KEITHMcMAHON

Good afternoon and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for this Bank Holiday Monday fixture with our near neighbours and good friends, Cray Wanderers.

I’d like to start by taking this opportunity to welcome Keith Bird and his Cray side to Sporting Club Thamesmead - I hope that you enjoy your short stay with us after braving the M25 and have a safe journey home.

Cray are one of the sides who dropped down from the Ryman Premier League last season, and they enjoyed their first win and, indeed, points of the new season last Tuesday night with a victory over Barkingside - we’re under no illusions what a tough game it will be today.

I was really pleased with our own performance last Tuesday as we saw off Waltham Abbey here with a 2-0 victory.

I thought that the whole side worked really, really hard. Waltham Abbey are not a bad side at all and, of course, had started with three successive wins

but, particularly in the second half, I just thought that we really wore them down.

Our performances continue to get better and better with each passing game and, although I know we’re only four games in, we’ve had two difficult away games too.

I thought that we could have won away to Sudbury and there was also Cheshunt. I’ve always said that if you can win your home games and average two points per game then you’ll be in pole position to win the league.

This year, we’ve set ourselves a target before the season started based on our successful campaign in this division two years ago.

So far, so good - as I say, if we can win the home games and pick up points away then I think that we will certainly

be there or thereabouts, and we have done that.

Waltham Abbey were a good side, though. They started the game brightly for the opening twenty-five minutes or so, but then we started to really battle well and to compete with them.

Obviously I was pleased with our goalscorers, and I think both Tyrus and Ashley really deserved their goals. But the bottom line on Tuesday was that it was a team performance that saw us through and it was one that we could all be pleased with.

Most of the players who were either injured or carrying knocks are also now back and knocking on the door of the team, so we’re almost at full strength which can only bode well.

Our big miss remains Derek Duncan, but we’re hoping that Derek will

be right back in contention before our next home league game next weekend when we welcome Needham Market on September 6th - which is also Non-League Day.

This weekend we, of course, turn our attentions to the FA Cup and a trip into the relative unknown as we visit Ryman Division One South side, South Park, based in Reigate.

We haven’t had the best record in the FA Cup as a club, but at this time of the year everybody involved is both hoping, and praying, that this will be our year.

Perhaps we can get far enough to draw a club from either League One or League Two - why can’t this be our year to be one of those thirty-two non-league sides who make it through to the First Round Proper

in November?

Finally, we dedicated last Tuesday’s win to dear Terry Luthwaite who was laid to rest that afternoon. It was a great win for him - we had told his wife Jean that we would do our best for him.

He was a great lad and a great character around us who loved the football club. It was a really sad time for us - we’re a big family club here and we had a big turnout at his funeral which was outstanding and shows what we’re all about.

It was icing on the cake for Terry to get the win that evening and I’m sure that smile looking down on us would have been as big as it ever was.

Enjoy the game,Keith

Good afternoon everyone - firstly, can I welcome the Cray Wanderers players, officials and supporters to our new home of Sporting Club Thamesmead. We hope you enjoy your time with us and wish you a safe journey home.

My notes have been written prior to the Bank Holiday weekend which I hope you’ve been enjoying - I also hope we came away with some points from Brentwood on Saturday afternoon.

Up until now we’ve had a decent start to our Ryman League Division One North campaign as we adjust to life back here after our year-long stint in the Premier. Last Tuesday night we beat a very good Waltham Abbey side 2-0 who, until then, had a one-hundred percent record to start the campaign.

This afternoon we welcome our old friends from Cray Wanderers. Our friendship goes back a long way when we were both in the Kent League.

Having been relegated together last season from the Ryman Premier, I’m sure that they, like ourselves, will be keen for a

swift return.

From what I have seen and from what I have heard so far, most teams can beat each other in this league which will surely make it a very tough league to get back out of - I’m sure we will give it our best shot, though.

I would like to welcome the new players to have joined us this summer - Michael Spencer, Farai Hallam, Josh James, Justin Ascheri, Mike Aziaya, Ross Murphy and Stuart Zanone who, of course, has made a return to the Mead.

My thanks go out to all of our supporters and sponsors as always and, in particular, to the Cooper family who continue to sponsor our Man of the Match awards.

