sun dog or sundog , scientific name parhelion (plural parhelia ) from reek (parlion) , meaning /beside the sun/0 from (para) , meaning /beside/, and (helios) ,meaning /sun/, also called a mock sun 1 2 or a phantom sun ,1%2 is an atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the

    sun .132

Sundogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, %% distant and atthe same distance above the hori4on as the sun, and in ice halos. 5hey can be seen any6here inthe 6orld during any season, but they are not al6ays obvious or bright. Sundogs are best seenand are most conspicuous 6hen the sun is lo6.

    Formation and characteristics

Sundogs are commonly made by the refraction of light from plate7shaped he8agonal ice crystalsin high and cold cirrus clouds or, during very cold 6eather, these ice crystals are called diamonddust , and drift in the air at lo6 levels. 5hese crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passingthrough them 6ith a minimum deflection of %% . 9f the crystals are randomly oriented, acomplete ring around the sun is seen a halo. ;ut often, as the crystals sink through the air, they become vertically aligned, so sunlight is refracted hori4ontally in this case, sundogs areseen.

s the sun rises higher, the rays passing through the crystals are increasingly ske6ed from thehori4ontal plane. 5heir angle of deviation increases, and the sundogs move further from the sun.1

What ARE Sundogs?Sundogs are a natural phenomenon

The Earth receives 99% of its energy from the Sun. The Suns energy is Earthsprimary life source and Sundogs are a special natural phenomenon that re ects the

Suns powerful energy. Shown in the image a ove! Sundogs occur when specialcircumstances e"ist etween the crystals in clouds and the direction of the Sun. Weencourage student leaders to e"pand their imaginations and a ilities to re ect theimage and energy of the Sun #ust as Sundogs do.

Sundogs typically form 6hen a number of conditions are filled. 5he sun is typically close to thehori4on at sunset or sunrise and there is a thin layer of small he8agonal ice crystals in the

stratosphere 6ithin cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. arious other phenomena are associated 6ithsundogs, but the typical sundogs form on a halo that forms as a result of light refracting throughthe ice crystals high in the stratosphere. 5he halo itself forms at about %% degrees from the sunand the sundogs 6ill appear as a bright circular patch on the halo that is parallel to the hori4on oneither side of the sun simultaneously. Sometimes, there 6ill be a sundog above the sun as 6ell.5here may also be a tangential arc on the top portion of the halo that curves up6ard and a6ayfrom the halo, as if to form the beginning of a second halo above the one around the sun. 5he suntypically has to be lo6er than > degrees from the hori4on for conditions to be right for theformation of sundogs through high flo6n ice crystals.

Sundogs look like bright patches of light, sometimes rivaling the sun in brightness and

sometimes they can be confused 6ith comets, especially 6hen an elongated parhelion (tail) isassociated 6ith them. s comet tails point a6ay from the sun, an observation of a parhelion canreasonably be confused for a comet. =omets ho6ever, can be on any inclination. *arhelions areal6ays parallel to the hori4on along 6ith the line of the sundogs and sun. 5hey may or may notcome in pairs. 5his depends on atmosphereic conditions 6hich may not be uniform. Sometimes, one may notice slight color separation 6ith the reddish part of a halo and sundog closest to thesun and the bluish part further a6ay. =olour separation occurs only 6ith refracted sundogs.Sometimes, sundogs and halo 6ill be all 6hite and this is due to the light reflecting off the sno6crystals instead of refracting through them. 9n the case of a comple8 display 6here there are arcsabove, tails on either side as 6ell as the sundogs themselves, a mi8ture of various crystals 6ithdifferent alignments produces these phenomena at the same time. 5here are t6o basic

configurations that 6ill scatter sunlight, or moon light into halos and sundogs 6ith tails andcrosses.

When sunlight passes through the sides of the flat he8agonal crystal, both the angle of the sun?srays and the orientation of the crystals affects the shape and color of the sundogs. #isaligned or6obbling crystals produce colorful and elongated sundogs, 6hile light passing through thecrystal in non7optimal deviation angles up to @' produces the /tail/ of the sundog stretchinga6ay from the sun.
