SV. PETAR U ŠUMI Naselje Sv. Petar u Šumi, danas općina istoga ime-na, dobilo je ime po benediktinskom samostanu koji se u latinskim dokumentima zove Monaste-rium Sancti Petri in Sylvis – Samostan Sv. Petra u Šumama. Samostan se prvi put u dokumtima spominje 1174. s nejasnom napomenom da po-stoji već pedeset godina, ali sigurno je samostan postojao i prije 1134. Legenda govori da je u Sv. Petru u Šumi boravio mađarski kralj Salomon nakon što je u dinastičkim borbama zbačen s prijestolja. Kasnije je prešao u samostan Sv. Miho-vila na Brijegu, kod Pule, gdje je umro 1089.

Od samostanske knjižnice ostala je sačuvana je-dna latinska rukopisna knjiga, pisana karolinom, krajem XI. ili početkom XII. st. Iz istog je vremena i fragmenat s uklesanim ćiriličkim i glagoljičkim slovima – što znači sa su se supetarski benedik-tinci služili svima trima našim pismima. Benedik-tinci su bili prvi zapadnoeuropski redovnici, koji su obnovili zapušteno gospodarstvo, kulturnu djelatnost, brinući se i za dušu i za tijelo, prema geslu kojega su se redovnici držali : Moli i radi! Ora et labora!

Za razliku od drugih istarskih mjesta i gradova gdje se naselje oblikuje na brdu: na vrhuncu je crkva a uz crkvu i uz rubove brda nižu se kuće, u Sv. Petru u Šumi nije bilo ni oko crkve ni oko samostana kuća, a to zato da bi se sačuva mir i sabranost re-dovnika. Supetarci su živjeli u udaljenijim selima obrađujući polja i vinograde. Nad Dragom, do XV. stoljeća postojao je utvrđeni kaštel koji se u spo-menicima zove Ad Vicinatum (možda Vižinada?). Od kaštela nije ostalo ništa, osim toponima Sv. Toma, po crkvi koje više nema.

Kad je zamrlo zanimanje za benediktinski red, kad je samostan opustio, car Fridrih III. samostan je predao pavlinima, koji su već imali jedan samo-stan u Istri, na otoku u Čepićkom jezeru. Pavlini su nastavili kulturnu, privrednu i društvenu dje-

PETAR U ŠUMI The village of Sveti Petar u Šumi, presently hol-ding the status of Municipality, was named after the Benedictine monastery mentioned in Latin documents under the name Monasterium Sancti Petri in Sylvis – the Monastery of Saint Peter in the Woods. The Monastery was first recorded in documents in 1174 but the record is accompanied by the annotation saying that the Monastery had stood there for 50 years. It is quite certain that the Monastery existed even before 1134. The legend says that the Hungarian King Solomon spent some time at Sveti Petar u Šumi after losing the throne in dynastic fights. Later he moved on to the Monastery of Saint Michael in Pula where he died in 1089.

Only one book from the Monastery library remai-ned preserved. It is a Latin manuscript written in Caroline script towards the end of the 11th or be-ginning of the 12th century. A fragment inscribed with Cyrillic and Glagolitic letters dates back into the same period – proving that the Benedictine monks at Sveti Petar used all three local alpha-bets. The Benedictines were the first Western European monks, they contributed greatly to the restoration of economy and cultural activities, providing for both body and soul in accordance with the motto they strictly adhered to: Pray and work! Ora et labora!

Unlike other Istrian villages and towns, which were formed on hills having the church on top and houses set along the church and the edges of the hill, at Sveti Petar there were no houses around the church or the monastery in order to ensure serenity and composure of the monks. The inhabitants of Sveti Petar lived in nearby villages working their fields and vineyards. Overlooking the Draga Valley there stood until the 15th cen-tury a fortified castle, mentioned in the monu-ments as Ad Vicinatum (maybe today’s Vižinada). Nothing remains of the castle except for the place

latnost svojih prethodnika te su samostan obno-vili, a na jedinstveni su način oblikovali klaustar, natkriveni prostor oko cisterne: nove renesansne stupove postavili su u podnožju a stare romaničke stupiće s arkadama premjestili su na kat te do-bili šetnicu u prizemlju i na katu. Crkva je bila tada obnovljena u gotičkom stilu. U tragičnom Uskočkom ratu, 1616. samostan je paljen i rušen, a obnova je započela sredinom XVII. stoljeća. Od toga vremena i novo lice samostana i crkve. Crkva Sv. Petra i Pavla dobila je lice kakvo imaju crkve u Hrvatskom zagorju (Lepoglava, Remete) ili Au-striji. Za slike se brinuo pavlinski slikar Leopold Keckheisen, za kipove u crkvi i na pročelju Pavao Riedl, obojica braća laici koji su na najljepši način ukrasili crkvu. Neki je pavlinski slikar naslikao i kopiju znamenite slike Majka Božje Čenstohovske, zaštitnice Poljske, za koju je pobožna legenda go-vorila da ju je naslikao Sv. Luka. Ta je slika 1721. cijeli božićni tjedan ronila suze, što je privuklo velik broj znatiželjnika a zatim i hodočasnika te je proširen trg ispred crkve u Sv. Petra u Šumi. Bočni zidovi dviju kapela u XVIII. st. obloženi su prekrasnim kožnim tapetama. Kad je car Josip II. u austrijskim zemljama 1783. ukinuo brojne crkve-ne redove, ukinuo je i pavlinski red, jer da se ne bave ni karitativnim ni školskim radom (a što nije bila istina!). Ista se odredba provela u Hrvatskoj 1786. Redovnici su morali napustiti samostan koji je postao državno dobro. Srećom – pavlinska je crkva postala župnom crkvom i sačuvala je svoju ljepotu do danas. Pavlini su nakon mnogo godina preuzeli župu 1993. i danas se brinu za duhovni život stanovnika Sv. Petra u Šumi.

