Letter From the President The TAFP Foundation had a fantastic 2015 and 2016! If you are a donor, thank you for being part of our success. If you have not donated, please take some time to read about the good work we are doing and make a one-time donation or sign up for our monthly donor program and begin making a difference.

I have served on the Foundation Board of Trustees for many years and I am proud of the work we have done. In November 2016, I was elected to succeed our longtime president, Dr. Dale

Moquist. We had a chance at our meeting to reflect on the growth of the TAFP Foundation under his 10 years of leadership and the experience inspired me to continue moving us forward. This report of our 2015 and 2016 activities high-lights many of those successes – our annual research grant funding has grown to over $40,000 for this fiscal year, we’ve increased the number of medical students we support to attend AAFP’s National Conference each year, we have more scholarship

opportunities, and we continue to grow two endowments that will provide support for student interest activities and research for years to come.

The support and commitment of our generous donors enables us to do great things together. We have an active Board of Trustees that is dedicated to supporting family medicine and I am proud to serve as President of the TAFP Foundation and see firsthand the generosity of TAFP mem-bers and friends as well as the gratitude of our beneficiaries – those who will continue to carry the on the legacy of the Family Physicians of Texas. We are continuing our focus on practice-based research, encouraging the next generation of Texas family physicians, and supporting them in their journey. TAFP and AAFP Foundations are the only groups looking to the future of our specialty and ensuring that this important work continues.

I hope you’ll take time to read more about the good work of the TAFP Foundation and how your donations make a real difference. Thank you for your support yesterday, today, and tomorrow. For more information and to donate, visit tafp.org/foundation.

Sincerely,

Linda M. Siy, MD, FAAFPPresident, TAFP Foundation

The Texas Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and is organized for scientific and educational purposes in support of the medical specialty of family medicine and for the advancement of the health and well-being of patients.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION

Shaping, Supporting, and Influencing the FutureThe TAFP Foundation’s support of medical students and residents provides these future family physicians opportunities to step out of academia and into the vast spectrum of family medicine. Fostering opportunities for camaraderie, community, and support through professional gatherings – such as TAFP symposiums, Family Medical Interest Groups, and the Preceptorship Program – enables them to explore how TAFP fits into their career goals and how family medicine puts them on the forefront of the medical revolution. The Foun-dation’s dedication provides invaluable opportunities for the family physicians of tomorrow.

Medical Students: The Core of our WorkWhile the TAFP Foundation supports practice-based research and some resident activities, the majority of the funds expended each year are devoted to medical students. Supporting and encouraging medical students interested in family medicine has always been a fun-damental part of the Foundation’s work. As the state’s population swells at both ends of the age spectrum, the need for primary care physicians has never been greater.

Substantial evidence exists demonstrating that when patients have access to primary care physicians, com-munities enjoy improved health care outcomes, better overall health, and lower health costs. Yet Texas has long had a shortage of primary care physicians. Three of every four counties in Texas are designated as whole or partial Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Areas. Increasing the number of medical students choosing careers in primary care is critically important to the health of our citizens and our economy.

Medical Student Scholarships: More Than 20 Years of Honoring the Best and Brightest Promoting and fostering interest in family medicine among our bright young women and men in medical school is essential to the future of our specialty. The first TAFP Foundation scholarship was awarded in 1994. Since then, more than 250 scholarships have been awarded to medical students. Some are awarded to stu-dents at a specific medical school and the recipients are chosen by physicians in the community, while others are available to medical students from anywhere in the state.

All of the scholarships are set to continue for years to come. Our endowment has over $2 million in schol-arship funds and we limit the expenditures from each scholarship to 4 percent per year. Thanks to the gener-ous support of the members of the TAFP Foundation, the list of scholarships continues to grow.

Family Medicine Interest Groups: Reaching medical students earlyThe Foundation provides funding for Family Medicine Interest Groups activities at each of the medical schools across the state. FMIG’s are important to the mission of recruiting more medical students to the family medicine specialty. Once a student becomes a member they obtain access to the numerous benefits of TAFP and AAFP membership, including conferences, scholarships and so much more. With our support, FMIG’s hold professional development seminars, preceptor panels, public health initiatives, procedure training workshops, global health panels, and several other activities and events through-out the year that allow medical students to experience the breadth of family medicine. Your continued Foun-dation support helps these essential groups cover the associated costs of these important events.

