work with the younger generation. The mentor role for university stu-dents enables me to get in touch with them from different angels. I believe sharing my observation and experience may get them better prepared for their future career.

2. What did you like best/least about the mentoring relationship?

I love to learn from them. Their brought up is totally different from our generation and it is very interesting to learn about their thinking process, doubt and concern. It trains me to be a good listener.

3. In what ways you have contributed to your mentee’s development?

Proactively share my work/ life experience, observation on their communication skills as well as the IG recruitment inter-view. I believe it helps my mentees to reflect and refine their skills and career plan.

4. What challenges you have encountered so far to make this relationship effective?

Think of different type of activities to add more colour to our get together.

5. How can the mentoring relationship be improved?

More chat via different channels In between face – to – face gathering will make us closer.

M r. Anthony Langridge is like a mix of friend and teacher since he always creates a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere when he is sharing his knowledge, experiences and stories of achievement. Moreover, he is a very supportive mentor that he always

encourages us to ask him different questions about our academic, career, life and friends. I feel blessed to have a mentor like Mr. Langridge because he is dedicated to help me figure out where I want to go after graduation and help me establish a positive attitude towards life. Even Mr. Langridge has a tight schedule, he still contacts us actively by monthly meetings and regular emails. For example, even Mr. Langridge had to meet his business partner in early February, he still ask Frankie, his personal assistant, and Lucy, a fresh graduate from our major, to have a lunch meeting with us, in order to let us know more about his job from his personal assistant and the industry from a fresh graduate student’s perspective.

Since I am new to the field, Mr. Langridge is very kind to offer me the summer internship in his firm. As a result, it helps me gain practical work experience and introduce me to potential future work environment. Mr. Langridge also encourages me to consult him during my internship so that he can help me decide whether these meet my career wishes and interest.

We had the last meeting in early April, this time we had prepared a list of questions beforehand to ask Mr. Langridge and he was very patient to answer all of our questions in details. “Once a mentor, always a mentor.” This is what Mr. Langridge told me in the meeting. I truly believe that our relationship will last forever and applying for the CUMP is the best decision I have made in this academic year.

H aving known Angela for nearly 6 months, I think Angela is an easy-going, nice and friendly business leader. In these recent months, Angela and I met twice, she is kind and caring to us. In our conversations, we communicated well and knew that we have some background in common. For example, both of us are interested

in marketing and treat it as a long-term career development area. Both of us prefer working on fast moving consumer goods. As I have some work experience, sometimes, when we talk, we both have resonance on some common pages of topic and ideas. That makes us feel good as a catalyst to our mentorship. On the other hand, regarding mentorship, Angela is a guiding angel to me when I have doubts, wonders and dilemmas on academic development and in the working environment. There are so many philosophies to cope with projects, people and potential problems when you are involved in a company. Angela, as a passionate, experienced and optimistic leader in a multinational cooperation, often shares her own insights and tactics on the issues. Among those philosophies, two golden rules shared by Angela are to love your job and to be optimistic that every obstacle has their ways to break.

Moving away her light halo in her success, she is a confident, modern and charming lady. An impressive thing worth mentioning is that, we use ‘whatsapp’ as a frequent communication tool. She is also open-minded that she can accept our teen thinking and understanding that she know how mostly the post-80s think. She would not judge but appreciate and respect our post-80s’ lifestyle and think there is difference but no relative superiority between two generations. Communication and adaptation are the keys to not only workplace efficiency, but also social and interpersonal harmony between generations. Speaking of lifestyle, Angela leads a healthy one that she loves exercising. That explains her young appearance and her energetic spirit.

Mentor: Mr. Daniel Lee

I have been dreaming of having a mentor who can guide me along the journey from university to work life. As for my career goal, I want to work in the human resources industry after graduation, but it is difficult for me to find someone who has so much experience in this area. And it is even harder to find someone who can spare so much time to help me achieve

my career goal. That's why I feel so lucky to be admitted to the CUHK mentorship programme. To me, CUMP is like a bridge, connecting me with my mentor. Through matching mentees with mentors, holding New Year Gathering, and many other kinds of activities, CUMP provides various opportunities for both mentors and mentees to interact with and learn from each other.

Words cannot express my gratitude towards my mentor, Mr. Daniel Lee. Mr. Lee is a warm-hearted mentor. He welcomes me to ask questions if I have any, through phone, email, and face-to-face conversation. He is always willing to take time from his busy schedule to talk with me. He is also willing to generously share his experience and insights in every gathering.

