Biography

Lorna Tee Head of Festival Management

A film producer who specialises in regional and international co‐productions of high‐quality and award‐winning feature films which are also commercially distributed worldwide, Tee is also an international film festival consultant. She works closely with many leading film festivals and international film bodies on strategy, management, PR, education and training and partnership initiatives. In 2006 she launched the first Asian Film Awards, bringing films and filmmakers from across Asia together at one awards event for the first time. Alongside her ongoing work as a producer, from 2008 to 2014, she acted as an advisory board member for the Asian Film Market at Busan and since 2007 she has been an advisory board member for Cinemart, the oldest and most respected coproduction market for feature films. She has been a member of the Berlinale selection committee since 2010 and is currently Festival Director of Cinemasia Film Festival, the biggest pan Asian film festival in the Netherlands. Amongst her credits as an award‐winning producer/co‐producer are James Lee’s The Beautiful Washing Machine, Robin Lee’s The Shoe Fairy, Ho Yuhang’s Rain Dogs, At the End of Daybreak and Mrs K, Lee Yoon‐ki’s Come Rain, Come Shine and Edwin’s Postcards from the Zoo. Tee has served as jury member, mentor, advisor and panellist at countless international film festivals and events, most recently including Berlinale Talents, the BFI London Film Festival Competition Jury, Venice Biennale College, Bridging the Dragon/EFM and the QCinema International Film Festival in the Philippines.

Quote This is Asia’s time. Over the past few years, consumerism has catapulted the Asian market into international renown, but what we are now experiencing is the renaissance of culture as inspired by the Asian communities. As an Indian director, I’m excited to be chairing the International Film Festival & Awards • Macao as Indian storytelling has so much in common with Chinese forms of storytelling. Hopefully these new forms of storytelling will bring the world to a better understanding of itself. Biography Shekhar Kapur is an Indian film director, producer and storyteller. His directorial debut with cult Bollywood film Masoom won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie of the year while Mr. India was declared one of the ‘100 Greatest Indian Films of All Time’ on the centenary of Indian cinema. He’s also made several documentaries and short films. Shekhar gained global recognition with the film Bandit Queen, a biopic of Indian bandit and politician Phoolan Devi, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie and Best Direction for that year. Premiering in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, the film caused a furore, catapulting Kapur into international success. Kapur introduced Cate Blanchett to the world in his two historical biopics of Queen Elizabeth, which were nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Film, and won 2; also winning 5 BAFTA Awards, including Best Film, between them. Kapur co‐created the hit West‐end show Bombay Dreams with Andrew Lloyd Webber and has been the recipient of the Indian National Film Award, the BAFTA Award, the National Board of Review Award, and three Filmfare Awards. In 2010, he served as one of the Jury Members (International Competition) at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. He’s also been on the jury of the London Film Festival, the Tokyo Film Festival, and was one of the sponsors of the International Indian Film Festival in Goa. Aside from his professional work in film, Kapur is one of India’s foremost activists on environmental and water sustainability issues. He is also a digital media entrepreneur, founding ‘Qyuki,’ one of India’s most successful online platforms for young Indian creators. Kapur is now directing and producing a captivating series exploring the trials and tribulations, temptations and brilliance of the young genius, Will Shakespeare, for an American broadcaster. He remains ever inspired by the world around him.

Athina Rachel Tsangari Athina Rachel Tsangari is a Greek filmmaker and projection designer who has worked on projects such as the 2004 Olympic Games. Athina Rachel Tsangari’s introduction to cinema came by a happy accident: while visiting Austin, Texas, she fell into a small role in Richard Linklater’s seminal film Slacker (1991), right before entering NYU's Performance Studies M.A. program. She studied film directing at the University of Texas. Her first feature The Slow Business of Going (2001) was nominated for Golden Alexander of Thessaloniki Film Festival. She was invited to serve as the projections designer and video director for the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics for its extraordinary opening and closing ceremonies, and has been working as a projections designer ever since, in parallel with her work in cinema. Her second feature Attenberg (2010) premiered in main competition at the Venice Film Festival. It won more than a dozen best film awards at festivals worldwide. Her third feature Chevalier (2015) had international premieres at the Locarno, Toronto, and NewYork film festivals to great critical acclaim, won Best Film at the BFI‐London Film Festival 2015. For over ten years she has operated Haos Film, a pioneering filmmaker‐run production & postproduction studio based in Athens. Among her credits as a producer are three films directed by Yorgos Lanthimos — Kinetta (2005), Dogtooth (2009, Un Certain Regard prize winner at Cannes), and Alps (2011), along with a variety of debut films by rising young directors. She was also co‐producer on Richard Linklater's Before Midnight (2013), filmed in Messinia, Greece — wherein she also appeared as an actress. She was one of 70 directors invited by the Venice Film Festival on its 70 years anniversary to participate in its project "Venezia 70 ‐ Future Reloaded" for which she made a short science fiction film, 24 Frames Per Century (2013). She was a jury member at the 2013 Berlinale, headed by Wong Kar‐Wai, and a jury

president at the 2016 BFI London Film Festival.