Stara župna crkva Sv. Roka tada je postala gro-bljanska crkva.

Iz Sv. Petra u Šumi potječe znameniti zagrebački biskup Šimun Bratulić (1550-1613), general pa-vlinskoga reda, borac protiv Turaka i heretika. Po-mogao je da u Zagreb dođu isusovci i otvore svoju gimnaziju (1606.), a zatim i knjižnicu. Njihova

name Sveti Toma (Saint Thomas) after a church that also no longer exists.

When the interest in the Benedictine Order was lost, Emperor Frederick III consigned the Mona-stery to the Paulines who already had another monastery in Istria, on the island in the Lake of Čepić. The Paulines continued the cultural, eco-nomical and social activities of their predecessors and restored the monastery. The cloister (the co-vered space around the cistern) was modelled in a very particular way: new Renaissance columns were placed on the ground while the older Roma-nesque columns with arcades were moved to the first floor, thus shaping a corridor on both floors. The church was later restored in Gothic style. During the tragic Uskok War the Monastery was burnt down and destroyed in 1616. The restora-tion began in the middle of the 17th century and gave a wholly new appearance to the monastery and the church. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul thus shares the appearance with the chur-ches of Hrvatsko zagorje (Lepoglava, Remete) in northern Croatia or Austria. The paintings are by the painter Leopold Keckheisen, sculptures in the church and on the façade by Pavao Riedl, both Pauline lay brethren, who decorated the church in the most beautiful way.

A Pauline painter made a copy of the well-known painting of Madonna of Czestochowa, Protector of Poland, which was, according to a pious legend, painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. At Christmas 1721 the painting shed tears for a week, which attracted a great number of people, first those cu-rious and then so many pilgrims that the square in front of the church had to be extended. Lateral walls of the two chapels were lined with leather wallcovering in the 18th century.

When Emperor Joseph II suppressed many church orders in 1783 throughout the Austrian coun-tries, he also suppressed the Pauline Order on the pretence that the Paulines were not involved in

je knjižnica temelj Nacionalnoj i Sveučilišnoj knjižnici u Zagrebu. U XIX. st. Josip Bratulić za-pisao je nekoliko narodnih pjesama koje su obja-vljene u časopisu „Kolo“ u Zagrebu 1843. koji je uređivao Stanko Vraz. Za školovanja u Zagrebu družio se s Dr. Antom Starčevićem, hrvatskim političarem i književnikom, koji je osnovao zna-menitu Hrvatsku stranku prava. Veliko zasluge za svoju župu i vjerni puk ima Liberat Sloković, koji je bio supetarski župnik skoro pola stoljeća. Među znamenitim Supetarcima treba spomenuti Josipa Turčinovića, teologa, sveučilišnoga profesora, utemeljitelja i direktora „Kršćanske sadašnjosti“, zaslužnoga kulturnoga radnika. Njegov portret u bronci, djelo akademskoga kipara Ante Starčevića, krasi prostor ispred župne crkve („Plac“). Grob mu se nalazi na mjesnom groblju. Grobni spomenik – uska vrata kojima se ulazi u nebesko kraljev-stvo, djelo je Branka Fučića zaslužnoga kulturolo-ga i znanstvenika.

Osnovna škola u Sv. Petru u Šumi otvorena je 1857. Hrvatska čitaonica 1889.

Za vrijeme talijanske okupacije Istre, u Sv. Petru u Šumi otvorena je sušionica duhana, gdje su, u vrijeme teške svjetske krize, mnoge radnice dobi-le posao. Sadnja, sušenje i obrada duhana presta-la je 1955. godine.

Godine 1964. otvorena je u napuštenoj sušioni duhana pogon za uzgoj pilića i purana, a za-tim 1967. klaonica. Devet godina nakon toga izgrađeni su moderni pogoni za mesnu indu-striju „Puris“ koja danas uspješno posluje i svoje proizvode plasira u zemlji i u inozemstvu.

Sveti Petar na raskrsnici je putova koji vode iz Pa-zina, Žminja i Kanfanara prema Kringi i Tinjanu, to jest prema moru. U mjestu nekoliko je obitelji koje se bave seoskim turizmom, a među najpoznatijima je obitelj Franjul koja drži restoran „Pod čeripnjom“ kamo rado dolaze turisti zbog ugodnoga ambijen-ta i zbog ukusne hrane i dobre podvorbe.

charitable and educational work (which was not true!). The order was implemented in Croatia in 1786 and the monks had to abandon their mona-stery which became state property. Fortunately, the Pauline church acquired the status of parish church and preserved its beauty till the present day. The Paulines returned after many years and took over the parish in 1993. Today they are invol-ved in the spiritual life of the inhabitants of Sveti Petar u Šumi.

The old parish church of St. Rochus became the cemetery church.

Sveti Petar u Šumi is the birth place of the emi-nent Bishop of Zagreb, Šimun Bratulić (1550-1613), General of the Pauline Order, zealous in fight against the Turks and the heretics. He as-sisted in the arrival of the Jesuits to Zagreb and the opening of their grammar school (1606) and library. The library is the foundation of the today’s National and University Library in Zagreb.