My mentor and I both agreed that, before every gathering, I could send him a list of questions that I want to ask via email in advance. I remember once I asked him what a good teamwork was in his view. When I met him, my mentor didn't answer this question directly. Instead, he gave me a personality test. That test aims to examine what kind of working style I belong to. I felt a little confused because I didn't see any connection between teamwork and this personality test. But when I finished this test, my mentor then explained to me how teamwork and individual working style were closely related. And I have to admit that so far this is the best answer to teamwork understanding that I have ever heard. More interestingly, my mentor took me to his company's football match in the following gathering. When I was watching the game, my mentor told me that he wanted me to see how team spirit was supposed to work. Through the personality test and football match, I now have a deeper understanding of teamwork. More importantly, I appreciate that my mentor spared so much time to answer my questions.

The topics we discussed about:

1. Comparing working in the human resources industry in Hong Kong, China, and other parts of the world

2. The upcoming trend in the human resources industry

3. The challenges faced by human resources management nowadays

4. Main job areas of human resources management

5. How to gain a better understanding of organizational culture

etc.

Mr. Lee and I sometimes discussed about workplace culture in Hong Kong and in Mainland China. As my mentor also has working experience in Mainland China, he would kindly share his observations with me during gatherings. For example, he told me the alcohol drinking culture in dinner tables among businessmen in Mainland China. What surprised me was that he told me this culture was not that dramatic or terrifying. In my mentor's opinion, people should be more open-minded to different cultures and traditions. More interestingly, he still suggested that if I don't want to get involved in this drinking culture, I should find some excuses for it such as being allergic to alcohol. If I insist on it, people will not encourage me to drink alcohol anymore. I think this tip will be very useful in the future.

LU Mingdan (Psychology)

T his year my 2 mentees, Lucy and Daniel are well prepared before our meeting and very positive during the whole process.

Especially for Lucy, she is very interested to be a professional HR. Before our first meeting, she sent me some pages of questions. During the meeting, if she was not clear about the answers, she would ask follow-up questions. Sometimes I did not have enough time to answer all her questions. I am really happy to have a mentee not just listen to me but also share her point of views openly.

The programme does not just benefit to the mentees but also to myself.

I n late March, I was glad to take a chance to have the first gathering with my dearest mentor, Bernard Li, the senior manager in PwC. As a year-2 student studying Professional Accountancy, I was very green to know the accounting profession. Having no internship experience and technical exposure to real accounting operations, I felt

unfamiliar with the accounting industry. Even, I still don't know how to make the best use of my university life.

CUMP 2014 has offered me a chance to meet the professional in accounting industry. In the gathering, Bernard Li, my dearest mentor, shared about his career life with me and fellow mentee. What is more, in order to give us a clearer direction and facilitate our interaction, he even invited his mentee in the past to join our gathering to share her own experience as a PAC student. Her sharing was very inspiring and gave me some new insights to view my career: I should go beyond my comfort zone and explore myself more for discovering any potentials.

Bernard gave us a brief picture of the accounting industry nowadays and suggested us to equip ourselves in order to succeed in the accounting profession. More importantly, he recommended us to take part in various school activities and actively participate in foreign exchange programme and some internship programme to get fruitful experience and exposure. These would benefit us both in our career and our personal growth. "Cherish every opportunity in front of us, leave no regrets for our future" - this was an essential message that I got from Bernard.

C UHK Mentorship Programme provides me a valuable opportunity and platform to

build up a fruitful relationship with my mentor, Teddy and groupmates. If I need to describe CUMP with one word, I would choose "diversified". Mentors and mentees come from different backgrounds, which makes the programme more vivid and variegated. A fund manager might have a mentee from science, or, a law student could have mentorship with an Engineer. While matching between mentors and mentees is not restricted by their backgrounds, both parties are able to have a wider exposure on different aspects and occupations. Though the programme only last for one year, I am sure the mentorship will be ongoing and sustainable in the future.

I would say the bonding within my group is very strong. Mr. Teddy Li is a very nice and caring mentor with rich experience and a wide network in finance sector. It is very nice of him that he always introduces his friends to me. Through chatting with Teddy and his friends, I gain a deeper insight in banking and finance sector, as well as advices and opinions on my academic path. Another mentee, Nelson, is studying the same major with me, and we were the committee members in the same society as well. That is why the bonding between us are strong. It is more like friendship than mentorship.

We meet at least once a month, because Nelson and I are helping Teddy on a monthly voluntary service. During the service, we put down our work and study, and enjoy the night playing with elderlies. Teddy shows his care and respect to the elderlies. We are lucky to have such a friendly mentor and have so much to learn from him.

