INTRODUCTION One day, while sitting in a caf dicussing about the new topic of our project, we suddenly saw an old green Vespa running across the street. After that, everyone in our group took interested in the old Vespa so we decided to do a research in that classic motor. However, our parents and other people said that they dont like. Why dont they like such a beautiful motor like Vespa? To solve this question, we would like to discuss about its advantages and disadvantages, therefore, we chose the advantages and disadvantages of the old Vespa in Hanoi as our project topic. With their own characters, whether, it is more and more popular or not, in my report, wed also like to mention Vespa markets trend in 2007.

In general, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the Hanoi old Vespa?

Vespa is like coffee, if you drink it more and more, you will be addicted. Moreover, its not only high-grade coffee but also a beautiful woman in a colorful dress. For this reason, it requires you much patience and indulgence to choose a good vespa.

As we asked Long an addicted vespa man about his hobby, he said Im now a serious vespa addict. If I see a vespa driven in front of me, I will run after him until I know exactly its source. I will feel very happy if that vespa is worse than mine, on contrary, if it is better, I just want to kill the rider (smile) Its cruel, but thats me!

I. The history and vicissitudes wheel of the classic Vespa. Many people say that, in an experiment of a new motorbike, when hearing the sound of the engine and realizing that the back saddle was bigger than the front, Enrico Piaggio uttered: It looks like a painting cow (Vespa), and then, the first vespa was born. Its a legend of the two-wheeler which becomes one of the most popular symbol of Italy.

According to the collecting information from Vespa club in Ho Chi Minh city, a full-fledged vespa was born in 1946, but it was sent to Vietnam in 1953 by the French, and then these luxurious motors became one of the most popular motorbikes for the sophisticated middle-strata and upper-strata at that time. The first Vespa in Vietnam was called Acma. Nowadays, the Acmas in Vietnam are very rare, and it costs a lot to have one Acma. There are many types of Acma, but the Acmas in Vietnam are mainly of the 1953 - 1957 type; among them, the Acma GS, which is like a sport motor modified in various ways, is the most valuable. After Acma is Standard, which was produced from 1958 to 1963; and after the Standard were the Supers and the Sprints. These 2 types of vespa were paralle published from 1964 to 1972. The Sprints were born after the Supers a few years later with the sinewy shape. People who like to ride Vespa arrange them in order of years and prices in turn as: Acma, Standard, Super and Sprint

The areas where Vespa movement is strongly developing in Vietnam are: Ho Chi Minh city, Can Tho, Dong Nai, Vung Tau, Da Lat, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Hue, Quy Nhon, Ha Noi and Hai Phong.

1.1 Vespa or unique performance ?! After doing survey conducted among 50 students at the age of 18-20 about the advandtages and disadvantages of the Hanoi old Vespa, we classified the advantages and found out that the first standard of choosing a Vespa is that it shows their own characteristic

58% of the people whom we asked said that the biggest advantage of vespa was to show its owners unique personality. 38% of them said that driving Vespa was fashionable and just 28% of unique appearance, besides, only 10% of the people like Vespa because of its cheap price.

1.2 Why do they think like Vespa? Being no way inferior to the new model scooters like Honda @, Dylan or even SH, the classic Vespas have appeared valiantly more and more on almost streets in the city. The ancient and classic beauty of the vespa makes many people have a passion for it. They try to find an old Vespa Acma or even a Vespa Standard at any cost, in everywhere, from cities to countryside. If we talk about the old design standard of the Vespas, we will see that not any new engine stroke motors can be compared with the vespas. Vespa (which means bee) was considered as the pride of Italy and symbol of European romance. The common psychology of almost vespa owners is the feeling of satisfaction when knowing that driving vespa makes them more street-wise and unique. In comparison with Spacy, Avenis or Honda @, the old Vespas are much cheaper but more stylish. Many people think that it will be better if you wear street-style clothes why driving vespa because it will show clearly your strong characteristic and your own style.

