urrealism - 20th century avant-garde art movement that originated in the nihilistic ideas of the Dadaist and French literary figures, especially those of its founder, French writer André Breton (1896-1966). Influenced by the theories of the pioneer of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (German, 1856-1939), the images found in surrealist works are as confusing and startling as those of dreams. Surrealist works can have a realistic, though irrational style, precisely describing dreamlike fantasies.

Guidelines for Task 1 Assignments:
Upon completion of the list, groups may continue to work together to take photographs.
All submitted artwork must be created individually using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS3.
Task 1 Procedures

Using the lyric search engines provided under “Resources,” the groups will develop a list of 15 lines from songs that have potential as inspiration for Surrealist art.The List should include Artist, title of song, and lyric, and each individual will create their own sub list of potential imagery
For example: The Beastie Boys – Whatcha Want: “I think I’m losin’ my mind this time - this time, I’m losin’ my mind.”
Potential imagery: A head, brain exposed, clocks in background.
Each student will select 2 songs from the group list to work on independantly. Multiple people may choose to work on the same song.

Create 2 “freewrites;” one about a dream and the other about a nightmare
Be very descriptive! Use adjectives and adverbs that paint a picture of what you as the writer “see.”
Select the dream or nightmare piece that is the most mentally vivid
Use this for inspiration in creating a digitally edited photograph that is derived from the imagery you used
Guidelines for Task 2 Assignment:You will turn in 2 drafts – one dream and one nightmare.Your work must be original, using YOUR photographs.All submitted artwork must be created individually using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS3.Each Student will turn in 1 completed assignment.

To wrap up our stint into Surrealism, we will be going on a field trip to the Cincinnati Art Museum to experience “Surrealism and
Beyond: In the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.” The Cincinnati Art Museum is the only art museum in the United States
that will have the honor of holding this exhibit.