Enjoy the game,Terry

May I welcome the directors, officials and players of Cray to our new home Sporting Club Thamesmead this Bank Holiday Monday, and I hope after your short stay and some refreshments you all have a safe journey home.

Here we are playing our sixth game already this afternoon having picked up eight points from the first four games - fingers crossed that we also picked up some more on Saturday at Brentwood.

I feel very encouraged so far when you take into consideration who we have faced and compare our results to last season. Today will be no different with Cray Wanderers arriving - they got off the mark with a win last Tuesday after a difficult start, but were relegated like us so will provide a tough encounter.

This weekend we start our FA Cup journey for the season by visiting South Park; a club that plays in the Ryman South and, to date, has started strongly in their league - once again it will be a very hard match.

I always personally enjoy visiting clubs that you may not have had the pleasure of playing in your own league in either the FA Cup or FA Trophy, and in all my experience it has always been the case that all the players involved in these matches are always up that bit more for cup matches due to this unique experience.

With that in mind, I can personally look forward to a sedentary sixty-minute drive to South Park at the weekend to join in

the experience.

Off the field having now moved to these fantastic facilities at the start of last season we can now at long last call the SCT our permanent home.

It took eight years of delays in building and, to be honest, it has taken a longer time than I expected to feel at home within the facilities, but I am sure it will happen in due course, especially as we have had nothing by admiration from all visiting teams on the facilities available so hopefully it will continue and put the club on the map.

During pre-season we’ve had our new website built, and I can report it is fully up and running. I’d like to thank Jack and John Callow for their help and continued assistance.

Hopefully anyone who visits the site will find much more information than before, as well as more frequent updates of news as and when it happens within the club.

Hopefully this will help us in trying to get more people through the gate to support Keith and the team. Another initiative we’re running is half price entrance to all games (excluding cup competitions) to fans of our neighbouring professional clubs, Charlton

and Millwall, when they’re away.I’ve also written to the management of local non-league clubs - Wellling, Dartford and Ebbsfleet - offering them a similar discount upon proof that they follow that team - let’s hope it has a positive effect on our gates.

If we are to run this club professionally we cannot rely always on the Directors supplying financial support.

I honestly believe that the only way we will get the local business world involved with this club in any way is that they are fully made aware of the great facilities that are here at SCT.

All of the facilities are here for the use of the community and their local club, Thamesmead Town.

Together with all of the youth and junior teams that play here at Bayliss Avenue, we all need their support - either as a sponsor, advertiser or even just as a business partner, and to achieve this I feel that I have to meet personally with these businesses face to face for it to work, so that campaign has started and will continue until I feel that I have exhausted the number of local businesses.

NON-LEAGUE DAY 2014THE MEAD V NEEDHAM MARKETSATURDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH

Our plans for Non-League Day 2014, our next home game here, are almost complete!

To remind you, non-league day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable, volunteer-led community football, whilst giving fans nationwide a chance to show support for their local non-league side.

Here at the Mead, we’re delighted to confirm that our local MP, Teresa Pearce, will be with us to enjoy the day. We also hope that as many of the Mead’s juniors who can be here will be, on the eve of their own season’s big kick-off.

However, the important part of Non-League Day is to show off the club’s product to those who pay a small fortune to follow their team. That’s why, if you know anyone who has a season ticket with a Premier League club, or a Championship club, you can let them know that we’re offering them a great deal!

Anyone whose team is away on Saturday 6th September will be welcome at the SCT simply by purchasing a commemorative, full-colour programme that will be priced at £3 - so let everyone know and let’s fill the SCT as much as we can!

FIXTURESNext Tuesday evening the Mead are currently scheduled to be making the short trip to Tilbury for our Ryman League Division One North clash.

However, this weekend Keith takes the side to Surrey where the Mead will face South Park in the first step to the FA Cup.

Should the game on Saturday end in a draw, the replay will be here next Tuesday evening instead at 7.45pm, and the Tilbury game will be moved back slightly - so please, bear that in mind.

Further, regardless of what the Mead do at South Park, should Tilbury draw their game away to Codicote at the weekend then Tuesday will still be off - if you’re unsure, check out the club’s website over the weekend and we’ll let you know exactly who we’re playing and when!