In the 19th century Josip Bratulić recorded some folk songs which were published in 1843 in the magazine “Kolo” edited by Stanko Vraz in Zagreb. During his education, Bratulić became friends with Anto Starčević, Croatian politician and wri-ter who founded the renowned Croatian Party of Rights.

Liberat Sloković, the parish priest for almost half a century, has greatly indebted his parish and his faithful parishioners.

Another renowned man from Sveti Petar is Jo-sip Turčinović, theologian, university professor, founder and manager of “Kršćanska sadašnjost”, a deserving cultural worker. His portrait in bron-ze, work of the sculptor Ante Starčević, stands in front of the parish church (at the “Plac”). His was buried at the local graveyard and his headstone – narrow gate leading into the Kingdom of Heaven – is the work of Branko Fučić, another deserving culturologist and scientist.

Oni koji su prvi put došli u Sv. Petar u Šumi, nisu se razočarali. Došli su ponovo. Supetarci su ih prvi, i svaki drugi i treći, svaki put dočekali kao dobri prijatelji i domaćini.

The elementary school at Sveti Petar was opened in 1857 and the Croatian Reading Room in 1889.

A tobacco curing barn was opened during the Ita-lian occupation of Istria and many women found work there during the world crisis. Plantation, cu-ring and processing of tobacco was discontinued in 1955.

Chicken and turkey farming factory was opened in the abandoned curing barn in 1964 and a slau-ghterhouse in 1967. Nine years after that Puris opened its new meat processing plants. Since then, Puris has been a greatly successful company placing its product on the domestic and world-wide market.

Sveti Petar is situated at the crossing of roads whi-ch lead from Pazin, Žminj and Kanfanar towards Kringa and Tinjan, towards the sea. Some families have been engaged in rural tourism, the most famous being the Franjul family who own the restaurant “Pod čripnjon” – a place that attracts tourist with its warm ambiance, exquisite food and excellent service.

Those who visited Sveti Petar for the first time did not leave disappointed. They came again. The people of Sveti Petar are generous and friendly hosts to their guests and welcome them warmly the first and second and every other time they come.

do usnica, druge tri pojavile su se pod okom do nosnica. Vidjevši to čudo pavlini su se bili strašno prestrašili. Nakon zvonjave silno mnoštvo uputilo se u crkvu gledati suzama pokriveno lice na slici. Na novu godinu 1. siječnja 1722. god. pred pavli-nima i mnoštvom vjernika prvi viditelj čuda otac Pavao Subski misnim je rupčićem otro kaplje s Ma-rijina lica. Od tada pa sve do odlaska pavlina iz Sv. Petra u Šumi 1783. godine mnoštvo ljudi iz svih dijelova tadašnjih hrvatskih zemalja hodočastilo je slici čudesne Majke Božje Čenstohovske, a mno-gi su pravili zavjete ponajviše u bolestima.

Sve je to zapisano u biskupskom arhivu u Poreču, među zapisima o obilasku župa po porečkom biskupu Gašparu Nigrisu koji je vjerodostojno prepisao nekoliko stranica iz knjige spomenice supetarskih pavlina.

Samostanski vikar zapisao je sljedeća uslišanja:

* 26. kolovoza 1722. nakon što su se žena pa-zinskog upravitelja N. Diminića zavjetovala Čenstohovskoj gospi umirući sin je čudesno ozdravio. U znak zahvale ona je ona je 3.01. 1723. poslala tabelu sa slikama urezanim u srebro.

* 02. Listopada 1722. Čudesno je ozdravio gologorički župnik Petar Kruzila koji je pri padu sa konja posve oglušio. Nakon zavjeta Supetarskoj gospi i ozdravljenja svima je razglasio da je ozdra-vio, a da prije nije vjerovao u ozdravljenje.

* Također tijekom 1723 čudesno su ozdravili Žminjac Ivan Rovis i ugledni kapetan Barbana An-tun Franković koji je u znak zahvale za sliku Gospe dao u Veneciji izraditi lijepi okvir.

* Ugledni seljak Grubiša Sikula iz Jasenovice kod Fuškulina ozdravio je nakon što je izrekao svoj za-vjet riječima: “Pomozi mi Djevice Marijo koja si u crkvi Sv. Petra krvavim suzama plakala”.

* Nakon čudesnog ozdravljenja ugledni pazinski muž darovao je 12 velikih svijeća za oltare crkve Sv. Petra.

placed on the High Altar. One teardrop had come down from the centre of the forehead to touch the lips, three other appeared under the eye to reach the nostril. Having seen the miracle the Pauline Fathers got frightened. After the bell toll a great mass of people made way to church to admire the tear covered face on the picture. On New Year’s Day, 1st January 1722, Father Pavao Subski, the first witness to the miracle, wiped the tears away of Mary’s face with a scented cloth in front of the Pauline Fathers and numerous believers. From that point till the Father’s leaving Sv. Petar u Šumi in 1783 many people from all over Croatian lands of that time made pilgrimage to the Holy Image of Our Lady Czestochowa, of whom many vowed in cases of illness.

The complete account of it is taken down at the diocesan archive at Poreč among the annotations on the visits to the parishes of the Bishop of Poreč, Gašpar Nigris. He made authentic transcription of certain pages from the Chronicle of Pauline Fa-thers of Sveti Petar u Šumi.

