Welcome to the Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE) where staff are fi rm advocates of lifelong learning and committed to providing fl exible and appropriate learning opportunities for adult students.

The BA Humanities (part-time) Degree Programme is offered on campus at Singleton Park and in various community venues in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

The programme is specifi cally designed for those who choose to study on a part-time basis because of work, family or other commitments. Our students come from many different walks of life and during the last 21 years, over 426 people have graduated from the programme gaining a qualifi cation that can aid their careers and provide a sense of achievement and self-fulfi lment. The fl exibility and structure of the degree programme has enabled them to study and achieve their goals while still continuing with their busy everyday lives.

PROGRAMME STRUCTUREStudents can study part-time for a degree in Humanities or for a ‘named degree’ in English or History. A wide range of courses is available in a variety of subjects which allow students to tailor their studies to their own needs and interests.

Students can choose two subjects to study each year throughout the programme and they can also mix and match their choice of venues.

The majority of classes are delivered via the traditional face-to-face method. However students in Pembrokeshire are often taught via a video-conferenced link from Swansea which is an exciting and ongoing development. At all classes, a variety of teaching methods are used - from small seminars to discussion groups and workshops.

ACAdEMIC SUPPORT We recognise that students returning to study after a sometimes lengthy absence from education may have particular

requirements in terms of study support. In order to make the transition to studying a smooth one, we offer an extensive study support service. At the start of every year we offer FREE Academic Support Sessions for new students before they commence their part-time degree studies. These are organised on campus and in community venues - see page 39 for further details.

During the academic year, study skills tutors are available on request to help students with any academic or study skills issues. Furthermore, students have access to a student online support site (SOS). This is a web-based learning environment which includes study skills advice and other useful information.

TUTOR EXPERTISEAt DACE, we have an excellent group of tutors who, in addition to being experts in their own disciplines, are also committed to the education of adults and to widening access in general. They have a fundamental role in enthusing students and it is largely due to their expertise that students are able to keep on-track, stay motivated and achieve to their full ability.

For those students who may not be quite ready for degree level study, we have two very successful programmes which help prepare students for the degree -

• The BA Degree Preparation Programme in Humanities (starts in April 2013 for 10 weeks)

• The HE foundation Certifi cate in Humanities (starts in September 2013 for 30 weeks)

• A wide variety of short courses ranging from Astronomy and Languages to Creative Writing and IT

BA Humanities (Part-time) degree Programme / Rhaglen Radd BA yn y dyniaethau (Rhan-amser)

The part-time degree is a flexible programme which allows students the option to study a variety of courses on campus and/or at community venues at different times of the day. For example, a student may choose to study sociology on campus during the evening and history at Neath during the day.

Students can gain a BA Honours degree in Humanities or a ‘named degree’ in English or History (dependent on module choice).

In order to achieve a BA Honours degree student must accumulate 360 credits. They must achieve 120 credits at each of the three levels of the programme. Students normally pursue two courses per year where each course is worth 30 credits. Upon successful completion of each course students will gain 60 credits per year. It is therefore possible to gain an honours degree in a minimum of six years. Students may, however, take longer than this but studies must be completed within ten years of initial enrolment.

I ennill gradd BA Anrhydedd, rhaid i fyfyriwr gasglu 360 o gredydau. Rhaid ennill 120 o gredydau ar bob un o dair lefel y rhaglen. In order for us to reach as many students as possible, in addition to being able to reach relatively small groups in the community, we are expanding the innovative use of video-conferencing on our programme.

We will be using courses taught to students on the Swansea University campus and simultaneously transmitting them to classes in Pembrokeshire. This year these will all be at Level 1, 2 and 3. English and History will be offered in Pembrokeshire College and English, History and Sociology at the Fishguard Community Learning Centre.

Other dACE Programmes

the higher education (he) Foundation certificate in humanities is aimed at people who are ready to take their first steps into he and gain a qualification in a supportive and encouraging environment. it is designed for students who might want a longer lead into he study and is a two-year part-time programme. the programme is FREE to eligible students.

the he Foundation certificate in humanities starts in September 2013 and will be taught at community venues in Swansea, neath port talbot, carmarthenshire and pembrokeshire. the programme requires students to attend classes for one day (e.g.10am - 2.30pm) a week for two years. Students will gain 60 credits per year at he level 0.

the programme is made up of compulsory and optional courses and allows students to develop an overview of humanities-related subjects, such as Sociology, history, literature, philosophy, psychology, counselling, Study Skills and it. in order to achieve the he Foundation certificate, students must take all compulsory courses and choose two optional courses (as a group). Students also need to pass assessments and reach the required attendance for all courses.

the Ba degree preparation programme in humanitieS Starting april 2013

the Ba degree preparation programme in humanities is a short preparatory course for those adults who are considering studying at higher education (he) level. it is designed for those who have not recently studied and who may not have any formal qualifications.

this programme starts in April 2013 for 10 weeks and will be taught at the Singleton campus in Swansea and in community venues across Swansea, neath port talbot, carmarthenshire and pembrokeshire.

the Ba degree preparation programme in humanities is FREE to eligible students and after successfully completing this, many students progress to the Ba honours (part-time) degree in humanities or to other courses with dace or elsewhere.

the structure of the Ba degree preparation programme in humanities reflects the flexible nature of the part-time degree and students can mix and match courses at a number of venues and on different days to allow the programme to fit in around their busy lives. Students choose two subjects from a wide variety such as history, literature, philosophy, psychology sociology, counselling and many more.

the second part of the course is concerned with the development and nature of egyptian civilisation down to the death of ramesses ii. this culture, of extraordinary richness, is the best documented of all ancient civilisations before the rise of the classical period. the relative abundance of surviving data allows a vivid insight into the world of the pharaonic culture.