While searching about the feeling of the vespa owners, we asked Ngan a reporter and she answered It is so interesting to ride a classic vespa. When you drive a motor like that, you will feel more elegant and special. Mr.Thang, an admin of Vespa forum added A person who owns a Vespa must be very proud of keeping in their hand the colours of time the olden times beauty which many people nowadays wish to have. Before being modified, the classic Vespa is very cheap. A Sprint just costs 10 million VND, and a native Acma is just 4 million VND. Standard with a good engine has a price of 1.000 (USD), and a Lambretta Lisire3 costs 9 million VND. The accessories for those beautiful Vespas are not too difficult to find; you can book them in Ho Chi Minh city or spend a little time going to the black market to find. Their prices arent expensive so you can buy as many as you want. If there are any problems with your Vespa, you can bring it to 33 Lang street, Thai Phien, Phu Doan, Han Thuyen or Cat Linh street to repair. Nowadays, the experiences of using and maintaining vespa are more popular, thats why Vespa players feel more secure when riding their beauty Today, more and more people are interested in Vespa not only because of its beauty but also its sound of the engine and the exhaust pipe. In the Vespa world, there are two kinds of style: the conservative style and the open-minded style. The conservative style persons keep their vespas in the original beauty. If they buy a rotten vespa, they will just bring it to the Vespa maintenance garages to change the skin. Some confident Vespa players of the conservative style said that if the engine of the Vespa sound smoothly like Honda @ or SH, it wouldnt be Vespa anymore. Therefore, the noisy of the exhaust pipe arouses more inspiration to the Vespa owners. According to the Vespa players, today the Acmas 1954 is a kind of Vespa that they like the most. They believe that it is charming because of its sour and scornful shape and the melodious engine sound. However, to buy an Acma is so difficult because its rare while Vespa players hunt it down frantically to show their unique characteristic.

a. The advantage which is easily seen is that the vespas gloveboxes are very big and separated from the exhaust pipe so they prevent your legs from being burned by that hot pipe.

b. If there is a heavy rain while youre driving vespa, you wont be worried about the dirty mud because of its big head frame.

c. You will be more confident to wear dress or skirt when driving that beauty motor than any other motorbike like Honda Dream, Harley..etc. Moreover, sitting in the vespa saddle is like sitting on the armchair.d. Different from other motors, Vespa is an amphibious motor. While the other motors owners get stuck in the street pool with their broken motors engine, Vespa players are still exquisitely driving without any fear.

e. The distance between the head and the saddle of Vespa are large enough to put in there a small elephant.f. Vespas wheels is small ( the moment force is high ( we can go faster. When you are stuck in a pot-hole, it will be easier to breat out of it if you drive a vespa than any other motobikes.

g. The frame of Vespa is big and plain so it will be easier to wash, paint or decorate. Moreover, vespa is very beautiful and realizable so its not difficult for you to find your vespa if you put it into a crowded parking place.

Vespa has many advantages, but why do many people dont like Vespa? Because of its shapes or its dirty smoke(?). We did a research to find out what the reasons are, and came to the answer about its disadvantages.2. Disadvantages

To play a Vespa, you must have a fate with it and understand the personality of Vespa like your own characteristic. Most of the Vespas have weak engines, thus, if you dont understand it, you will be very confused when meeting troubles with your Vespa while riding it. According to the survey which we conducted among 50 students who are using vespa, 64% of them said that their Vespa often breaks down and its a big problem and the biggest disadvantages.

