Second: Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, the seventh level dental students should be able to:

1- Know the principles and basis of the diagnostic method.

2- Acquire the practice and skills to take proper history and to do different L.A.

techniques and to do simple and complex extraction.

3- Know the use or application of antibiotics in surgical dentistry.

4- Know How to manage possible Medical emergencies in dental office.

5- Acquire the ability to Diagnose and Treat deferent types of dental infections.

6- Acquire the ability to Diagnose and know the Principles of Treatment of maxillofacial

fracture and possible Complications.

7- Acquire the ability to Diagnose and know how to use Special Investigations in

diagnosis of maxillofacial Cystic Lesions and know the Principles of Treatment.

8- Understand of different pre-prosthatic Surgical Procedures, Indications and

Complications.

9- Acquire the ability to Diagnose medical conditions of surgical importance and know

the proper way for writing a referral to other Medical Specialties.

10- Understand the relation of patient’s medical conditions to oral surgery and the

principles of managements of each condition.

Specific Objectives of the course

-At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1- Identify, the basis, principles and methods of diagnosis of different surgical conditions.

2- Interpret the etiological factors for pericoronitis.

3- Acquire the ability to classify different types of pericoronitis.

4- Distinguish between different types of pericoronitis.

5- Recognize different methods for treatment of pericoronitis.

6- Define the terms impacted, embedded, ankylosed, unerupted, malposed, submerged and supernumerary

tooth.

7- Discuss different caused of impaction including both local and systemic causes.

8- Recognize possible complications of impacted teeth.

9- Realize classification of impacted lower third molar.

10- Acquire the skills to diagnose the position of impacted lower third molar and determine its proximity

to vital structures with radiographs.

11- Describe different surgical flaps to extract the impacted tooth.

12- Realize every step of the surgical procedures used for removal of the impacted tooth.

13- Identify every precaution during surgical procedure.

14- Realize classification of impacted maxillary third molar.

15- Discuss different surgical techniques used to remove impacted maxillary third molar.

16- Realize classification of impacted maxillary canine.

17- Describe different radiographs and techniques to determine position of the impacted canine.

18- Describe the requirements of an ideal mucoperiosteal flap.

parasitic origin.

24- Outline the general treatment of cysts including different techniques as enucleation and

marsupialization.

25- Discuss the principles of antibiotic use.

26- Realize the possible conditions indicated for use of prophylactic antibiotics.

27- Discuss the uses of analgesics in dentistry.

28- Identify different types of analgesic drugs including narcotics and non-narcotics.

29- Identify different non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, their action and possible side effects.

30- Discuss the surgical anatomy of mandible and muscle attachment.

31- Classify mandibular fractures.

32- Clarify every method to diagnose mandibular fractures.

33- Interpret clinical signs and symptoms associated with fractured mandible.

34- Discuss different treatment methods for fractured mandible, including closed and opened reduction

techniques.

35- Compare between the management of fracture in geriatric and children fractures.

36- Discuss possible complications of mandibular fracture and their management.

37- Describe the first aid applied to traumatized patient with mandibular and maxillary fractures.

38- Distinguish between every life threatening condition including, brain damage, respiratory system

injury, and abdominal injury associated with traumatized patient.

40- Diagnose different types of middle third fractures.

41- Discuss every treatment method in middle third fractures.

42- Summarize possible complications of fractured middle third and their management.

pathophysiology of atrophic ridge. And understand the role of possible local and systemic factors.

58- Discuss different pre-prosthatic procedures and their indications.

59- Understanding and have the ability to Recognize possible complications of each pre-prosthatic

procedure.

60- Acquire the skills for detecting a medical conditions that required a special medical precautions.

61- Acquire a sound knowledge in medical precautions that may required for each conditions.

62- Acquire the ability to manage different medical emergencies that may developed during dental

practice.

Third: ( A ) Course Description:

Oral surgery is the art of using scientific knowledge to identify , diagnosis and

treatment the surgical conditions , and to distinguish one disease from another .The course is

deals with the study of the principles and basis of the minor surgical procedure , diagnosis

and treatment plans and also includes the application of local anesthetic procedure and simple

extraction, management of oral and maxillofacial infections, principles, diagnosis and

management of maxillofacial trauma, diagnosis, and management of maxillary sinus

conditions, diagnosis and understanding the patho-physiology of atrophic ridge and different

pre-prosthatic Surgery and finally an introduction to understand medical conditions of special

concern in surgery and principles of writing of a surgical referral to other specialty. Finally,

the main goal of this course is the identification of the problem list of the patient, the final

diagnosis, and description of the comprehensive surgical treatment planning and finally

performing the suitable surgical treatment.

Application part: (Clinical part)

The Clinical requirements for this Course is : 25 Clinical Cases

With minimum requirements of 15 cases to pass the Course.

Each Candidate should finish 10 Cases (with minimum of 6 Cases) of Simple Extraction at 1st

semester. And 15 Cases (with minimum of 9 Cases) of Complex Extraction at 2nd

semester.

Less than 15 Cases mean failure in the Clinical Part of this Course.

The Theoretical Part will not be used for compensation of the Clinical Part.

This is mean that each candidates should pass each part of the Course (the Clinical part and

Theoretical part) to pass the Course.

Final Clinical Exam: is usually carried out in 2 Cases:

One Case of Simple Extraction and one Case of Complex Extraction.

The Examination will include but not limited to the following:

1) History taking and Medical Interpretations,

2) Selection of proper Instruments,

3) Skills in Surgical Procedure,

4) Patient’s Handling,

5) Post-operative Instructions.

6) Surgical knowledge.

7) Writing of proper records

The Student can be Examined at any time after 7th

week of second semester as he feeling fit to be

examined and the case is suitable for the examination.

The Student should take the agreement of his Supervisor before the exam