My first meeting with Mr. Moore was not as formal as I anticipated, but it was rather relaxed. Managing Director

Potential Dialogue

Mentor: Mr. Peter Nixon

M r. Nixon brought us to Dymocks, the book store, where he introduced us the

business development manager. This has indeed expanded my network because I am deeply interested in publishing sector which I have told Mr. Nixon. I am very grateful for him to introduce the manager to us.

In the 2nd time to meet Mr. Nixon, we had the meeting at the Pacific Coffee in Wan Chai. Mr. Nixon gave us some of his latest products (for the use in seminar) which are some cards where some reasons of why people do not talk are printed on. At the back of each card are the solutions. Mr. Nixon asked us

to pick the reason that is most suitable for each of us and asked us to explain. Later on, he provided us with some solutions of how to deal with situations where we do not want to talk.

Moreover, he taught us the skill of using 'how' and 'why' to keep a conversation going on.

LING Wai Lam (English Studies &

BEd in English Language Education)

W e had a great gathering with Mr. Nixon in February. Mr. Nixon

invited us to have lunch with him in Discovery Bay, where he introduced us his wife and Susan, who is the business development manager of dymocks, Discovery Bay. We started having more conversations related to our future meeting plans and methods of communic a t ion . Thro ugh the conversation, Mr. Nixon told us to be more active in extracting more information and helpful connections from him. Mr. Nixon encouraged us to have discussion with him via email so we could ask him questions or discuss specific problems with him whenever needed.

Deputy General Manager (Human Resources)

Sino Group

Mentor: Ms. Queena Pun

A s the deputy general manager in HR department of Sino Group, my dear mentor, Ms. Pun, was always in a very busy schedule. It is my second year as her mentee. We met twice this year. The first one was on the programme opening ceremony and the second one was an office visit. And of course, before the visit, Ms. Pun treated me a very nice lunch.

The very unforgettable moment was at the beginning of 2013-2014 academic year, when the programme was recruiting new mentees. The officer of CUMP gave me a call and told me that Ms Pun selected me as her mentee again. I felt honored and accepted the offer gladly.

We both show understanding to each other, especially for Ms Pun’s busy schedule and I sincerely appreciate her precious time and generous help. Though we cannot meet face to face frequently, we always have a nice chat through Whatsapp. Ms. Pun always gives me enough support.

This summer, I will go for the summer programme in University of Cambridge, which lasts from 29 Jun to 23 Aug. Then I face the problem of seeking summer intern which may usually takes place in the middle of summer period. I told Ms. Pun about this problem and she quickly referred me to corporate communications department of Sino. I have to say that it is very surprising and fantastic.

Last but not least, what I want to highlight is that Sino Group has a very friendly office atmosphere. I just felt the kindness and respect on my first day to office. All my colleagues, no matter my supervisors or even the department manager, are just very nice and helpful. Sino pays a lot of attention on corporate social responsibility issues and I am in the Sino Green Group, which takes charge of sustainability report and the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index Series. I think Sino is in the frontier in this aspect and believe it is a very good choice for future career. Sincerely, it is not an advertisement. Compared with most financial institutions, Sino has a much better work life balance.

At last, thank to Ms. Pun for letting me have the opportunity to gain a deep understanding about Sino, one of the leading property developers in Hong Kong. And I also feel grateful to CUMP. It is just the platform that can help me for my university life. They, both my mentor and CUMP officers, devoted a lot and I appreciate their help very much.

F lorence has shown me different departments of Philips, the design of the office and some products. It is the first time that i go to a real office. Thank Florence for giving me the chance. I would say that Florence is really friendly. When we asked to visit her office, she agreed immediately. It made me feel warm because she trusted us. Also, she is willing

to share her experience with me and answer my questions about my career. I am looking forward to the following part of this programme.

I really want to give my thanks to my mentor, Mr. Tse Wai Chuen, Tony. It is just so nice to meet him. I know that he has been very busy at work but he is still willing to spare time on me. Uncle Tony is friendly and I feel comfortable to chat with him. Our meeting was inspiring, we have exchanged our views on some interesting issues and I have certainly

learnt a lot from him. Thanks to CUMP, I can have such a friendly mentor. I would keep in touch with my mentor and I look forward to meeting him again in the near future.

