‘MAMA MARGARET’s

Mama Margaret's is a craft business which supports women in Dagoretti, one of the poorest slums in

Nairobi. It’s informal life began at Savio Salesian College but it was, formally, set up and run by the

students of Thornleigh Salesian College, in Bolton in 2011. ‘Mama Margaret’s develops training and

work projects for local women. The project began with six "Mamas" – single women or single

mothers who make a range of craftwork items that the students sell. All the proceeds are returned

to the project in Dagoretti. Since the project began it has raised over £10,000. In 2014 the project

won an ‘Observer Ethical Award’
