Protecting the environment.

Overview
At a time when the phrases ‘quality of life’ and ‘protecting the environment’ have become inextricably entwined, governments around the world are realising that it is not enough to combat environmental degradation. They have to be seen to be combating it by their own citizens.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) has just such a mandate. Responsible for improving and sustaining a clean and green environment in Singapore, NEA spearheads environmental initiatives through public-private partnership, aiming to protect the country from pollution, maintain the best level of public health and provide world-class meteorological information.

Promoting Singapore.
The Challenge
NEA was recently tasked with playing an even more key role: the positioning of Singapore as a leader in clean energy and the environmental industries. The question was, ‘how could its publications engage the full range of experts – academics, journalists, governmental and NGO, from around the world – and do it well?’

Increasing effectiveness.
The Solution
Switch was given the opportunity to turn NEA’s existing bi-annual magazine, Envision, into a much more effective engagement tool – showing the seriousness with which it takes its role in Singapore as an instigator of debate and action surrounding the environment.
We worked with NEA to make Envision a magazine within which real issues – Singaporean and regional – could be addressed in an attractive, easily understandable, but fundamentally accurate, way; a means to broad professional appeal, as opposed to a false sense of community amongst people that know different.
Drawing on our extensive experience of producing academic publications, we have created a magazine that is both appealing and professional, introducing a range of features that include infographics to convey complex information more effectively. The design of the magazine has been completely overhauled, with new typefaces and style sheets to produce something that is more accessible than an academic journal, though still sufficiently weighty as befits a government institution.

An award-winning magazine on the international stage.
The Results
Envision won bronze for Switch in the ‘Best Government Publication’ category at the International Content Marketing Awards, held in the United States. With more than 800 entries, the event is one of the largest in the industry. See www.contentmarketingawards.com for details.
Envision then won two awards for the client (the National Environment Agency – Singapore Environment Institute) at the Apex Awards 2013 for Publishing Excellence in the Green Magazine and Green Writing categories. The awards are an annual competition for publishers, editors, writers and designers who create print, web, electronic and social media. www.apexawards.com/A2013_Win.List.pdf.
