Sustainability/Resilience of Freshwater Ecosystems? Climate Change is Here … Stationarity is Dead! There are no “reference” conditions … Baselines are shifting! Ecosystems are dynamic and always changing (bummer!) Human activities have kept ecosystems in disequilibrium for ages, but especially since Industrial Revolution Despite this, ecosystem states can be bounded by a “natural range of variability” (???) The world is changing … ever more rapidly Human consumption of fresh water is growing! Aquatic ecosystems are greatly altered and biodiversity is imperiled! … but we can’t predict the future, especially at a speciNic locality! What to do?