U21s APPEALOn page twenty-one of today’s programme, you can find full details of all of the Mead U21s fixture list, as well as a bit of a season preview with their manager, Andy Weeks.

The opening game of their campaign kicks off in two days’ time as they welcome Grays Athletic to the SCT this Wednesday, for a 7.45pm kick-off - if you’re free, then why not come down and give the lads some support?

Even better still, Andy and the boys are also in need of some additional assistance to help them on a matchday, particularly on the turnstiles.

Again, more in-depth details are available on page twenty-one, but if you’re interested in helping out in any way, shape or form, please get in touch with the manager Andy Weeks, on [email protected] - we’re sure anything you could offer will be most appreciated.

CRAYWANDERERS

Cray Wanderers, also relegated with the Mead a few months back, provide the opposition at the SCT this afternoon.

Keith Bird brings his Wands side to Bayliss Avenue today looking to build upon their first points of the campaign last Tuesday night.

Having finished a dismal campaign last time out with six straight defeats, before starting with three more successive losses and ten goals conceded to boot, Wands fans could have been forgiven for wondering when it would ever end.

But an emphatic 4-2 victory over Barkingside last Tuesday night sent relief throughout the Courage Stadium, thanks to two goals-apiece for Ian Daly and Pat O’Connor, lifting Bird’s men up to twentieth in this formulative league table.

With another home game a couple of days ago, Bird will be hoping that his side are arriving at the SCT with some momentum building as the club looks to rebuild on the pitch following a tough year in which the club lost thirty-four of their forty-six league games, never really threatening to mount a survival bid.

But Bird is in it for the long-haul, and has admitted that there is a five-year plan in place for a club that “needed a lot of work doing” upon his appointment just under a year ago.

“We came to the club as part of a five-year project to progress the club on and off the field,” Bird told the club’s website.

“We were disappointed to be relegated last season but the club means business in 2014/15 and we are aiming for a swift return to the Ryman Premier Division and hopefully to progress beyond that in the future.”

CLUB HISTORYThe 2012/13 season was a critical one for the future of Cray Wanderers FC, the oldest football club in London and the second oldest in the world.

The Wands have requested planning consent from Bromley Council to build a new football stadium at Sandy Lane, in St Paul’s Cray. Unfortunately for the Wands after nearly five years of hard work and expense their initial application was thrown out on 20 September when the LB Bromley planning committee said that the club’s plan for a new football ground and community sports complex in the Crays was insufficient good reason to allow development of a site that is designated as greenbelt.

Cray Wanderers have been in exile from the Crays since 1972 when they lost the Grassmeade ground in Chelsfield Road, due to housing development. They moved to Oxford Road, on the borders of Footscray and Sidcup, but when that ground was ruled to be unsuitable for Step 5 football (the Wands were then playing in the Kent League) it became necessary from 1998/99 to play first team matches at Hayes Lane, as tenants of Bromley FC.

Cray have been most grateful to Bromley FC for granting them the ground-sharing arrangement, but with the lease due to expire in 2014 the need for Cray to have their own home ground has become paramount.

The first origins of Cray Wanderers are linked to the construction of the London, Chatham & Dover railway line during 1858 to 1860. During their leisure time, migrant workers kicked a ball around, and that is how the club originated in the St Mary Cray village. The pitch at Star Lane is now a cemetery, and is located beneath the nine-arch railway viaduct that spans the Cray Valley. The industrial belt of the River Cray, especially the paper mills, provided much of the club’s support up till the 1950s.

Cray Wanderers were a strong force in senior county football at the turn of the century.

After being Kent Junior Cup semi-finalists and finalists in 1890/91 and 1891/92 they entered the first ever FA Amateur Cup competition in 1893/94. They had a spell as a professional club between 1895 and 1907. They were a nursery club for Woolwich Arsenal during part of this period. They were one of the founder members of the Kent League in 1894/95, and they won the championship in 1901/02. Other honours included Southern Suburban League champions in 1898/99, West Kent League champions in 1903/04, and Kent Senior Cup runners-up in 1899/1900.