Throughout my years as a student and resident, the TAFP Foundation funded me to come to meetings twice a year, every Interim Session, every Annual Session. The Foundation also helped support me financially to go to the National Conference where I was able to learn even more about family medicine and its importance to the health care system.

A strong health care system is going to be dependent upon recruiting very good quality medical students into family medicine. Getting students exposure to these meetings helps them understand what life is really like outside of the academic centers. Having funding that enables these students to get to our meetings is extremely important.

Travel Funding: Welcoming Medical Students to Family Medicine MeetingsMedical student members of TAFP are welcome to all TAFP symposia with no registration fee. The TAFP Foundation enables students to participate in TAFP meetings, as well as AAFP’s National Conference, by making travel stipends available to them. The stipend allocation allows up to 84 students from across the state to participate in these informative sessions each year. Additionally, the TAFP Texas Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Students is specifically designed by medical students and residents to address the needs and concerns of their student and resident colleagues.

Family Medicine Residents: Supporting Tomorrow’s LeadersThe Foundation recognizes the residents as future leaders in family medicine and provides funding to help them attend family medicine meetings. There are also scholarships for residents to present research at national meetings and an advocacy scholarship to fund a resident to spend time in Austin engaged in policy research and advocacy. This important funding supports the next generation of family physicians in ensuring that they are well prepared for the challenges they’ll face as health care providers.

Practice-Based Primary Care Research: Foundation Research Projects and the Family Medicine Research Endowment The grant program has been active since 1988 and twice a year the Foundation accepts proposals for research grants. Since then, the Foundation has awarded over $420,000 in grants.

Originally, funding was limited to $5,000 per project through 2015 but has been increased to allow up to $7500 for 2016 and beyond. Many of the projects go on to be published or are expanded into larger studies. Research topics have included several areas of study, such as ambulatory care, workforce and distribution, and the discipline of family medicine.

The Family Medicine Research Endowment Program provides a stable source of income to fund practice-based research in Texas. Champion funds created to honor family medicine leaders are used to support the research efforts of the Foundation. To learn more, visit www.tafp.org/foundation/research.

twenty-three years ago, the tafp foundation had a big idea about the future of family medicine. With that idea in mind they took up the mission of creating opportunities for the medical student and resident members of TAFP. We set a goal to raise $25,000 with the intention of awarding four-to-five percent each year to a medical student interested in family medicine. We spread the word to our members and the TAFP local chapters were instrumental in donating and raising funds for these scholarship opportunities. With respon-sible investing, the scholarship can continue in perpe-tuity and additional scholarships would increase the number of recipients awarded each year.

As we approached and ultimately surpassed our initial goal, we expand our reach and increased the number of opportunities to support and contribute to the future

of family medicine. We began to provide residents with scholarships, dedicated reliable financial support for research, created the Student Interest Endowment, supported the Preceptorship Scholarship Program, and organized student interest activities. As our donations increased and the number of programs grew, so did the number of beneficiaries, from two $1,000 scholarships in 1994 to 22 students and residents receiving more than $32,000 in 2016.

These fantastic opportunities are only possible through the support of members like you. As the TAFP Foun-dation continues to support and encourage the next generation of family physicians, we remain clear and focused on why we do what we do. These endowments are what keep Texas family physicians moving forward and innovating health care.

ENDOWMENTSTamra K. Deuser EndowmentIn July of 2015 Dr. Tamra Deuser passed away after a battle with cancer. To honor her memory and commitment to family medicine the TAFP Foundation created the Dr. Tamra K. Deuser Endowment to fund CME lectures at future TAFP conferences on end-of-life care. We remember her by naming that lecture the Tamra K. Deuser Memorial Lecture.

Tamra grew up in Austin and had a successful career in consumer products manufacturing before becoming a phy-sician. She received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine and completed her residency with the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Res-idency Program. She began practicing in the Flower Mound area in

2002 and continued to see patients until 2014.