The Monastery Vicar wrote down the following cases of granted prayers:

* On 26 August 1722, after the wife of Mr.N.Diminić, the administrator of Pazin, had vowed to Our Lady of Czestochowa, her dying son miraculously got better. As a sign of gratitude she sent a tablet with pictures carved in silver on 3 January 1723.

* On 02 October 1722 the parson of Gologori-ca, Petar Kruzila, miraculously got healed after having suffered a horse fall that had made him totally deaf. After giving vow to Our Lady of Sve-ti Petar u Šumi and getting cured, he spread the news of his recovery stating that he himself had not believed such to be possible.

* Moreover, during the year of 1723 Ivan Rovis, an inhabitant of Žminj, and Antun Franković, a distinguished Captain of Barban, were granted

* Administrator pazinske grofovije Antun Bartol Bono Aminis darovao je čudotvornoj Supetarskoj Gospi nožicu od srebra u znak zahvale za ozdra-vljenje svoje djevojčice koja se rodila s iskrivlje-nom nogom, a po zagovoru Gospe noga joj se potpuno izravnala.

* Čudesno su ozdravile Mateja Bataja iz Kanfa-nara 6. 10. 1937., te Lucija Krpčić koja je ozdra-vila 1738. a već je bila na umoru. Godine došla je ispuniti zavjet Majci Božjoj supetarskoj i Justina Vozila iz Plomina koja je prije zavjetovanja bila sva zgrbljena i nije se mogla micati.

Na glavnom oltaru crkve Sv. Petra i Pavla i da-nas Supetarce čuva i štiti čudesna Majka Božja

Čenstohovska koja je po izjavama i službenim zabilješkama brojnih svjedoka na Badnjak daleke 1721. plakala, a kasnije kroz zavjete u njeno ime mnoge čudesno ozdravila.

* A respected peasant from Jasenovica near Fiškulin named Grubiša Sikula got healed after having vowed the following: ‘’ Help me, Virgin Mary, who shed tears of blood in the church of St. Peter and St. Paul!’’

* A nobleman from Pazin donated 12 big candles for the altars of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul after being miraculously cured.

* The administrator of the Pazin County, Antun Bartol Bono Amis, bestowed the miraculous Our Lady of Sveti Petar u Šumi a little silver foot showing gratitude for the healing of his little daughter born with a contorted foot, completely straightened after her Lady had given vows.

* Mateja Bataja from Kanfanar was healed on 6 October 1737, as well as Lucija Krpčić,in1738, who was already on her deathbed. The same year Justina Vozila from from Plomin arrived at Sveti Petar in order to make vows to Our Lady of Sveti Petar u Šumi, she had been all distorted and una-ble to move beforehand.

At the High Altar of church of St. Peter and St. Paul there is the prodigious Madonna Czestochowa, the one that according to the official statements and annotations of many witnesses present on Holy mass on Christmas Eve in 1721, shed tears and later cured many through vows addressed to her name.

ZNAMENITI SUPETARCI NEKAD I DANASŠimun Bratulić- (1550- 1611), rođen u najsta-rijem supetarskom selu Glavici. Studij filozofije i teologije završio u Rimu. Bio je General pavlin-skog reda, od 1591 stolovao u Lepoglavi. Isticao se obnovom pavlinskih samostana, prosvjećivao je narod i organizirao školstvo. Volio je miran život, ali i ratnički poklič, te se je isticao u borba-ma sa Turcima, trgnuvši mač hrabro je jurio protiv neprijatelja moleći istovremeno krunicu Gospi. Kralj ga je 1598. imenovao srijemskim biskupom, a 1603. god. zagrebačkim. Proširio je sjemenište i omogućio Isusovcima da osnuju gimnaziju 1607. koja je bila preteča Zagrebačkog sveučilišta i Sveučilišne knjižnice.

Josip Bratulić (1818. - 1894.), svećenik i kul-turni radnik. Školovao se u Zagrebu za vrijeme ilirskog pokreta, te je prijateljevao sa dr. Antom Starčevićem. Objavio je u Vrazovom “kolu” neko-liko hrvatskih narodnih pjesama. Kao župnik u Vrhu osnovao je stipendiju za pomoć školskoj djeci.

Liberat Sloković- narodnjak i supetarski župnik, dugogodišnji predsjednik Hrvatske čitaonice. U Sv. Petru je bio župnik od 1893. do 1940. godine.

Dr. Josip Turčinović- (Sv. Petar, 1933. – Zagreb 1990.) svećenik, teolog, nakladnik. Teotogiju i sla-vistiku studirao u Zagrebu. Bio je profesor u Pazinu i Zagrebu. Pročelnik katedre ekumenske teologije u Zagrebu. Osnivač i pročelnik katedre za teološku kulturu laika pri KBF 1968. Suosnivač i glavni taj-nik teološkog društva Kršćanska sadašnjost 1977. Urednik i inicijator časopisa Svesci, Kana, Ansa, Služba riječi. Zamislio i uređivao sve biblioteke KS. Režirao nekoliko dokumentarnih filmova: Katolička crkva u Hrvata 1971. i Zdravo djevice 1971. Njegova najznačajnija knjiga je Katolička crkva u južnoslavenskih zemalja 1973.