After World War One, Cray switched to the London League where they remained till 1934. In 1930/31 they won the Kent Amateur Cup. Cray rejoined the Kent League in 1934/35, but their four year stay came to grief when 1936 saw the loss of the Fordcroft ground in Cray Avenue, their home since 1898. Cray were forced to drop into a lower level of football, drifting from one temporary pitch to another while the club committee dwindled to a perilously small number. The team struggled badly in the South London Alliance and the Kent Amateur League.

1951/52 heralded a new era, and an upturn in the club’s fortunes, when local businessman Mick Slater took over at the helm. The club was elected to the London League and regained its senior status. Cray moved to a new ground at Grassmeade in 1955. Their stay there was a very successful period in the club’s history. Drawing extra support from the commuter town of Orpington, they played in the London League and then the Aetolian League. They were three times crowned champions, won the League Cup twice, and also won the Kent Amateur Cup three times.

Cray switched to the semi-professional Metropolitan League for five seasons commencing in 1966/67. In 1971/72 the Met London League was created by a merger of the Metropolitan League and the Greater London League.

Cray moved to Oxford Road in 1973/74.

Johnny Biddle and Jimmy Wakeling proved to be successful managers. In 1974/75 Cray won the Met London League and League Cup, scoring 170 goals in all matches that season. In 1976/77 and 1977/78 Cray won the London Spartan League championship.

Cray decided to return to the Kent League in 1978/79. Success came quickly because Cray won the championship in 1980/81, having been runners-up the year before. Their powerful new team under manager Harry Richardson reached the FA Vase quarter-final and 5th round in those two seasons. After that, the 1980s decade brought only one more piece of silverware, the Kent League Cup in 1983/84. After finishing Kent League runners up in 1990/91, Cray had a lean period during most of the 1990s, with the exception of 1992/93 and the Kent Senior Trophy.

A new club chairman Gary Hillman arrived in 1994/95 and Ian Jenkins, a Cray player since 1993, was appointed manager in 1999. By now, Cray were tenants of Bromley FC. As champions of the Kent League in 2002/03 and 2003/04, also reaching the FA Vase quarter-final, they achieved promotion into the Ryman League Division One. Five years later at the end of season 2008/09 came further promotion into the Ryman Premier League.

After four years of establishing themselves in the Ryman Premier, the highest level of football that the club has played at since the war, Cray Wanderers are ambitious to continue their upward progress on the field. However, the club has suffered a setback in its plans following relegation last season. The victims included the long serving manager Ian Jenkins. But under the new management of Keith Bird and Mike Paye the Wands are taking steps forward again following the disappointment of last season.

The Club continues its fight off the field as it pursues a return to its homeland in the Crays, despite the setback from Bromley Council on 20 September 2012 when initial planning consent for a new ground was declined.

ALANWOODWARD

Good afternoon and welcome back to today’s game against Cray - a warm welcome to everyone visiting us this afternoon.

I have to start by saying what a nice buzz there has been around the place so far since the season started.

Training has been going well and the boys have been working hard and really putting a shift in - it’s been a good environment to be around.

Our game here last Tuesday evening against Waltham Abbey saw us come out victors with an excellent 2-0 win - and it was down to nothing more than hard graft and belief in one another. There were players putting their bodies on the line for the Mead cause which is always great to see.

Buddy was excellent in goal as he always is, showing just what a great goalkeeper he is. Both Faria and Lewis Tozer put in a really steady showing in the middle of defence, which spurred the midfield on to work tirelessly as they did for the whole ninety minutes.

With the three up front also causing non-stop havoc for the Abbott’s defence, it was a good team performance all-round.

There’s some fresh faces at the club who are champing at the bit to force their way into the Gaffer’s first team,

which gives him some selection headaches - but these are the kind of problems that he would welcome, I’m sure!

Adem Ramadan, Ross Murphy and Josh James are proving a major plus around the place and I firmly believe that things are already looking really bright for the future here at Bayliss Avenue.

On the injury front, the news is good and Derek Duncan ought to have resumed training during the past few days - albeit these notes are being written before the weekend’s trip to Brentwood.

Aside from him, there is just the usual bumps and knocks, but there is nothing to worry about.

Let’s keep on believing in the side and stay positive. It’s been a really excellent, positive start to the campaign so far and we want to keep that going. It may still be early days, but if we can remain upbeat, optimistic and keep on going then who knows where it may take us?