D espite how busy Dr. Vuylsteke is, we have managed to meet up twice for lunch so far, during which he had given me different pieces of

advice from different perspectives, and as an inexperienced first year student, I have found these pieces of advice very useful and helpful, for both my first year university life and also early career planning. Asides from these, we also discuss a great range of different things, which make these sessions very enjoyable indeed! I really look forward to our next meeting, and to continue to learn from him!

Mentor: Mr. Michael J. Wellsted

C UMP provides us with a precious opportunity to get acquaintance with some seniors who have succeeded in their career. From talking to our mentor and the sharing of their experience, we could learn how to make our own career planning, what to pay attention to when hunting a job, how to present yourself to others, and how to better transform

the way we think from a student to a working person. Actually, we mainly focus on our studies at university, so we may not be very familiar with our career planning. But CUMP definitely makes it possible for us to think about our career in advance, which better prepares us for our job in the future.

Mr. Wellsted is a very nice person with strong leadership. He is willing to share his stories with me, and is patient to listen to my problems or puzzles. When I asked him some questions about my career planning, he would analyze the problem with me and then give me some advice, from which I could learn a lot. Also, he gave me some suggestions on choosing the industry that I want to work in after graduation. I am really honored that I could have Mr. Wellsted to be my mentor this year.

Mr. Wellsted was also willing to have some mock interviews with me and help me identify me weaknesses. This is one of the unforgettable memories I have in CUMP.

S ebo and I had dinner with Mr Wong at IFC. It was very nice to chat with him. We had covered a wide variety of topics. He had shared some interesting facts of aviation industry and the technical skills required for cabin crew. He also told us the welfare that the cabin crew can enjoy.

Apart from his working experience, he also gave us advice on choosing our career in the future. For example, he told us that the job types are divided into 2 types: generalists and specialists and their features respectively. He also shared with us some qualities needed in business world, like being proactive.

He encouraged us to go out and experience more. We had learnt that the way to integrate in foreign culture is to explore and show respect to it. This is a good piece of advice for my exchange programme.

Mentor: Ms. Lily Wong

I t is really my honour to have Ms. Lily Wong as my mentor in CUHK Mentorship Programme.

Through different activities and lunch gatherings, a fruitful mentor-mentee relationship has been established during the last six months. I believe this relationship – along with my learnings and inspirations – will last forever.

University students nowadays are criticized for being unaware of social affairs. Having Ms. Lily Wong as my mentor is like a channel for me to connect to society. Ms. Wong always shares her experience at work as well as some impression towards university students. From her sharing, not only can I have an insight in the insurance industry, but I am also reminded the appropriate learning attitudes that a university student should bear. These inspirations will always be the guidance for me even when I have entered the society.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Ms. Lily Wong

D uring the lunch gathering, Ms. Lily Wong shared her own experiences delivering

several enlightening points. Firstly, she told us about how she overcame various difficulties and organized a charity football match. It occurred to me that we should keep a clear mind and try to find a way out when facing dilemmas. Besides, she emphasized that the career outlook and opportunities for self improvement should be considered first when making career decisions. It surprised me that she also shared with us her understanding of dating and relationships. According to her, communication between lovers is of

O n 1 Mar 2014 , Ms. Wong invited us to have lunch at the Chinese Restaurant, Hyatt Regency Hong Kong.

We were glad that Ms. Wong had also asked mentees she had last year from other universities so that we could have a better understanding of the way how our mentor had time with mentees. Also, Ms. Wong shared her working experience with us to encourage us to move forward and put ideas into practice.

I learnt a lot from my mentor. He guided me the direction of my future career and shared with me the actual working atmosphere in this field. For example, after five years with one of the Big Four audit firms, a qualified accountant will have a lower salary in most cases when he leaves for a job in a commercial firm. It may be too realistic and frustrating but very useful.

My mentor is very nice. He is detail-minded and caring mentor to help solve my problem and clear my doubts.

T his programme offers us a great opportunity to know real-life people who are already successful in career and get some useful advice from them to plan for our own career path. And we can also build connections with our mentor.

My mentor, Mr. Bernard Wu, is a very kind man. He is like a father who really cares about us and gives us the right advice to our confusion and problems.

Once I asked him a question about whether I should work first or get a master degree after I finish the undergraduate programme. He told a story about himself. At that moment, I felt like he is just like my father. When I had some problems at home, my father always told stories about himself to help me get rid of it. Mr. Wu is eager to share with us the funny stories in life.

ZHUANG Yalin (Risk Management Science)

T his is a valuable experience to have a talk with those with great achievements about perspectives of life. I have a lot to learn from both mentor and my groupmate. My mentor Mr. Wu is always willing to answer our silly questions. On the other hand, my groupmate is very outgoing and engages in many club positions with a large circle of friends.