Makiko Watanabe Makiko Watanabe was born in 1968 in Tokyo, Japan. She is an actress and writer and has appeared in more than sixty films since 1996, known for Love Exposure (2008), M/Other (1999) and Still the Water (2014). Talent Ambassador Jang Keun Suk, Talent Ambassador Jang Keun Suk is a Korean actor. At five years old, he made his debut as a childrenswear model. He made a name for himself after appearing in several dramas: “Nonstop,” “Hwang Jin Yi, “Hong Gil Dong,” “He’s Beautiful,” and Mary Stayed Out All Night.” These dramas were huge hits. Thus he received a lot of attention from overseas fans as well as Korean fans. He has also released records and albums in Japan as a singer. Dante Ferretti The three Academy Awards, the first in 2005 for Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, the second in 2008 for Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, and the third for Scorsese’s Hugo, arrived after fifteen years of nominations, have represented for Dante Ferretti a true recognition both in Hollywood and world cinema. In fact, together with set decorator Francesca Lo Schiavo

(who has worked beside him since Liliana Cavani’s The Skin in 1981), he has given shape to Fellini’s dreams and actualised the ideas of directors such as Scorsese, Burton, Cavani, Marco Ferreri and Terry Gilliam. The 16 Oscars nominations have added to his haul of prizes from around the world, among others, three BAFTA Awards and four David di Donatello Awards. The Italian press has honoured him with 12 Silver Ribbons over almost 25 years—from Fellini’s City of Women (1980), And the Ship Sails On (1984), Ginger and Fred (1986), to the triumph of The Name of the Rose (1987), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1990), The Age of the Innocence (1994), Interview with the Vampire(1995), Casino(1997), Bringing Out the Dead and Titus (2000), Gangs of New York(2003), to the Special Ribbon Award for The Aviator (2006) as well as for The Black Dahlia (2007). His love for the set was born at the age of 13, watching the peplum and great Hollywood films such as Henry Kostner’s The Robe. Ferretti once said, “When I heard the word production designer, I was thunderstruck.” Born in Macerata in 1943, he started his career in 1969 with Medea by Pier Paolo Pasolini. He was one of Fellini’s most faithful collaborators, with whom he had worked on six films. Whilst recalling his collaborations with many great auteurs—among them, Bellocchio, Scola, Ferreri, Zeffirelli, Ferretti has many times underlined that he has learnt a lot from all of them. “According to Fellini I was meant to become an actor, I tried to be like him, he taught me to tell lies; whereas Pasolini had led me, in the eight films created together, to become acquainted with the whole of his world.” In the mid‐1980s, Ferretti began working on international sets. It is in 1986 when he collaborated with director Jean‐Jacques Annaud on The Name of the Rose, which was adapted from Umberto Eco’s novel of the same name. In 1989 and 1990, together with Francesca Lo Schiavo, he received two Oscars nominations for The Adventures of Baron Munchausenby Terry Gilliam and Amleto by Franco Zeffirelli. He made his debut in Hollywood with Martin Scorsese, whom he had met a few years earlier on the set of Fellini’s film, City of Women. Later, the production designer became one of Scorsese’s indispensable collaborators in eight films, including The Age of the Innocence, Shutter Island and Hugo—the first film in 3D for the cineaste. Once again, with Schiavo working alongside him, they were awarded the prestigious SNGCI’s Pietro Bianchi Award. “All my successes also belong to her (Schiavo) who, in spite of the goals achieved together, has always made me keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. She is a decorator of great talent and exquisite taste for the details. This is why perfectionist directors like Martin Scorsese adores her. I will not pay her any further compliments as the prizes she has been awarded speak for themselves.” Among other challenges, Ferretti was entrusted with designing Cinecittà World in Rome—the first Italian theme park dedicated to cinema, which represents a synthesis between culture, cinema and entertainment. Furthermore, Dante Ferretti was also involved with establishing the new Museum of Federico Fellini in Rimini.

CROUCHING TIGERS PROJECT LAB A CO‐PRODUCTION INITIATIVE

Crouching Tigers Project Lab: A New Place to Connect East and West Film Projects and Experiences The Crouching Tigers Project Lab, a new destination for industry professionals looking for original opportunities for co‐production and co‐financing of their film projects, will take place during

the 1st International Film Festival & Awards‧Macao. The Lab will be a key part of the Industry office of the Festival, which runs from December 8‐13, 2016.

The Crouching Tigers Project Lab has been conceived around three structured concepts:

Exciting and innovative perspectives on the integration of Asian and non‐Asian elements in film script and production.

A special focus on genre cinema, including both its classic forms and contemporary trends originated by new technologies and formats.

Effective networking, designed to foster lasting creative collaborations and coproduction partnerships.

Over the course from December 9 – 11, and through one‐on‐one meeting sessions, consulting services, workshops and panels, the Crouching Tigers Project Lab will provide an ideal opportunity to establish significant connections between seasoned industry professionals from the East and the West in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The Crouching Tigers Project Lab is an IFFAM initiative in partnership with the Sitges Festival (Spain), the Blood Window Lab at Ventana Sur Market (Argentina), the Frontières Lab (Canada). BFI Academy Project

A partnership project between IFFAM and British Film Institute (BFI). The programme is a 6‐days film making experience in the run‐up to the IFFAM. Twelve of the Macao’s most promising young filmmakers will participate in this one week course in which they will work as part of a

The 1st International Film Festival Awards・Macao (IFFAM) is hosted by the Macao Government

Tourism Office (MGTO) and Macau Films & Television Productions and Culture Association (MFTPA). The

aim of this festival is to raise the awareness and promote Chinese‐language films via Macau. eSpark

welcomes all the graphic designers to interpret film culture in an artistic way.