Probets, Gordon-Young

Tuesday 19th August 2014 | Ryman League Division One North | MOTM: Rob Budd

Mike Green reports

A goal in each half earned The Mead a hard fought victory over League leaders Waltham Abbey and maintained their unbeaten run as the Mead’s impressive start to the season continued.

With Abbey showing why they arrived at the SCT with a perfect record, the home side were indebted to keeper Rob Budd in the opening half as the keeper pulled off three excellent saves that ensured The Mead the half time lead. The goal itself came when Tyrus Gordon-Young bravely beat Abbey keeper James May to Faria Hallam’s long clearance out of defence to head home his third goal of the season from the edge of the box just before the break.

After the break, with Abbey still pressing and Budd and his defenders heroically at times defending the home goal, Probets showed his deadly accuracy with the dead ball as following a foul on Stuart Zanone, the left back clinically curled home a free kick from 25 yards past a statuesque May as the home side in the end deservedly took the points.

Abbey had won their first three games coming into this game and started brightly with Budd having to be at his alert best to deny James Peagram. Indeed it was the visitors who looked more likely to score in the opening stages as Peagram again and then Jason Hallett both went close. The closest the home team came was just past the half hour when a lunging Sean Roberts just couldn’t get the final touch in a goal mouth melee. Michael Spencer

(who missed the weekend draw with AFC Sudbury) found Ross Murphy, who’s first time cross was met by Zanone’s header, which was cleared off the line by Joe Kizzi and Roberts’ follow-up shot just didn’t have enough to be forced over the line and was gleefully grabbed by the grounded May.

The home side took then took the lead three minutes from half time when Gordon-Young bravely beat Abbey keeper May to Hallam’s long punt down, yet it was Budd himself who made certain that the Mead kept their lead at half time by making a stunning full length save away to his right to deny Hallett’s header on the stroke of the interval.

Abbey continued at the start of the second half as they began the first and in one incredible series bodies were left sprawled across the Mead box as the home goal somehow stayed intact. Budd then pulled

off another fine block when Hallett found space down the left only for the Mead keeper to stand his ground brilliantly.

With Zanone and Gordon-Young stretching the Abbey defence more and more, the home side doubled their lead just past the half way mark of the second half. Zanone’s forward charge was unfairly stopped 25 yards out, and up stepped Probets to curl the ball up and over the Abbey wall and into the bottom corner of the net with May motionless.

The visitors night was summed up moments later when Ben Bradbury had a free header sail over Budd’s bar and with it went the Abbey’s last chance as well as their unbeaten record. The Mead on the other hand still have theirs and have taken 8 points from their first four games as they prepare to head up the A12 on Saturday to face Brentwood Town.

Tyrus Gordon-Young netted his third of the season

KENTROUND-UPWith the first games of the new season now complete, our friends at KSN football review the early action.

And so that was the first two weeks of the Kent football season and the undoubted winners are Maidstone United and Margate who both boast 100 per cent records in the Ryman Premier League. Compare that start to our three sides in the Conference - so far not a win in sight for any of our three sides thus far! But that shouldn’t really worry messers Burman, Day and Kinnear just yet as Dartford, Dover and Welling are amongst a group of nine clubs (that include both Bristol Rovers and Grimsby) who didn’t secure a win in their opening three games. Down in Conference South, Ebbsfleet are already the only team with a one hundred percent record - and all that despite not playing on opening day due to the Salisbury fiasco. Wins over Concord and Havant have given Steve Brown’s side THE perfect start. Also on six points but with two wins and a defeat are Bromley who after winning their first two games were brought down to earth with a bump on matchday three with a 3-0 home defeat against Basingstoke. As we said at the top, in the Ryman Premier, Maidstone and Margate have

both one their opening four games to proudly sit at the top of the early table - Maidstone beating Hampton & Richmond in front of 1,473 in midweek, whilst Margate (in front of a 500 plus crowd at Hartsdown Park) beat East Thurrock United 3-1 to keep pace with the Stones. Elsewhere in the Division, Tonbridge have enjoyed two good home wins for new boss Steve McKimm but have been beaten in both their road games thus far, whilst last season’s North champions, VCD, its been a real baptism of fire as they’ve lost each of their first four games and are rock bottom - but they’re joined still pointless by perhaps surprisingly Hampton and Bognor Regis. To the north, the Mead have, as we know, have made an unbeaten start to their campaign to rebound straight back following last season’s relegation. The other relegated side from last season, Cray Wanderers broke thesir ducks last week with a 4-2 win over Barkingside to move off the bottom. The counties final side in the division, Chatham, have won both their home games - but thus far have only taken one point on their travels, but still seven points from the first four games isn’t a

