The 1978 Ice Hockey World Championships were awar-ded to Czechoslovakia by the IIHF, but there was a condi-tion – to have two connected ice rinks. The Czechoslova-kian Ice Hockey Association, in cooperation with Prague City Hall, started to construct a second rink, which was connected to the main building by a tunnel. That second rink was called Malá sportovní hala (Small Sports Hall) and still is today.
The Sports Hall was the main host of the World Champi-onships in 1972, 1978, 1985 and 1992. Czechoslovakian teams were successful on home ice, winning the gold me-dal twice, along with one silver and one bronze. During the 2015 World Championships, which will be played in Prague and Ostrava, Tisport Arena will be an official tra-ining centre.
In 1907, Strojnický palác was built in the Stromovka nei-ghbourhood of Prague, where exhibitions and expos were held. This tradition continued during the 1st Republic under the name “Prague Sample Expos”, which had a big inter-national importance and took place every year. But in 1948 they were moved to Brno and the big buildings on the fair-grounds in Prague were empty and not used for ages.
In December 1952 their reconstruction started, but there were problems with steel construction. The next plans were realized six years later and Sportovní hala (Sports Hall) was finally opened for the first time on March 7, 1962 for ice shows of the Czechoslovakian figure skating ensemble. On March 14, 1962, the national figure skating championships were held there, followed by Sparta's first hockey games in the arena that they still call home.
Dear participants of the tournament, Fans of youth ice hockey,
Let me welcome you to the 4th Annual Jan Marek Memorial. This takes place in honour of a former great forward, who left during his career a strong mark not only on Sparta, but also on other Czech and internati-onal clubs, and especially on the Czech national team. I am glad that this significant tournament carries Jan Marek's name, because through this we can remem-ber Jan’s legacy.
The Jan Marek Memorial was held for the first time in 2012 and I am glad for myself and for the whole hoc-key club HC Sparta Prague that this youth tournament has become an annual event. In its fourth year, thanks to the support of Sport Holdings Prague, the District of Prague 7, Prague Sportovní and ČEZ Inc., we have been able to organize best international tournament in the Czech Republic and I dare say also one of the most prestigious tournaments of its category in all of Europe.
I am very delighted that in 2012 we were able to continue the former Tournament of Academies, which had included two Czech teams along with one Austrian and two German. During the next three years, the addition of youth clubs from around Europe and overseas has made this a stable tournament with a resonant name, in which for the fourth time in row the prestigious Okanagan Hockey Academy will participate.
As with every job, organizing this event is a big effort which was put by all members of the organizational group and their helpers. A big thanks belongs to them for that. I hope that all organizers and fans enjoy the 4th Annual Jan Marek Memorial and see you next year at the 5th, as we continue the tradition of holding this event in honour of one humble and successful young man, who is and forever will be in our hearts.

Under his leadership and in cooperation with many former players who are now coaches throughout different age categories, Sparta won the award for The Best Academy of the CIHA for the 2013/2014 season. “The key criteria are results of youth teams in the U20, U18 and U16 categories, the number of players chosen to national teams in those age categories, and the league results of the men’s teams. Long-term, we are satisfied with all the academies, but in measurable areas Sparta was the best,” says Miroslav Přerost, leader of the academies project of the CIHA.
“We are glad that our academy was chosen as the best in our country. And for us it is also a commitment to continue on the path that we've set,” says Geffert. Before every season, the clubs have to make a request for the licence of CIHA Academy and fulfil its conditions. To clubs which succeed, the Association gives support in the areas of financial valuation of coaches, their professional education or cooperation with foreign partners. Teams of these clubs also do not descend from the top national youth leagues.
Sparta is one of six Czech clubs which, in the summer of 2011, was licensed by the Academy of the Czech Ice Hoc-key Association. In order to receive this license, potential candidates had to fulfil all conditions outlined by the CIHA. Sparta gripped the commission especially with a very good long-term training plan and its facilities, which include Tipsport Arena and use of a training centre in Podvinný mlýn in Prague. The only problematic area was the dressing rooms for the youth teams, so they were upgraded.
Due to the success of its operations, Sparta has high-qu-ality youth teams. An important aspect of this is also the club's cooperation with schools so that the players have more time for training and school. “It is important for every single player and for hockey as a whole. It is usual in all advanced countries excluding the post-Communist coun-tries. It has been neglected in our country. I do not agree with the deep-rooted stereotype that good hockey players aren't intelligent. I think that the more intelligent a person is, the better a hockey player he could be,” says Pavel Geffert, the head youth coach of HCS.

Jan Marek was born on December 31, 1979 in Jindřichův Hradec and first aroused public notice in junior hockey, when he made it to the national junior finals with local team Vajgar. Despite losing to Slavia Prague, the quick and smart forward had reason to celebrate when Alois Hadam-czik, former coach of HC Oceláři Třinec, chose him to join the Extraliga club.
After a few years of acclimatizing to professional hockey, his talent finally began to show through in the 2001/02 season, when he played in every regular season and playoff game, recording 44 points. However, that was nothing compared to what he would accomplish the following year. That season, he finished second overall in league scoring with 62 points, trailing only teammate Richard Král. As well, his 32 goals led the whole league!
After such a great year, Marek moved to Sparta in the summer of 2003, where he would once again play under coach Hadamczik. Midway through his second season in Prague, he suffered an unpleasant injury, but he overcame that and eventually got used to the hectic lifestyle of the Czech capital, along with his beloved girlfriend Lucie. He also became close friends with linemate Petr Ton, with whom Marek had good rapport both on and off the ice for three seasons.
Although the 2005/06 season did not proceed very smoo-thly, in Sparta became champions. The Jindřichův Hradec native led Sparta to success as the leading scorer of the whole league, while Ton led the league in goals, benefiting from Marek's great passing abilities.
At age 26, the shy and humble Marek went to play abroad for Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL. The first year was a dream, as he scored at a point-per-game pace and won the championship title. As he continued to produce over the next few seasons, he became one of the league's biggest stars and started attracting interest from other clubs.
May 2010 was a great month for Marek. He was named MVP of the previous KHL season and won the gold medal as a member of the Czech national at the World Champi-onships in Germany. In the quarter-final against Finland, he was perfect in the shootout, and also scored the shootout winner in the semi-final against Sweden.
But all of his success in hockey came second after his family. In July 2011, his and wife Lucie's son Jan Jr. was born. With this, he now desired to be home, and decided to play one last season in Russia, with Lokomotiv Yaro-slavl, before returning to Sparta at the end of the season. But it didn't happen. Marek was one of the victims of Yaroslavl tragedy on September 7, 2011. Fate intercepted his plans for the future. Sparta fans will never again see Jan Marek perform his magic under the roof of the arena in Holešovice, but his legacy lives on through the youth tournament, which was named in honour of this great hockey, the Jan Marek Memorial.