Not long after completing residency Tamra became involved with TAFP. She represented the Dallas Chapter for many years and served on numerous committees and commis-sions including as Chair of the Commission on Health Care Services and Managed Care. The staff and her colleagues were honored by the amount of time she dedicated to family medicine when she knew that her time was limited. She was elected to the TAFP Board of Directors in 2013 after our gov-ernance change and served as Parliamentarian 2014-15.

Having gone through cancer treatment herself, she knew the importance of palliative care and wanted to share her expe-riences from the patient perspective. At the 2015 C. Frank Webber Lectureship, she joined Dr. Clare Hawkins in a dis-cussion on palliative care. The lecture was both well received and incredibly important to her. She had hoped to participate in more CME events but that was not to be.

In honor of Dr. Deuser’s life and work, we began fundraising in the fall of 2015. Since then, the fund has reached our initial goal of $25,000. We encourage you to reflect on the contribu-tions Dr. Deuser made to family medicine and to honor her with a donation to the TAFP Foundation.

Patrick Leung EndowmentTAFP member Patrick Leung, MD, and his wife Nancy were the 2015 Philanthropists of the Year. Dr. Leung has practiced family medicine in the booming oil town of Midland, Texas, since 1980. After moving from Hong Kong to Canada, Leung met his now wife, Nancy, while in a pre-med program at the University of Alberta. Nancy was also enrolled at the univer-sity, where she became a registered nurse.

The young couple met during Leung’s first year of medical school, married during his second year, and had their first child during the third. They moved around Canada for a few years, then relocated to Midland where Leung began practic-ing at Alamo Medical Clinic, where Nancy is now his office manager. They raised three children in Midland, all of whom followed in their parents’ footsteps and are now professionals in the health care field.

The Leungs made a generous donation to the TAFP Foundation in January of 2015 to fully endow the Patrick Leung, MD, Medical Stu-dent Schol-arship. It has been used to award scholarships to pre-clini-cal students who partic-ipate in the Texas Family Medicine Preceptorship Program during the summer after their first or second year of medical school.

2015 - 2016 TAFP Foundation Scholarship Recipients continued

When I was a resident, the TAFP Foundation enabled me to attend National Conference and to run for leadership positions, which has made me into the leader I am today.

It’s one thing when you’re telling your friends, “Hey you really need to get involved. You really need to go to this meeting.” It’s another thing when you can say, “The TAFP Foundation has scholarships for you to attend these meetings.” And it really makes a difference in convincing someone who’s not sure if they want to play a bigger role to put their foot out and try something new, and I definitely have the Foundation to thank for getting some of my peers involved in things who otherwise wouldn’t have shown up.

Dr. Brittney Taute 2015 Kolb Scholarship RecipientYou are making a difference in the lives of up-and-coming family physicians. This is what just one of the residents had to share about the ways that the Foundation has impacted her academic and professional goals.

The Foundation solidified my desire to pursue family medicine. In highly specialized academic institutions, family medicine often doesn’t get the admiration it deserves and sometimes students are even discouraged from the field by the specialists we interact with daily. Unless a school has an aggressive family medicine department that shows you what the field truly is, TAFP and AAFP may be your only honest representation of the specialty. Academy conferences are excellent places to meet people who love their jobs and to learn all the amazing things you can do as a family doctor. After seeing the passion and excitement of the family docs I have met at TAFP events, I realized things are much different outside of medical school. The diversity of the field and the ability to customize your practice are two of my favorite things about family medicine.

Thank you for making students and residents feel so very welcomed and appreciated. I was blown away by

the amount of support and love I experienced from all TAFP members I’ve met. The scholarships I received to attend these conferences made all of these wonder-ful opportuni-ties possible. I also received a scholarship from the Foun-dation that will be used for a medical mission trip overseas in my third year of residency!

I can’t thank every single one of you enough for the gen-erous donations that make it possible for me and my colleagues to participate in the incredible experiences TAFP offers. It wouldn’t have been feasible for me to attend on my own funding, so it is absolutely because of each and every one of you that I was there.
