February was PARP month at Pratt Elementary! One of the awesome activities that all students were able to take part in was the PTSA Scholastic book fair. Lisa Moeller volun- teered to set up the fair and kids in all grades got to browse and buy during the week-long activities. Other activities were a magic show by Magician Cris Johnson, library bingo and D.E.A.R. days (drop everything and read).

Three Barker students were chosen for the most recent “Do the Right Thing Program” awards. Brothers David and Brock Heitzenrater are in sixth grade. They were nominated by counselor Audra Lakeman based on their compassion and caring towards other students. Both boys go out of their way to make others feel accepted. Recently they both decided to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital by holding a Jersey/School Spirit Day. They collected $100 for St. Jude’s. Way to go guys! James (Jimmy) Cantella is a senior. He was nominated by Sandy Gawrys for his role in starting up a peer-mentoring program in the high school. He was also nominated by counselor Scott Minton for his quick thinking when his whole family was involved in a car accident. Jimmy took charge and got his siblings out of the vehicle as his parents could not. We couldn’t be more proud of all of you! 

PILOT UPDATE 

The Board of Education announced the following press release after Judge Richard Kloch’s decision to deny the injunction against the AES PILOT agreement. We will continue to update you on the website and through regular mailings. Thank you for your continued support. 

The Board of Education continues to fully support its resolu­ tion of October 16, 2006 opposing any inducement or PILOT Agreement between the Niagara County Industrial Develop­ ment Agency and the AES Somerset, LLC facility. The Board of Education will move ahead with its lawsuit in conjunction with the Town and County to have the PILOT between the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency and AES Somerset, LLC declared null and void by the court. The Board of Education, in conjunction with the Town of Somerset and the County of Niagara, calls for a full investiga­ tion of the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency and the AES Somerset PILOT Agreement. The Board of Education, recognizing the need to make this a win­win situation going forward that provides the tax cer­ tainty that AES requires, and to keep each of the taxing enti­ ties whole, will submit a proposal to Judge Richard Kloch that they believe is fair and equitable and that meets the express needs of the parties. 

Pratt Principal, Nikki Shanley, dressed up as Mother Goose for her students as promised. The kids earned enough snowballs by exer­ cising so “Mother Goose” took a jump into the pool!

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT UPDATE 

We are very excited to announce that all of the con­ struction bids for the voter­approved capital project are in and the contracts have been awarded. With careful planning, we were able to come in under budget. The majority of the work that needs to be done is identified in our 5 Year Building Condition Survey which is mandated by the State. Necessary work to comply with much of this can now be com­ pleted. Look for construction to start in late March. Our target date for substantial completion of the project is September 5, 2007. There will be several areas that will temporarily be inaccessible due to the construction. Look for a listing of these areas and instructions as to where you can go instead in the next Banner and on the website by the end of the month. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience during the renovations that will result in important and much needed improvements for stu­ dents and programs at our High School. 

...INTRODUCING OUR STUDENT TEACHERS... Ashley Huntington is student teaching under Judy Otto until March 16th. She is a senior at SUNY Brockport and will be graduating in May. She grew up in Lyndonville and loves to work with kids. “I think teaching and coaching today’s youth is one of the most rewarding jobs a person can have.” 

Mary Stoldolka is student teaching under Sandy Gawrys until March 6th. She attends Niagara University and is studying English Education 5­12. This is her first placement as a student teacher. She has spent her time working with tenth graders on a Holocaust unit. 

Connie Gajkowski is student teaching under Gail Damon. She is also a senior at SUNY Brockport and is majoring in K­12 Physical Education. She has been teaching in the K­5 gym classes and the 3rd­5th pool classes. After 8 weeks with Mrs. Damon she will move over to the middle/high school and work under Mrs. Otto. 

Samantha Molnar is student teaching under Phyllis D’Angelo. She attends Canisius College where she is studying Early Childhood/ Childhood Education. She has been meeting with small reading groups and leading the class through their Time For Kids magazines. 

Haley Sherwin collects admission for the Healthy Heart Month Gym Day. Along with lots of fun activities, students and staff competed in a volleyball tournament. 

This cutie was spotted in the hallway with some friends exercising on giant bouncy balls. Pratt Elementary students— the first student who tells me his name gets a prize!

Linda Conlin, former BCS Family and Consumer Science teacher, congratulates Matthew Sweeney on winning Outstanding Student of the Year from the New York State Family and Consumer Sci­ ence Association. You can look for Matthew in the upcoming school musical, The Wizard of Oz. 

The Barker Alumni Association annually grants college scholarships of up to $600 to Barker graduates. The first scholarship was given in 1959. Since that time, the program has grown tremen­ dously, thanks to the generosity of Alumni Association members. To begin the application process, a graduate must 

write a formal letter requesting an application and send it to the Alumni Association Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 266, Barker, NY 14012 before April 1st. This letter will become part of the application. It 

should include information about the applicant and the reason for applying. Completed application forms must be returned by May 1st. The Alumni Scholarship Committee will decide 

on the distribution of the awards by June 1st. Those receiving grants must attend the Annual Alumni Banquet on Saturday, June 9, 2007. An individual may be granted a scholarship three times. The Alumni Association also offers scholarships 

to members of the senior class. They must apply through the BCS Guidance Office. Applications will be made available to seniors in early March. 

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL! It’s hard to believe that 100 days have already gone by!  Pratt Elementary classes celebrated this mile­ stone of the school year by doing activities all day that revolved around the number 100. One classroom collected 100 autographs, another 100 –ING words, and another estimated how far 100 jumps would take them in the hallways. There were also crafts, snacks, treasure hunts and more. Kids used their reading, counting and estimating skills along with their imaginations and creativity. In Mrs. Weller’s kindergarten, kids were asked the question: If you had $100, what would you buy? Here are some of their answers…

Ashley has run track and cross country and played soccer while at Barker. She enjoys running, talking with her friends and read­ ing. She plans on attending NCCC for digital arts and accounting. 

