Endless variety.Flowing trails and high passes – a land full of highlightsFrom the palm trees in Ticino to the glaciers in the high Alps, and from the sparkling lakes to the rolling hills of the Jura – Switzerland offers tremendous scenic diversity in a compact area. Cyclists and mountain bikers enjoy it to the full on an endless variety of routes: from gentle lakeshore lanes and winding forest tracks to steep pass roads and spectacular alpine trails.
For an expert opinion, we spoke with the world cycling champion Cadel Evans (Australian) to get an insider tipCadel, you became world cycling champion in Switzerland, you have lived for many years in Ticino and you are ambassador for the Swiss bike brand BMC. Do you have a favourite route in Switzerland?“There are lots… but my absolute favourite in the whole world is the Albula Pass in Graubünden. I also enjoy riding in the Muggio valley in Ticino.”
Cadel Evans, winner of the Tour de France in 2011, the UCI Road
World Championships in 2009, and the Mountain Bike World Cup
in 1998 and 1999.

12 Swiss Bike Hotels.
Hosts of the high trails.Conny and Beni Kaufmann are familiar faces in the spectacular landscapes that frame the pretty resort of Grindelwald. They run the Hotel Lauberhorn and are natural hosts who adore their work, but they also share an-other passion: mountain biking.
them back onto their bikes, time and again – and the same goes for their guests.
And then they set off down the sin-gle-track trail. They show real talent as they twist through the alpine meadows and forest with slick technical mastery: but neither acquired skills at an early age. In fact their first passion was paragliding, which is how Conny and Beni Kaufmann met. But today, they get that flowing feeling on the ground rather than in the air – or Conny does, at least. Beni is a qualified tandem paraglider pilot, and so continues to get his kicks in the sky as well as on land. It’s obvious, though, how much both enjoy mountain biking – also thanks to all their training in technique and their countless rides.
During the summer, Conny and Beni Kaufmann often accompany guests on bike tours; when the opportunity arises, they also enjoy going for a ride together, just the two of them. Like today. They chat away as they climb steadily towards Grosse Scheidegg. Sports, and especially mountain biking, are an important part of their lives. They aren’t competitive; they don’t race. For them, it’s all about the experience. They live their passion – just like their guests. Eventually they reach the open expanses up at Grosse Scheidegg. They have come here countless times, but the spectacular setting still captivates them as much as it did the first time. The North Face of the Eiger rises sheer into the sky in front of them. This thrill of experiencing the stunning nature is what draws

Riding high: Conny and Beni Kaufmann, hosts at the Hotel Lauberhorn, share a passion for mountain biking and enjoy introducing guests to the fabulous terrain on their doorstep.
Hotel Lauberhorn**, Grindelwald
Specialised mountain bike hotel for the past ten years, with 25 rooms in four categories. Beau-tiful panoramic location with view of the Eiger, com-fortable chill-out zone and fashion-able sun deck in the garden. Guests receive route tips per-sonally from the hosts.
Obere Gletscher strasse 413818 Grindelwaldhotel-lauberhorn.ch
Their guests come with the same enthusiasm. The trail that Beni and Conny Kaufmann are riding down to the village has not always been marked as a bike trail, and wasn’t always so fluid and fun to ride. Beni and other like-minded riders recently transformed the track themselves with the help of shovels and pickaxes. He champions the biking community in Grindelwald, and when it comes to
local decisions, ensures that the interests of mountain bikers – and especially his guests – are heard. As the host at a Swiss Bike Hotel, his work does not stop at the hotel door, but extends wherever guests like to go: into nature and along the trails. Beni Kaufmann will do anything for mountain biking – just like his guests.

Poschiavo, Graubünden
Trails that no-one will forget so quickly.Whether as a mountain biking freak on a sweat-inducing high-altitude tour or on a leisurely bike tour with the family around the lake – in the Graubünden biking para-dise it’s also worth getting off the saddle from time to time. When professional riders are at the peak of their performance, they have few remaining possibilities to gain those decisive seconds. Endless training has brought them to optimal physical condition: at that point, their equipment can make all the differ-ence. BMC has been accompanying leisure and professional riders for years, listening carefully to their needs. Greg Van Avermaet (2016 Olympic gold medallist in road racing), Julien Absalon (five-times mountain bike world champion) and Cadel Evans (2011 Tour de France winner), to name just a few, are playing a crucial role in developing the bikes. They test prototypes and give feedback throughout the development process.
Special test riders. As a result, the experience of many thousand kilometres of riding on trails and roads flows into the development of BMC bikes, to the benefit of every BMC rider, amateur as well as profes-sional.