General of the Pauline Order, kept court in Lepo-glava from 1591. Prominent for the reconstruction of Pauline Monasteries, had an enlightening role among his people and organized the educatio-nal system as well. While he praised a quiet and peaceful life, he also zealously took part in battles against the Turks, having pulled out the sword, he bravely attacked the enemy praying the rosary to Virgin Mary at the same time. In 1598 the King named him diocesan of Srijem, later in 1603 the diocesan of Zagreb. He expanded the seminary and enabled the Jesuits to found grammar school in 1607, making it the forerunner of today’s Za-greb University.

Josip Bratulić (1818 - 1894), a priest and cultural worker. Having attended school in Zagreb during the Illyrian Movement he made friendship with Anto Starčević .Some of his folk songs were pu-blished in the magazine ‘’Kolo’’ edited by Vraz. During his priesthood in Vrh he established a scholarship system to help pupils and students.

Liberat Sloković- a populist and parish priest, from 1893 till 1940, long-standing chairman of Croatian Reading Room.

Dr. Josip Turčinović (Sv. Petar 1933 – Zagreb 1990) a priest, theologian, publisher. He studied theolo-gy and Slavic studies in Zagreb, worked as teacher in Pazin and Zagreb. In his lifetime he was head of Department of ecumenical theology in Zagreb, founder and head of Department of Theological culture of laymen at KBF in 1968, cofounder and head secretary of theological society ‘’Kršćanska sadašnjost’’ in 1977. He also edited and initiated the publication of magazines ‘’Svesci’’, ‘’Kana’’, ‘’Ansa’’, ‘’Služba riječi’’, was the creative spirit of all editions of KS. He also directed a few documenta-ries: Catholic Church in Croatia in 1971, and Hail Mary in 1971. His most important book is ‘’Catho-lic church in South-Slavic countries’’ in 1973.

KULTURNE ZNAMENITOSTI SV. PETRA U ŠUMI

CRKVA SV. PETRA I PAVLAPejzažom i općinom dominira crkva sv. Petra i Pav-la koja je dovršena i posvećena 1755. god. Crkva je pravokutna građevina sa po dvije kapele na duljim stranama. Ima čvrste profilirane nosače s tankim vijencima, kvadratični kor i izduženo svetište. Na-tkrivena je bačvastokrižnim svodom. Nad bočnim su kapelama empore za redovnike. Mnoštvo prozora (iza empora, iza oltara bočnih kapela i na pjevalištu) omogućuje barokni lom svjetlosti čime se povećava dinamičnost prostora. Crkva posjeduje kvalitetan, dobro očuvan kasnobarokni inventar. Svi su oltari rezbareni u drvetu i djelo su Pavla Riedla. U sredini je svakog oltara velika pala uokvirena drvenim, mramoriziranim stupovima i pilastrima, a na atici je manja slika. Na glavnom oltaru, iz 1755. impresivni su likovi apostola, a bočni su oltari posvećeni “Ružarici”(1759), “Sv. Križu” (1763), “Nevinoj dječici” (1766), i Sv. Pavlu pustinjaku (1777). Oltarne su pale lijepo djelo ka-snog baroka, bez naglih prijelaza svjetla u tamu, a rad su pavlina Leopolda Keckheisena. Prekrasne orgulje rad I.J. Eisla iz 1770. god. smještene su u Riedlov okvir. Raritet su krasne barokne kožne, pozlaćene zidne tapete(venecijanski rad) cvjet-nih motiva, kojima su bočne kapele obložene od podnožja do vijenca. Utjecaj kasnog baroka vidi se u unutrašnjosti crkve, a još očitije na pročelju. Usko, visoko pročelje crkve ( 9x 17,5 m) , što dje-luje još uzduženije zbog velikog zvonika(33,5 m), suprostavlja se horizontalama dvokatnih samo-stanskih krila. Simetrično organizirano pročelje u sredini kontinuirano raste( portal, prozor, niša s kipom), a na užim bočnim stranama vijencima je rasčlanjeno u dvije etaže. Na svakoj plohi, uokvi-renoj pilastrima i vijencima, još je po jedna niša s kamenim kipom. Radio ih je također Pavao Riedl.

CULTURAL MONUMENTS IN SVE-TI PETAR U ŠUMI

THE CHURCH OF ST.PETER AND ST.PAULThe church of St. Peter and St. Paul dominates over the landscape and the Municipality. Its con-struction ended in 1755, the same year when it was consecrated. The church is of a rectangular shape with two chapels along its longer sides. It has solid supports with thin coronas, square-shaped choir stalls, the elongated shrine, and has a barrel-cross shaped vaulted ceiling. Above the lateral chapels there are galleries for the monks. The baroque light refraction is obtained by a large number of windows (behind the galleries, behind the altars of the side chapels, and on the choir) making the area more dynamic at the same time. The church has a late baroque inventory, well conserved and of finest quality. All the altars are carved in wood, the work of Paolo Riedl. Each altar has in its centre a palla framed by wooden, marbled pillars and pilasters, whereas at the gable there is a smaller painting. The High altar, completed in 1755, bears impressive sculptures of apostles while the lateral altars are consecrated to ‘’Rosary’’ (1759), ‘’St. Cross’’ (1763), ‘’Innocent Children’’ (1766), and to St. Paul the Hermit. The altar pallas represent beautiful example of late baroque, work of Pauline Leopold Keckheisen, without sharp transition from light to shade. The magnificent organ is work of I.J. Eisl from 1770 placed in the Riedl’s frame. The marvellous baro-que, gold-plated leather wallpapers (of Venetian provenience) of flowery motif, which line the side chapels from foot up to corona, are pure rarity. The late baroque influence can be seen in the church interior, but is most prominent on the façade whi-ch is narrow, high (9x 17,5 m), looking even more narrow due to the high bell-tower (33,5 m), and it opposes the horizontal two-storey seminary wings. PAVLINSKI SAMOSTANSamostanske zgrade zidane su različitim razdo-bljima i drukčijeg su oblika. Uz južni zid crkve sagrađen je klaustar u drugoj polovici XV st., dijelom od materijala sa starijeg, romaničkog benediktinskoga zdanja. Vidljivo je zanimljivo miješanje stilova jedinstveno u Europi : u pri-zemlju su široke renesansne arkade, a na katu romanički detalji. Usred klaustra je grlo bunara velike cisterne. Talijanski arheolog C. De France-schi tvrdi da je samostan pregrađen 1474. g. u jeku renesanse i da su tada elementi stare lođe benediktinskog klaustra sa stupićima umetnuti na prvi kat. Klaustar je dograđen i proširen 1731. god. nizom prostorija baroknih svodova. Vodora-vna krila samostana i usko, visoko pročelje crkve sažimaju razasuti prostor trga te su mu vizualno i sadržajno središte. Nad ulazom u pavlinski samo-stan nalazi se natpis:

