50th Anniversary Edition Tehachapi’s Own Phone Book A Local Tradition Since 1963

The telephone directory you hold in your hand — Tehachapi’s Own Phone Book — began when Al and Winifred Small, the founders of Tehachapi Lumber Company, published hometown listings of residents because the phone company book published names so small that many people could not read them .

“My dad’s eyesight was failing,” said Bob Small, who later (with his brother Gary) bought the company from his father .

The “Lumber Company phone book” became a ready reference for local numbers and the Small family continued to publish the book for a number of years .

Eventually, Paul Benz entered the picture, assisting the Small family and gaining an advertisement for Benz Sanitation on the back page .

By 1991, the project had grown too large for the Smalls and Bill and Betty Mead, then publishers of the Tehachapi News, took over publishing the homegrown phone book, renaming it “Tehachapi’s Own Phone Book” or “TOP .”

The Meads continued to expand and improve the book that is not only Tehachapi’s original local phone book, but also a hometown favorite .

When the Meads sold the Tehachapi News, the TOP Phone Book was part of the deal and continues to be an important part of the Tehachapi News family of publications .
