permiten llegara a soluciones innovadoras, crear nuevos productos e incrementar nuestra
8
habilidad creativa.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this work was to design a wastewater treatment plant with microbial fuel cells
without a membrane, under environmental conditions in the area, which is why the objective of
this study was the design of a microbial fuel cell without a membrane. pilot scale that is
economical and easy to construct, for the treatment of wastewater parallel to energy production,
using real wastewater.
This project was worked with wastewater from CIDETEQ, Mexico, where it was developed at
laboratory and field level where materials and laboratory equipment were used.
For the elaboration of the project, first a market study was carried out with which surveys and
interviews were made to hotels, which provided us with primary information about the needs of
the clients about the wastewater treatment plants they need and the regulations that must comply
In the second place, secondary information was available on articles, patents and commercial
systems in order to appreciate what the market counts and not have a copy of any.
As a third place, a benchmarking was carried out, which provided us with important information
due to the fact that a study of the competition was made, and where we would be as a company
and how profitable we could be.
The fourth step was a QFD, which is a process that helps companies identify the needs of
customers, as well as their expectations of the services or products offered by the company. Once
identified, the needs are assigned the priority to satisfy them according to their importance. This
process also helps the company to identify the points where it is most necessary to concentrate
energies of human and material resources to be able to satisfy the needs of the client. Therefore,
we were able to obtain the variables and technical specifications on the new design of wastewater
treatment plant with a microbial fuel cell without membrane. In this part we also made a study of
our design with the competition.
As a fifth step, the TRIZ methodology was used, which is based on a powerful methodology that
takes advantage of the systematic thought process. It is based on the knowledge and experiences
of the most illustrious minds in history, and provides us with a series of tools that allow us to
come up with innovative solutions, create new products and increase our creative ability. The
TRIZ methodology is a methodology based on the study of human knowledge (patents) and that
presents us with systematic thinking.

As a sixth step, the AMEF methodology was used, which is a methodology widely used for risk
analysis. AMEF is an effective method to design and produce risk analysis. Design and
manufacturing processes are examined, and opportunities are identified for deficiencies and
shortcomings that can lead to customer dissatisfaction. Before delving into the details, we can
begin by conducting a test. The AMEF provides a tool to capture all this knowledge in a structured
way, and offers possibilities to take measures that reduce the risk of a disappointed client to a
minimum.
And in the final stage, laboratory tests were carried out, where a hydraulic retention time of 24
hours was counted and pH, COD and voltage tests were carried out.
The average results of the physical parameters were: pH, varied from 7 to 8; temperature was
ambient level. The chemical parameters had the following averages; COD was 50-60%, voltage
was 200-400 mV.
It will be necessary to improve certain parts of the design in order to be a real competition in the
market of wastewater treatment plants, but this project teaches us that a microbial fuel cell without
a membrane can be a commercial and industrial scale competition.