bad start for Kevin Watson’s side. And from North to South, and with three of the top four places and five of the top nine filled by Kent sides, you could say that it hasn’t been a bad start. Sittingbourne are currently defying the odds as their new look side sit second a point in front of their near neighbours Faversham who are third. A point further back comes Neil Cugley’s Folkestone who are looking to go one place further than last years beaten Play Off finalists. Herne Bay come next after their first defeat of the season at Three Bridges in midweek - they’re seventh, and two places further down the table come the Bay’s near neighbours Whitstable and their new management team of the Ward brothers beginning to work their magic.

Sadly at the other end of the table, our other two teams have made disappointing starts - Hythe are 20th and will be disappointed that they’ve made as they’ve lost their opening two games at what is usually something of a Fortress Reachfields, whilst round the coast at Southwood, new boss Ramsgate Dean Hill will be looking to improve on a poor start which has seen three defeats in their opening four games.

MEAD MASTERMIND

Page 20: Thamesmead Town v Cray Wanderers
Page 21: Thamesmead Town v Cray Wanderers

The squad we have assembled looks to be well balanced in terms of all areas of the pitch.

We were due to have played two friendlies in the last week but unfortunately our opposition pulled out very late on for the second game. This left us with just the away game down at Whitstable to play. We went down to the game with a squad of 13 players. Not ideal when you have a squad of 22 to choose from but the injury/illness/working bug from last seasons away games seems to have reared it’s head!

We started the game well enough and appeared to be getting on top. Unfortunately an unforced error in our attcking third led to the home side taking the lead. We had pushed up for a corner and the player in possession trod on the ball and suddenly we were on the back foot! We played well enough to go in level at half time but a bit of anxiety meant that our chances were snatched at and inaccurate.

The second half was much of the same. We were close to dominating play Whitstable were always a threat on the break. We created some good chances and we had plenty of efforts from distance but we couldnt find a way through. In added on time we needlessly and carelessly gave the ball away on the half way line and the home side scored a second goal that was not only against the run of play but also put a nice gloss on teh result for the home side. We seem to be very close to gelling as a team but we continue to make silly errors that cost us - lets hope we get these all out of the way in pre-season and before next weeks competitive visit by Grays! Finally, if there is someone out there willing to donate a couple of hours of their time to help with turnstile duties for the U21s games, please make themselves known to the club or email me at [email protected] Cheers,Andy

MATCH OF THE DAYHAPPY FIFTIETH!Forget Peter Capaldi’s arrival as the Doctor this weekend, the main Saturday night television institution celebrates half a century of broadcasting - Mike Green looks back on some of those memories.

On BBC2 on Saturday 22nd August 1964, Kenneth Wolstenholme introduced highlights of a football match from Liverpool as a new show began a run which some thought wouldn’t last until the following May! Yet 50 League Champions, X Prime Ministers, X Popes, 50 League Champions and even a Moon Landing later, Match of the Day has always been there on a Saturday evening tucked away in the corner of the room. We’ve probably got all got our favourite moments from the show down the years - if honest mine both come from the 1980’s - Justin Fashanu’s incredible strike for Norwich against Liverpool which won Goal of the Season and had Barry Davies screaming “oh, oh, oh what a goal!” or even the day that current Hull boss Steve Bruce jokingly threw a balloon into the field of play before delivering the real thing for Charlton legend Colin Powell volleyed home at the back post for Gillingham against Fulham! But that’s what made Match of the Day - yes we had the top flight games but we even had believe it or not matches from outside the top flight too. In modern day scenarios I guess it would be like mixing MoTD and the Football League Show into one.