I don’t feel

any pressure at all when meeting and chatting together. And it is really a coincidence that we found out that we studied in the same secondary school!

Thank you for all the efforts and arrangement of the CUMP as well as all other career-planning activities. We, as students, are very fortunate to have all these to better prepare ourselves. Joining these programmes do enrich me a lot.

M s. Lam Ka Ki is a joy to have around and I was very pleased to be assigned as her mentor. She is always curious and is never afraid to ask questions, a valuable quality for someone in the field of research, especially in Anthropology. When I first met Ka Ki, I was very impressed by her enthusiasm in learning and her willingness

to step out of her comfort zone to try something new. She was always taking the initiative to contact me and despite only having time to meet her three times, it felt like we have done so much together. After every meeting, she would write me a thank-you letter detailing what she has learned from it, another example of her diligence. I also commend her participation in an internship program in Sydney, as it takes great resolve and sense of independence for a young girl to organize an overseas trip all by herself. Ka Ki is a bright young lady and I am very privileged to have a chance to know her, I believe she will accomplish great things and I wish her all the best in her future studies and career.

F irstly, participating in the CUMP is an enjoyable experience for me. As a

university student, paying effort in researching academics and widening personal network as well as one's horizon, should be balanced. The programme offers different learning experiences for me, for instance, joining the annual dinner of the Sunflower Travel Service Ltd. and activities organized by the HKPASEA with Mrs. Young and other professionals. By participating in these activities, my communication skills is improved.

Moreover, the programme encourages me to challenge myself and make improvement. I used to be afraid of making new friends, especially with professionals or experts. Nonetheless, experiences in developing relationship with my mentor, Mrs. Young, encourage me to make new friends and learn from others. With invitations from Mrs. Young, I got to know the staff from her company, other professionals and senior executives, in order to know more about their career and personal development. I learnt to be brave and they are precious chances to widen my social networks.

These experiences cannot be easily gained in classroom learning!

Mrs. Cindy Young is a nice and considerate mentor who is willing to provide guidance to me. When I first met Mrs. Young in the Launching Ceremony of the CUMP, she shook my hands firmly and said with a bright smile, "Nice to meet you. Make it simple, just call me Cindy! It's always happy to make new friends." Therefore, with the warm welcome from Mrs. Young, we started to share our hobbies, interests and experiences with each other and developed our friendship.

In addition, Mrs. Young is willing to give me different chances to learn and widen my personal network. I am pleased to join the annual dinner of her company. It was a big party that night and chatting with young and energetic marketing colleagues was enjoyable. Although Mrs. Young was busy with international and business agents, she spent time to chat with me

and wished to know my feelings towards the party.

Moreover, Mrs. Young is willing to give me guidance in preparing my future career development. She reminded me to participate in different kinds of extra-curricular activities to enrich my life experience and expand my social network. During the visit to Jao-Tsung I Academy with Mrs. Young, I was introduced to different professionals and one of them, Alex Hung from the Rotary Club of Peninsular Sunrise invited me to join the service trips organized by his company. Mrs. Young is a friendly and experienced mentor who always loves to give a helping hand.

The most unforgettable memory is the prompt guidance and help from Mrs. Young. I would participate in a short-term internship programme organized by the Nicholson Museum of the University of Sydney this summer. As it is the first time for me to travel abroad alone, I feel quite nervous and share it with Mrs. Young. Although Mrs. Young was in a business trip when I sought for her guidance, she replied me via email immediately and asked colleagues from her company who was familiar with Australia to provide me assistance. With the help from Mrs. Young and her colleagues, I was able to get more useful information about the country and plan my journey. Mrs. Young really cares about the

needs of mentee and provides guidance for me.

I would never forget the interesting dialogue between Mrs. Young and me during the Jao-Tsung I Academy. After visiting the historical buildings and museums, Mrs. Young and I were going to have a special lunch in Gingko House. I asked Mrs. Young to take photo with me. "Mrs. Young, is it okay to take a photo here? It's nice!" I suggested. Mrs. Young replied, "Absolutely yes!". Then, Mrs. Young took my smart phone immediately and said, "Stand in front of the door, it's beautiful." I suddenly realized I misled Mrs. Young and said, "Sorry, Mrs. Young. I mean we take a photo together!" Both of us burst into laughter and took a photo together! How a nice and friendly professional executive Mrs. Young is!