Sara is an honor student who also partici­ pates in the Concert Choir. She enjoys writ­ ing, playing her guitar and listening to music. She would like to attend college and study forensic sciences. 

Sara has been a member of the French club for four years and also holds the office of President. She works at The Waters of Gasport Rehab Center and is an active member of her youth group. 

Ray is heavily involved in sports at Barker. He plays basketball and football and has won the MVP award for basketball twice. Outside of school he enjoys fishing and playing ball. 

Kelsey is an honor role student who plays field hockey, basketball and tennis. She is also involved in AFS and student council. Her future plans include going to college or joining the Army. 

Elizabeth enjoys playing soccer, tennis and swimming on the team. She has been in the Girl Scouts for 11 years and is working towards her gold award. Her future plans include becoming a Supreme Court Justice. 

Ryan loves sports—he has run cross coun­ try and track and played basketball. He is also on a summer baseball league outside of school. He wants to become an architect after college. 

Matthew is involved in several school activi­ ties and clubs including: Gavel Club, AFS, Masterminds, Drama Club and Reflections. He also runs cross country and track and plays basketball. He wants to attend Cornell to get a degree in agriculture.

PEZZINO’S CORNER SAFETY OF VALUABLES WHILE AT SCHOOL

Bringing valuables to school is discouraged.

Parents, if your child has to bring a valuable item to school, please review with them how to properly secure their items.

⇒ Make sure hall lockers are secure by spin- ning the lock one full turn past the last number in the combination.

⇒ Get a lock for your gym locker. Hiding an item is not secure.

⇒ Explain to students that hiding an item in a book bag/backpack in not secure.

⇒ Do not bring extra money to school unless it is required for a payment or a school trip. 

Barker PTSA needs your help! Thank you for supporting our PTSA with a very successful Scholastic Book Fair. Won’t you consider joining our PTSA in a leadership role?  We have several open officer positions for the upcoming 2007­2008 school year.  The filling of these positions is essential for maintaining our longstanding Barker PTSA. PTSA Officer Positions: 

President – Facilitate approximately six meetings per year, prepare an agenda, submit President’s report, arrange for speakers, and coordinate PTSA business. Vice President – Assist the President, submit building usage forms, and participate in various PTSA programs and projects throughout the year. Recording Secretary – Take notes at all PTSA meetings, then record and publish all meeting minutes.  Submit minutes for approval at next meeting. Treasurer – Accurately maintain PTSA financial account, including bank reconciliation, writing checks for approved expenses, prepare annual budget, prepare treasurer’s reports, track expenses by budget categories, and prepare for annual audit. Corresponding Secretary – Read and maintain correspondence at meetings, publish next meeting information, and publish additional PTSA information as needed. 

Training for all positions is available and encouraged from our Niagara Region PTA.  High School Students in need of an extracur­ ricular leadership role are eligible to run for Vice President and Corresponding Secretary.  Elections will be held in April. Any questions or interest, please call Anne Moeller 795­3337, Nominating Committee. Our local PTSA supports our school through many activities, programs, and awards.  Some highlights include: Classroom Grants: Pre­K Hand Print T­Shirts, Elementary Garden Club, 3 rd / 6 th Grade Gingerbread House Project, 6 th Grade Me­ dieval Day, Middle School Drama Club, High School Chemistry Tie Dye T­Shirts, and High School Social Studies related novels. Programs: Reflections Contest, PARP Program School, Summer Reading School Store Certificates, School and Regional 4 th and 5 th grade Spelling Bees, Veteran’s Day speaker, Civil War speaker, Middle School and Elementary Book Fairs provides library materi­ als. Awards: 4 th Grade Moving Up Day, 8 th Grade Graduation, Senior Awards

FROM THE P.E. DEPARTMENT MS/HS Physical Education March Activities 

The Barker Central School Physical Education department is committed to ensuring the safety of each child. The school will provide each student with the following equipment: Shin guards, safety goggles and their own, new mouth guard that they may 

keep when the unit is over. Goalies will be provided with a helmet, chest guard, leg guards and goalie gloves. Floor & Indoor Field Hockey Unit Students will participate in floor/field hockey skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting and safe play along with game play. The students will demonstrate their knowledge and under­ standing of the game by completing a written assignment or quiz. Fitness Center Unit Some students will have the option to participate in a fitness center unit. During this unit stu­ dents will be able to participate in a variety of exercises that will encourage participation in fitness throughout a lifetime. Next Month We will cover indoor soccer and the Fit for Life program. In April’s Banner we will highlight preparing for the Presidential Fitness Challenge. 

WINTER SPORTS SENIORS Basketball will be featured next month 

There were four seniors on the swim team this year: Fred Duchow, Emily Zaepfel, Mike Sajdak , Kate Huttenmaier When asked what their most memorable experience or most valuable lesson was while swimming they replied: In 9th grade I broke the 200 & 400 Free records and I still hold the NOGR Free record—Emily In my first meet, I closed the gap and saved the day in the 200 Free Relay—Mike In the All­League meet I swam my best times—Fred Everything I learned about swimming—Kate 

When asked what they would miss the most about wrestling for the Raiders they replied: The look on a kid’s face when I pin him –Brad The away tournaments—Craig Getting your hand raised after a match –Jake Placing in the top three in tournaments –John Also pictured are Brad Dingman and Steve Cassidy. Both boys qualified for the State Qualifier tournament. Brad took third and Steve won one match and lost two.