Tj. Fridrih III. car, darovao je samostan Sv. Petra u Šumi braći reda sv. Pavla, prvog pustinjaka 1459. Ponovno podignuti 1731.

Car Fridrih III. uvjetovao je da u samostanu boravi deset redovnika, od kojih barem šest svećenika. Pavlini su nakon što su ušli u posjed, narednih nekoliko godina nastojali ubrzati proces obnove zgrade i gospodarstva, te su Sv. Petar odredili središtem Istarsko-primorske provincije. Pavlini su u Sv. Petru osnovali pučku školu koju su pohađala aristokratska i građanska djeca iz gradova Istre i seljačka djeca iz Sv. Petra i susjednih sela. Oko 1770. godine u supetarskom samostanu su or-ganizirana predavanja iz filozofije, te možemo

steadily in its centre (portal, window, niche with a statue), while on its narrower lateral sides it is divided by coronas into two storeys. Each surfa-ce, framed by pilasters and coronas, comprises another niche with a stone statue, again work of Paul Riedl.

THE PAULINE MONASTERYThe monastery buildings were constructed in dif-ferent periods and are diversely shaped. Alongsi-de the southern church wall a cloister had been built in the second half of the XV century, partly from the materials dating back to the older, Ro-manesque, Benedictine structure. An interesting blend of styles, unique in Europe, is visible: lar-ge Renaissance arcades on the ground-floor, but Romanesque details on the upper. In the middle of the cloister there is the opening of a well of a spacious cistern. C. De Franceschi, the Italian archaeologist, claims the monastery had been reconstructed at the height of the Renaissance period in1474 with the elements of the old Be-nedictine monastery’s loggia with little pillars placed on the first floor. The cloister was exten-ded and given annexe in 1731 by a set of rooms of baroque vaults. The horizontal wings of the cloi-ster along with the high church façade reduce the scattered space of the square being its visual and meaningful focal point. Just above the entrance to the monastery there is the inscription:

govoriti da je barem za kratko vrijeme u samo-stanu djelovao Filozofski fakultet. Samostan je nakon ukidanja reda 1783. doživljavao, iz godine u godinu, sve do naših dana, rasap i propadanje. Samostan je promijenio nekoliko vlasnika, a kon-cem osamdesetih godina ovog stoljeća kupljen je od strane općine i dat biskupiji i crkvi u vlasništvo. 7. 7. 1993. Pavlini su se vratili u Sv. Petar nakon punih 210 godina. Uz svesrdnu pomoć i dotaciju Ministarstva kulture RH 1998. godine pokrenuta je obnova samostana.

OSNOVNA ŠKOLA U SV. PETRU U ŠUMIOsnovna škola u Sv. Petru u Šumi otvorena je 1857. godine. U to vrijeme bilježimo početke osnovnog školstva u Istri. I prije otvorenja osnovne škole u Sv. Petru u Šumi je postojalo obrazovanje mladeži koje su održavali pavlini.

U Sv. Petru u Šumi, u zgradi u kojoj se danas nalazi supetarska općina, 16. studenoga 1857. otvorena je pučka škola. O tome svjedoče ploče iznad ulaz-nih vrata. Na jednoj je uklesan tekst na latinskom jeziku:

Zaslugom gospodina Franje Švarca, c. kr. pazin-skog pretora, pod nadzorom Josipa Udovičića,

in 1731. The Emperor Frederic stipulated there should be ten monks; at least six of them had to be priests. After having come into the pos-session of the estate, in the years to follow, the Pauline Fathers strived to accelerate the process of reconstructing the building and the rural eco-nomy making Sveti Petar u Šumi the centre of the Istrian- Litoral Province. They had also founded local elementary school attended by aristocrat children, as well as those from Istrian towns along with children of the local inhabitants and those from the surrounding villages. Around 1770 phi-losophy lessons were held in the Monastery, so we can say that at least for a brief period there was a Faculty of Philosophy. The Order was suppressed in 1783 and throughout the following years up to current times the Monastery had constantly expe-rienced rack and ruin. It had been the property of different owners until by the end of the 1980’s it was purchased by the local Municipality who gave it in the possession of the Diocese and the Church. On 7 July 1993 the Pauline Fathers retur-ned in St. Peter in the Woods after being absent for full 210 years. Thanks to the generous help of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia the Monastery’s reconstructions began in 1998.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN SVETI PETAR U ŠUMIThe Elementary school in Sveti Petar u Šumi was founded in 1857 at the times when elementary schooling system came into existence in Istria.