MoTD of course has made household names of all the presenters and commentators alike, and one of the greatest of all time made a return to the commentary box this weekend when Barry Davies took the mic at the London derby between Crystal Palace and West Ham - how both those teams have changed since Davies stepped off his last football gantry nearly a decade ago. We all have had our own favourites down the years - mine hands down was Davies - but then of course there were so many other greats. John Motson, the late great pair David Coleman and Kenneth Wolstenholme to the voices of today - Guy Mowbray, Steve Wilson and Simon Brotherton - we all have so many things to thank MoTD for - here’s for the next 50 years!!!

Ex-players seem to have found their way into the presenters chair and boy haven’t things come a long way from when Jimmy Hill and Bob Wilson sat behind a desk that looked like a church Pugh to today with Gary Lineker and his Saturday night pals sitting round the coffee table - yet still we get the same analysis wrapped up differently, but one part of the MoTD furniture wont be around this season, as the man who gave us the lines “You don’t win anything with kids!” and “shocking defending!” wont be at the party after hanging up the analytical genius that Alan Hansen became.

MAN OF THEMATCH

Once again, we’re delighted that the Cooper Family are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Each home game, the Man of the Match award will be presented to the winning player by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have once again been very kind as to sponsor the award.

They got on board last season with the award in the first half of the campaign and it proved to be a huge success - the whole team were even awarded the accolade after a resounding win over Maidstone!

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to the family for their continued support. We’ve listed the award winners from last season for this issue, but who will begin this season’s list this evening?

The award is presented in the Mead Lounge after the game, so why not hang around with us and congratulate the recipient for a fine performance?

THE CLEANSHEETCANCERCHALLENGEThe Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge is a new initiative that the Mead have adopted for the campaign.

The first team goalkeeper will wear a special pink kit and the idea is simple -

the goalkeeper will be sponsored to keep those all-important clean sheets.

You can either sponsor per clean sheet, or simply make a donation for the

complete season in one go.

Rob Budd, whose family unfortunately know all about this terrible disease,

explains: “It was a huge shock when my sister Emma first told the family, but

she fought the disease all the way for three years and was always so positive.

“I miss her every day and she was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she

touched everyone that came into her life.”

Do you want to help and do your own thing to raise some money?

Charlotte Cooper braved the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ earlier this

afternoon in aid of our appeal, with Buddy amongst those pouring the ice... we’re not sure if that’s called getting your own back or not,

but thank you so very much Charlotte! We’re sure that there might be some pictures in our next programme.

You can back the Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge by visiting www.justiving.com/cleansheet1 to donate today.

Alternatively, find a committee member on matchdays to sign a sponsorship form, or donate cash into the collection boxes all around the Mead Bar - they will be there all season long.

FOLLOW EDDIE’S MEAD CAB ON THE ROAD TO:

SOUTH PARKSaturday 30th August

Kick-Off: 3.00pm

Follow the M25 southbound all the way round to J8, where you take the first exit at the junction signposted Reigate and the A217.

Remain on the A217 until you find yourself in the one-way system, and as it splits to three lanes, move into the middle lane signposted for Gatwick, remaining on the A217 and continue to follow all signs for Gatwick and the A217.

Just after Sandhills Road, once you’ve come away from the town centre, turn right onto Park Lane. Once back amongst housing, turn left onto Sandcross Lane and, shortly afterwards, the turning for Whitehall Lane and the ground will be on your right - a diagonal-facing country lane.

NEXTHEREThe Mead return to action here at the SCT next weekend for Non-League Day, and Needham Market on September 6th.

Having dispatched of the previous league leaders holding a one-hundred percent record in Waltham Abbey last Tuesday night, life back in the Ryman League Division One North doesn’t look like getting any easier for the Mead.

Indeed, the next side to visit here is Mark Morsley’s Needham Market who, like the Abbotts gone before them, still hold a one-hundred percent record - unless they failed to win on Saturday, of course.

With four wins from four and a fairly expensively-assembled squad, the Suffolk side will be hoping that this is the year they can finally go one better and make their way into the Ryman Premier League.

“Every team’s aim is to win the league but last season our ultimate aim was the play-offs and this season is about going up,” Morsley told the local press, after a year in which a whole new squad was assembled.

“As a football club we have got to start moving forward, but I think we’re in a good place.”

The Marketmen travel to Sporting Club Thamesmead next Saturday 6th September for a 3pm kick-off - we hope to see you here.
