Air conditioning accounts for30%ofHongKong'selectricity consumptionon average. Toimprove the environment and conserve energy in Hong Kong, one of the Government'smajorinitiativesisimplementingadistrictcoolingsystem(DCS)attheKaiTakDevelopment(KTD) to supply chilled water to buildings in the new development area for centralisedairconditioning.KTD,withaplannedtotalofabout1.7millionsquaremetres(m2)inpublicandprivatenondomesticairconditioned floorareasrequiringabout284megawatt (MW)coolingcapacity,presentsauniqueopportunityforimplementationofaDCSinHongKong.
The DCS project is to construct a large scale centralized airconditioning system whichproduceschilledwaterat itscentralchillerplantsanddistributesthechilledwatertouserbuildingsinKTDthroughanundergroundwaterpipingnetwork.Theprojectcommencedin2011 and theworks are targeted to be fully commissioned by 2021. The projectwill bedevelopedandcommissionedforoperation inphases.TheearlyphasesoftheDCSprojecthavebeen implemented and this visitprovides a valuableopportunity forparticipants toappreciate the latestdevelopmentofdistrict cooling system and to knowmore about itsdevelopment,operation,andmaintenanceofthesystem.
