Speaking
Hi everyone! Welcome to this short but intensive 3 hour Speaking
program. Over our 3 hours, I hope we can cover some Speaking activities
that can help you and your students. The main focus of the program is
to help you and your students speak.
First of all, I hold the view that it is important to plan and write before
you speak, so in some of this 3 hour session, I will look at what this
means, but for other activities, we will follow other methods.
So we will look at Speaking covering:

Topics
I teach a lot of conversational English classes, and I have a bit of
freedom in the my syllabus design. My main focus is on fluency, not
accuracy. I want my students to open their mouths and say something.
So, to do this I ask the students to follow some learning stages. These
are:
Prepare - Play - Plan - Practice - Produce
Prepare = Book Study (Vocabulary/Reading/Listening/Conversation
Expressions/Phrasal Verbs/Idioms)
Play = Speaking Activities to practice Vocabulary/ Conversation
Expressions/Phrasal Verbs/Idioms
Plan = Completing 2 Speaking Pages (Students write down what
they want to speak in the Practice and Produce classes)
Practice = Students use their 2 Speaking Pages (open book) in
groups of 3 to Practice what they have written (teacher
corrects grammar, proposes ideas, further research etc. -
teacher expects mistakes)
Produce = Students (in the same group) use their 2 Speaking
Pages (closed book) to speak (the teacher grades here, with
little help offered)
Another way of looking at this is Scott Thornbhury’ss (2005)
l Awareness
l Appropriation
l Autonomy
Thornbury, S. (2005). Awareness, Appropriation and Autonomy. ETProfessional. Issue 40, September, 11-13.
Now, I know how restrictive your syllabus and institution might be,
so this would or could be a once off activity covering a month. One
stage per week etc.

Plan/Practice/Produce = Completing 2 Speaking Pages (Students
write down what they want to speak in
the Practice and Produce classes)
Hour 2
Debate
One great way to get students speaking, and without the teacher actually
putting in a load of extra hours in preparation is debating. Debates are
great tools for teamwork; character building, knowledge building, empathy,
decision making, argumentative skills, English skills, pronunciation,
listening, organisation...the list goes on...oh also, some fun too! (and
maybe some rewards for students)
In this session we will cover the following:
Four Corners Debate
Mad Debates
Coursebook Debates
Topic Word Debates & more
We will also look at:
Debate Styles (formal and informal)
Debate Language
Debate Websites
Hour 3
Role Plays / Board Games
Hi, in this hour we will be looking at two ways to promote Speaking.
With Role Plays, students can do a little bit of Task Based Learning,
putting themselves in everyday common situations, like being at a
restaurant, getting a train ticket, opening a bank account etc.
I will show you a lot of resources where you can just print materials
that could help you and your students.
In addition, we will be looking at some Board Games, some ready-made,
some with empty boxes your students can fill in and also, some online
interactive games and PPTs for class games.
Most of these games will have grammatical foci, but they can be
adapted to pretty much any EFL learning situation.
I will show you a lot of resources where you can just print materials
that could help you and your students.
