1. Is free fair?Do you ever download music? Do you always pay for it? What about films? Loads of things can be downloaded for free from the internet. Should it all be free?

‘Media piracy’, which is downloading material you actually should pay for, but don’t, has caused quite a public debate. The film and music industry has sued a number of young people for huge amounts of money, for breaking the copyright laws. These laws are to protect the people whose work, ideas and money have gone into producing music, texts and visual materials.

Some companies argue that free access is best for the film and music industry in the long run. Is this a good argument? They are working to make music and film freely available. However, many people say that downloading illegally is the same as stealing. Is it? Are people who download illegally also likely to go shoplifting or stealing handbags? Is there a difference?

A college student was ordered to pay $22,500 for each of 30 songs he had illegally downloaded.

I download illegally, but I also buy the music I like

One in three regular music buyers also download illegally.

Illegally downloading MP3 files from the internet can open up the pirates’ computers to some very nasty viruses. Ouch!

Sometimes songs are not available to buy; they may have gone out of production

Studies show that 57 million Americans download music illegallyArtists

and their companies lose money

I think the music and film industries control sales and distribution in an unfair way

Is free fair? Write an article (500-600 words) where you discuss the pros and cons presented in the introduction and quotes above and include your own views on the issues.

2. Man lying on a wall

The other day, I was in the Lowry Art Gallery and Entertainment Centre in Manchester. I was looking at the works of the artist L.S. Lowry. One painting in particular, ‘Man lying on a wall’, stuck in my mind. Apparently, Lowry had painted the picture after he had seen the man from a bus. Like Lowry, I wanted to know more: Why was he lying there? What was he thinking? What was in his briefcase? In short, what was his story?

Share your story (500-600 words) of ‘Man lying on a wall’ with other teenagers who write into the popular, creative writing site ’Story4teens’.