Just 50 years ago the planets, and even our moon, were largely unknown to human society. today they are part of our consciousness. how and why did this happen - and what have we discovered about our solar system, and potential others, since then? Seeking historical roots this course charts one of the last great quests of human exploration. term one: the Solar System: an in-depth consideration of its nature and scale; from planets to meteorites; from comets to an understanding of those huge impact structures that helped drive that greatest of all mysteries - life on earth. we will consider it all. term two: the moon: From galileo to JFK. a detailed study; from lunar geology (and mapping), to the apollo program - and the basic mechanics, engineering, computer science, history and social context of the apollo space flight. a rare opportunity to acquire a knowledge of that unique object in the night sky. this course is an analysis and historical survey of the lives of philip ii and alexander (“the great”) of macedonia, and the various ancient authors who wrote about, or were directly connected, with them. we begin by examining the political and social changes that occurred in greece following the defeat of athens in the peloponnesian war, briefly examine the rise and fall of thebes, and analyse how, and why, greece was conquered by philip ii and his son alexander. the social, political, and military history of maecdonia is examined in detail, as are the personalities, strengths, and influences of philip ii and alexander the great, and the theban general epaminondas. the course concludes with a detailed analysis of the campaigns of alexander, during which we will also examine the impact his achievements, and his failures, have had on western culture and civilisation.

the cultural, political, economic and social changes in Britain during the period of the 1980s and early 1990s. the period of the new right until the advent of new labour in 1997. the significance of social policies and the development of consumerism and individualism which radically challenged the social democratic consensus of the post-war welfare state. the analytical concepts of writers such as gramsci and Foucault and the postmodernists’ theorists are employed to seek an understanding of these changes. against this background, a critical examination of the ways in which these changes were reflected and constructed in the popular culture, especially in films such as the Full monty, Brassed off and the period reconstruction of the merchant ivory films. the advent of a British-asian film genre in films such Bhaji on the Beach and my Beautiful launderette is also studied as well as the radical films of mike leigh and Ken loach.

this course will discuss whether the english reformation was a great political, religious and cultural watershed or whether it was a ‘long reformation’, a protracted process rather than an ‘event’. we will consider how strong the late medieval church was on the eve of the reformation and whether the english people welcomed the dismantling of their pious traditions. we will assess whether the reformation was less successful, less complete and more piecemeal than was previously thought and consider questions such as how effectively religious and political change was enacted in the localities and how local communities reacted to the swings in official policy. a predominantly chronological approach will be adopted with interweaving of important themes in the history of the reformation period.

By means such as parody or by respectful imitation, in a spirit of anger or celebration, authors are constantly rewriting the texts of their predecessors; writers re-present themes, characters, situations that they have encountered in already-existing texts, setting up an entertaining (and instructive) ‘conversation’, sometimes between contemporaries, sometimes across the centuries. texts to be read include works by Shakespeare, Keats, donne and modern authors such as tony harrison and angela carter. a full reading list will be available later.

this course will deal with the history of germany in the inter-war period and will focus on the emergence and collapse of the weimar republic, the development of national Socialism, the establishment of the third reich and various aspects of life in the nazi state. it will have a strong ideological element in that the roots of national Socialism will be examined along with the particular contributions made by hitler and other leaders of the nSdap.

women, Sex and Society: Britain 1860-1970 Level 2 Codes: DAL259 (20 credits) and DAL260 (10 credits)Level 3 Codes: DAL357 (20 credits) and DAL358 (10 credits)

this course explores a wide range of debates concerning the role of women in sexual politics and questions how attitudes to sex have both reflected and stimulated wider societal changes in Britain. this period saw immense changes in society and the lives of women, but newspaper headlines like ‘shrieking sisterhood’ in the 1870s and ‘yelling harpies’ in the 1970s, suggest that women raising their heads above the sexual parapet continued to provoke disapproval and social panic.

Students will examine how attitudes to sexual behaviour were both fluid and contradictory and were contested via both class and gender.

Part-time Fee Grant

the government has introduced a new package of support for part-time students who are studying at least 50% of an equivalent full time course. the support consists of:

n a fee grant which covers up to the full cost of tuition Fees (maximum of £690)

n a course grant of up to £1155 (towards travel, books etc.)

you do not need to repay the support for any academic year you complete.

the amount you receive will depend on your income and that of your partner.

n you will qualify for the maximum support if your income is less than £16,865 or if you are in receipt of income-assessed benefi ts (e.g. housing Benefi t, council tax Benefi t)

n partial support will be available if your income is over £16,865 but less than £25,435

you may also be able to get extra help on top of the Fee grant or course grant if you have adult or children that depend fi nancially upon you. this extra help includes:

n adult dependants’ grant (adg) n childcare grant (ccg) n parents’ learning allowance (pla)

all part-time degree students have access to a variety of learning resources: n the Star handbook (Study tips to achieve results) has

been designed to identify and develop the academic skills students will need to succeed. all part-time degree students will be given a copy of the Star handbook at enrolment/induction

n Student online Support (SoS) is an online learning resource and provides information on learning support, careers advice and guidance and specific information for part-time degree students. Students can access SoS via www.swansea.ac.uk/dace/sos

n Star workshops are held throughout the academic year to support part-time degree students. these are organised on campus and at community venues and are often combined with library support sessions. Further information about this will be available at enrolment/induction

n Study Skills tutors at dace are here to help and can offer confidential advice and information. they are available to answer general queries regarding the part-time degree and particular study skills concerns. Students can access study support from Study Skills tutors on a one-to-one basis, either by telephone, by e-mail or in person.

As a part-time degree student, The South Wales Miners’ Library, located on Hendrefoelan Campus, is your first point of contact.