Even before its opening the youth had been tuto-red by the Pauline Fathers.

The school, opened on 16 November 1857, was located in the building which is today the local Municipality’s office. The event is witnessed by the memorial tablets above the entrance door. On one there is a Latin inscription:

općinskog savjetnika i pisara Vida Ljubičića, općinskim sredstvima bi podignut ovaj dom 1857. A na drugoj tekst :u ovoj zgradi je prije 120 godina otvorena prva mjesna osnovna škola.Sv. Petar u šumi 19.11.1977.

Na prvi natpis, povezan s nastavom, naišli smo o javnim ispitima održanim 30.08.1887. na završetku školske godine. Spominjemo ga i radi toga jer nam donekle prikazuje stanje u školama tog vremena. Učenici su bili ispitani iz ovih pre-dmeta: vjeronauka, čitanja hrvatskog, slovničkih vježbi, čitanja i prevođenja talijanskog, računice, zorne obuke, povijesti i zemljopisa.

Ispiti su trajali 15 minuta po predmetu.

Podaci pokazuju da od 184 polaznika školu nije pohađalo 64 učenika odnosno 34 posto, ali se taj broj uglavnom odnosio na starije razrede.

Godine 1912. izgrađena je nova škola, među najljepšima u Istri. Svečano je otvorena 22.09.1912. Uz tri učionice, u zgradi se nala-zio i stan za nadučitelja. Djeca su bila obavezna pohađati školu od 6. do 14. godine. A nakon toga, djeca su trebala polaziti tečajeve za daljnju izo-brazbu.

Zaslugom Ministarstva prosvjete i športa i općine 2003. godine u novom ruhu kao jedna od najljepših u Istri, otvorena je preuređena i dograđena moderna školska zgrada , a 2005. školska sportska dvorana.

Indebted to Mr.Franjo Švarc, magistrate of Pazin, under the supervision of Josip Udovičić, municipal advisor, and copyist Vid Ljubičić, financed by mu-nicipal means, this home was founded in 1857. While on the other it is written: In this building was opened the firstlocal elementary school 120 Years ago.St. Peter in the woods 19 november 1977

Along with the first inscription, related to the tea-ching, we came across notes on public exams held on 30 August 1887 at the end of the school year. We are mentioning it because it partly reveals the position of schools at that period. The stu-dents were examined in the following subjects: Religion, Reading in Croatian, Grammar, Reading and Translating Italian, Algebra, Practical work, History, and Geography. The examination lasted 15 minutes per each subject.

The data shows that out of 184 attendants, 64 of them did not frequent lessons, which makes 34 per cent, but the number was mostly related to the upper classes.

In the year 1912 a new school, one of the most beautiful in Istria, was built. The celebration of the opening took place on 22 September 1912. Apart from the three classrooms the building had also an apartment for the head-master. The school was obligatory for children between the ages from 6 till 14. Having finished their studies, they were obliged to attend further educational courses.

Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Education and Sport, and with the help of the local Munici-pality, a newly readapted, modern, and extended school shone in all its beauty in 2003, being one of the most beautiful in Istria whereas the school gymnasium was finished in 2005.

HRVATSKA ČITAONICA U jeku čitaoničkog pokreta u Hrvatskoj, Dalmaciji i Istri u Sv. Petru je 22. travnja 1889. utemelje-na, a 19. svibnja iste godine otvorena Hrvatska čitaonica. Njen prvi tajnik Matko Lazarić taj je dan ovako opisao: “Narav nakitila nas liepim i toplim danom. Sa raznih strana širom mile nam Istre, posjetilo nas mnogo rodoljuba, želeći i oni svečanosti prisustvovati i dieliti s nama radost i veselje.” Telegram podrške bio je poslao dakovački biskup Josip Juraj Strossmayer koji je od 1891. bio počasni član čitaonice. Počasni članovi bili su još dr. Matko Laginja, dr. Ivan Crnčić, dr. Ivan Šusl, dr. Fran Volarić, prof. Vjekoslav Spinčić. Predsjednik čitaonice je do njenog gašenja bio dugogodišnji supetarski župnik i narodnjak Liberat Sloković. U njoj su se mogle pročitati sve knjige Matice hrvatske, Društva sv. Jeronima, Čitaonica je pri-mala brojne časopise i novine, a s posebnim se interesom čitala “Naša Sloga”. U Sv. Petru u Šumi je 1907. u sklopu čitaonice osnovana “Posujilnica” tj. kreditna zadruga, a 1911. Omladinsko društvo “Seljačka zora”. Dolaskom fašizma i talijanske okupacije kad su knjige mogle nastradati, supe-tarski župnik Liberat Sloković je sve knjige Hrva-tske čitaonice 1922. podijelio među aktivnije i pouzdanije rodoljube i tako ih spasio od uništenja, propasti i lomače.

