Tony Molina - Dissed and Dissmissed M.W.A

Jeremy Malvin A.K.A Brooklyn producer Chrome Sparks delighted us with his 3rd solo release Goddess back in April this year. Exploring similar terrain to his previous self-titled EP, Chrome Sparks makes good use of intricate drum-like clicks and claps, arpeggiating synths and soundtack-esque sampling to create a landscape of emotive electronic music. If you're a fan of Flume, Mount Kimbie, Bonobo and the like, you'll love this! C h r o m e S p a r k s – G o d d e s s W.H

Sleaford Mods - Divide and Exit

M.W.A

Although only recently released in the UK, we lucky few at the 191 got a sneak-peak of Oscar & The Wolf's album earlier this year. Although the name would suggest a hipster reincarnation of Mumford and Sons the band is made up of Brussels-based-bedroom-beatmaker, Max Colombie joined by Leo Abrahams whose worked with the likes of Brian Eno and Jon Hopkins. Sounding like a less experimental, Belgian James Blake, 'Entity' has a seductive electro-R'n'B production to it that would have complimented any Ashanti release from 2002 perfectly. Songs like 'Strange Entity' combine alluring plucked guitar tones with 808 kicks and clicks that sit nicely between Colombie's multi-layered vocal harmonies. Lyrically the whole album is drenched in a reverb of cool from the lustful 'I can make you undress' of the rightly named 'Undress' to the provocative satire of 'Somebody Wants You'. It isn't all chauvinistic anecdotes though, 'Bloom (Oh My Baby)' gives the previously mentioned tracks an oxymoronic look into the emotional soul of Colombie, giving you a real sense of how his once childish confidence has now turned to hollow hopelessness. Before the year ends, give this album a spin! Oscar & The Wolf – Entity W.H

COOLEST NEW BUSINESS OF ‘14

Ok so a little business situated on a

pretty bleak road aptly named – Queens Road in Southend-on-Sea.

This little gem is a real diamond. Not too small that your group of music lovers has to go in one-by-one and not too big that the owner has no

idea what they’ve got or where the hell it is!

This shop sells everything predominately vinyl based from used collectables, to latest acts.

Not to mention they have the fortune of lovely neighbours who are happy for them to do in-store performances. Great place to hear the tracks intimately and to see your everyday Joe

walk in with his own mug of tea – as witnessed. Look for this ->

… Over the past 10years-ish we’ve all enjoyed it but it’s

been killed, like all good things in the industry it’s been

squeezed and throttled into the masses and now you get

the feeling that John ‘I don’t know what I like’ Bloggs

goes for the “experience.” People are now buying Kurt

Cobain Tee’s in Primark, to go to a show, get leathered

at the bar downstairs to leave and claim for it to be the

most epic or glorious show evaaar. Or is it just the music

taste changing again and service will be shortly resumed?

… Just a thought

So it’s on the change again but should we be

scared? We’ve been revisiting a period in

music reminiscent of the 60’s Cavern Club or the Dr. Feelgood pub scene int

imacy but now

the venues are going or being bought. Over

the last five years or so – Astoria – gone,

The 100 Club – Under threat, Leeds Cockpit –

Going, The Peel – Gone.

BEST  SINGLES  OF    ‘14

I'm so pleased that this Eagle (Julian) dared to fly

this low. It's eyes to the back of your head, muscle

contracting stuff that sounds like

The Strokes having a Stroke.

Julian Casablancas and the voidz -Where no eagles

fly M.W.A

Shura's released some great tracks over the last couple of years

collaborating with DJ Hiatus but finally going solo with her single 'Touch'.

The song has a very chilled, slo-mo feel thats production has the power to

put you in the drivers seat of the Ferrari from the 1986 Sega classic 'Out

Run'. The lyrics are simple but extremely poignant “There's a love between

us but something's changed and I don't know why” I'm sure anyone who's

ever been blind-sided by an ex on a night out can relate to this. Shura's

vocals echo 'and all I want to do is go home with you, but I know I’m out of

my mind.’ Lyrics and production aside – if you can spare an extra five

minutes before procrastinating further into your day check out the music

video too, it's basically a sleek, coloured elaboration of that 'First Kiss' viral

ad we saw from WREN earlier in the year, but don't worry this one's

actually worth watching. Shura herself (along with friends) all took part in

recording the videos sensual girl-on-guy, guy-on-guy, girl-on-girl kissing

that further encompasses the narrative of the song.

Shura – Touch W.H

“Dun.. Dun. Dun, DunDunDun…” This bass phrase sold the song from the first listen and then when those ominous vocals kicked, you had to own the single. Yeah it has about 5 parts in total but its okay, it’s Jamie XX it’s well crafted. JAMIE XX – Girl
