Part II 1) Failure Planes in Brittle Materials like Chalk:
Type of Load Location of Failure Plane Angle of Failure Plane
Axial Centre 90°
Torsion Centre 45°
3 Point Load Centre 90°
2a) By applying Axial load failure plane in chalk is perpendicular to its axis due to maximum principal stress while it is inclined at 45° to the axis of mild steel due to maximum shear stress. 2b) In Axial load failure can occur at any point in the body.

In Torsion the failure can occur at any point in the body. In 3 point load the failure should occur at the centre of the body because the bending moment is maximum at the centre of the body. 2c) According to Maximum Shear Stress failure theory failure theory, fracture in torsion for ductile materials generally occurs in the plane of maximum shear stress perpendicular to the axis of bar.