CROATIAN READING ROOM In the height of the reading movement in Croatia, Dalmatia, and Istria the Croatian Reading Room at Sv. Petar u Šumi was founded on 22 April in 1889 and opened on 19 May the same year. Its first secretary Matko Lazarić narrates about that day: “We were gratified a lovely, warm day. From all around our dearest Istria many patriots came to visit us, wishing to participate in the opening celebration and to feel our joy and happiness.’’ A telegram of support had been sent by the dioce-san of Đakovo Josip Juraj Strossmayer, who was a member of honour of the Reading Room since 1891. Other members of honours were Dr. Ma-tko Laginja, Dr. Ivan Crnčić, Dr. Ivan Šusl, Dr. Fran Volarić, Prof. Vjekoslav Spinčić. The president of the Room, all way up to its closing down, was the parish priest of many years and populist Liberat Sloković. In the Room you could read all the books edited by ‘’Matica Hrvatska’’ (‘’Matrix Croatica’’), ‘’The Society of St. Jerome’’, it received numerous magazines and newspapers, among which ‘’Naša Sloga’’ (‘’Our Concordia’’) was read with special in-terest. As a part of the Room in 1907, in Sv.Petar, a credit union called ‘’Posujilnica’’ was established, and in 1911 a youth association “Seljačka zora” was founded. With the arrival of fascism and the Italian occupation, when books were in threat of being destroyed, in 1922 the parish priest Liberat Sloković distributed all the books of the Croatian Reading Room among the more active and tru-stworthy patriots, thus saving them from ruin, destruction and bonfire.

THE FRAGMENT OF SV. PETAR U ŠUMI The wooden beam fragment with the Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabet inscription on it was di-scovered among the stones of the ruined wall at Sv.Petar u Šumi. Ali I Zajedničko Dobro I Zlo: Godine Mira I Napretka, Blagostanja I Propadanja, Teške Godine Ratova, Razaranja, Bolesti I Gladi.Mjesto Tinjan Spominje Se Prvi Put Kao Antoniana Jer Je Stara Župa I Prva Crkva Bila Posvećena Sv. Antunu, Opatu I Prvom Pustinjaku. U Sv.

Petru U Šumi Bio Je Samostan Braće Benediktinaca, Nasljednika Sv. Benedikta, Utemeljitelja Europe, Koji Je Obnovio Gospodarstvo I Kulturu Ranosrednjovjekovne Europe. Kasnije Su Došli Pavlini, Redovnici Kojima Je Rodonačelnik Bio Sv. Pavao, Prvi Pustinjak. Ti Sveci, I Njihovi

Sljedbenici, Obnovitelji Su Kulture I Gospodarstva Te Su Dali Pečat Svome Vremenu Te Su Zato Postali Uzori Koji Ukazuju Put Prema Boljitku, Napretku I Slobodi Pojedinaca I Zajednica. Uzori Koji Su Nam Mnogo Bliži, S Našega Domaćeg Prostora, Jesu: Iz Tinjana Josip

WHAT DID THE VILLAGERS OF SV. PETAR DO FOR A LIVING

The inhabitants of Sv. Petar u Šumi had always worked on the fields, they cleared huge forests after which the village had obtained its name, but the arid land could hardly provide for large families. The construction of the Trieste – Pula railway brought first employment to the villa-gers, while those braver and more skilled got hired in the coal and bauxite mines of Labin. The inhabitants of Sv. Petar were renowned and ap-preciated as masterly bricklayers and craftsmen, and today the Municipality numbers over twenty building contractors and artisan trades. In 1923 a tobacco production guild was established, and the seedbeds, dry-kiln, warehouse, and pools were built. The whole area surrounding Sv. Petar and the nearby villages took part in the tobacco production which lasted until 1960’s when it ceased working for good and was replaced by the poultry breeding industry managed by a Pazin company ‘’Puris’’. In 1976 a modern meat factory plant was built along with its slaughter-house for butchering and manufacturing of chicken and tu-rkey meat. ‘’Puris’’ is, together with some smaller firms, the actor of the area’s progress.

SUPETARSKI ULOMAK Ulomak kamene grede s ćiriličkim i glagoljičkim natpisom, otkriven je među kamenjem urušenog zida u Sv. Petru u Šumi. Natpis potječe iz XII. stoljeća. U prvom redu je ćirilicom zapisano AMEN, što može biti završetak neke molitve ili zaziva. Ispod je glagoljicom zapisano IÊKOV M.

ČIME SU SE SUPETARCI BAVILISupetarci su se od uvijek bavili poljoprivredom, krčene su velike šume po kojima je i naselje dobilo ime, ali je škrta zemlja teško mogla prehranjivati brojne obitelji. Gradnjom željezničke pruge Trst-Pula počinju prva zapošljavanja, a odvažniji i spo-sobniji zapošljavaju se u rudnicima ugljena (La-bin) i boksita. Supetarci su bili poznati i cijenjeni diljem Istre kao vrsni zidari i majstori, a danas u općini djeluje preko dvadeset građevinskih i maj-storskih obrta i tvrtki. Godine 1923. osnovano je društvo za uzgoj duhana, izgrađeni su rasadnici, sušionice, skladišta, bazeni. Cijela Supetarština i okolna mjesta uključili su se u uzgoj duhana i ta je proizvodnja trajala do 60-tih godina XX. stoljeća kada je potpuno ugašena, a zamijenjena je uzgojem purana pod okriljem pazinskog Puri-sa. 1976. godine u Sv. Petru je izgrađen moderni pogon Mesne industrije sa klaonicom za klanje i preradu purećeg i pilećeg mesa, a tvrtka Puris s nekoliko manjih tvrtki i danas je nositelj razvoja mjesta.