There are also some others disadvantages that we summarized from the survey. Among them, there are 32% of the students said that its difficult to drive; if you dont have knowledge of Vespa, you couldnt drive it. The percentage of people who thought Vespa is noisy and polluted is equal. They explained that the sound of the exhaust pipe is so loud and the smoke comes from its pipe is polluted. For those reason above, some Vespa players said: there are more and more people like riding Vespa nowadays because of its beauty. The weak point is that it exhausts a lot of smoke because of the old engine. However, for the Vespa player, its a normal thing. Another people added that the louder the sound of the exhaust pipe is, the more stately the owners feels. Its stately when you use old Vespa but it also means that you must be good at finance. You may look imposing when riding it, but to be a real Vespa player, you must have a big sum of money for repairing or modifying it. You have to spent thousands dollars for a Vespa on average if you want it look beautiful and charming. We asked Mr. Nguyen Tri an owner of 10 old Vespas and a showroom which is placed on Hai Ba Trung street - about the money which was spent on a Vespa. Some Vespas have to be modified from A to Z, and it lasts about 7 to 8 months to complete modifying them. The toys for them may costs 2/3 the value of a Vespa. If you want to buy one of those Vespas, you may pay approximately 100 million VND for it he answered. In addition, Vespa uses a lot of gasoline and oil while oil and gas prices are not cheap. Supposing that you have two old Vespa, it uses fuel as much as a heavy drinker drinks wine Our group had a search to the history of the Vespa in Hanoi and Viet nam in the past, and we investigated that one reason (also a disadvantage) why Vespa wasnt used much from the 1970s to 1980s

From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, Vespa was rarely driven. This time was a difficult time for Vietnam because gasolines price rose higher and higher while one vespa used too much gas, thats why almost all vespa players had to keep their favourite at home until they became scrap iron. At that time, motor market was full of bikes made in Japan and they forgot about vespa, thus, vespa repairers changed to fix the Honda motors instead of vespa.

In the late 1980s, when the Vietnameses pace of life got better, the Vespa players remembered the aristocratic and connoisseur time at which they had driven their vespa around the city with pride on their face, therefore, they repaired their favourite again to use. However, that time didnt last long because thousands of motors made in China had been imported to Viet Nam since then; and once again, vespa was sunk among large number of others motors. The biggest disadvantage of Vespa, which we have already mentioned, is that Vespa often breaks down. For the experienced Vespa player, its not a big problem but for people who have just used Vespa, its really a big trouble for them.

For the girls who like Vespa, its extremely risky to ride that beauty. In comparison with boys, girls are disadvantageous in Vespa. Because before using Vespa, females used to drive a normal motor of which ambraya is automatic; so when they want to reduce speed they just need to lower the gas. On contrary, when using Vespa, if they want to reduce speed, they have to put the brake on ambraya. Therefore, if they dont know much about Vespa, they may meet that trouble again and again.

We have a meet with Thu Ha a member of Hanoi Vespa club, she said To use Vespa, I have to learn how to repair the usual trouble of it such as disassembling and re-assembling, cleaning bugi .etc. Ken another member of Hanoi Vespa club added I know a little bit how to repair Vespa. Once I riding it, its back wheel broke off. I would die at that time if I drive fast

Another disadvantage of vespa is its electric lock. If you dont know how to lock it right, you can have some problems with it. The electric lock of Vespa is a black lock which is placed inside the glovebox. The eclectric lock is use to prevent Vespa from the robbers, so if you dont open the electric box, you cant start the engine. In contrast, if you leave your Vespa without lock it by the engine lock, your Vespa can be easily stolen.

III. The trend of the Hanoi old Vespa

Considered as a symbol of Italy, a symbol of European romance and the icon of the young people, Vespa is a successful brand in the commercial history: more than 15 million Vespas have been sold in 50 years. Especially, the Vespas which were produced before 1960 were called the old Vespa or the classic Vespa. Although that Vespas are old and obsolete, they are hunted down by the young people and are considered a vogue of the youth. Overcoming lots of obstacles, Vespas are still being kept in their owners heart with an indulgence of the classic Vespa

For that reason, the old Vespa market is developing day by day. More and more people have yielded to it because of its charming beauty and its style. Therefore, we could say the old Vespa is one of the potential export articles for Vietnam.

In recent years, the old Vespa movement in Hanoi has become a phenomenom or a trend for the youth. Vespa players established a club for those who love riding the classic Vespa. Each members has their own characteristic, however, the common thing between them is the indulgence for the old Vespa.

IV. Conclusion

After our research about the advantages and disadvantages of the Hanoi old Vespa in Hanoi in 2007, we come to the conclusion that Vespa still be a motor fashion trend in 2008.

Many advantages of Vespa as its fashionable or unique will attract many young people to choose Vespa as their transport. In addition, nowadays, the young think that the exhaust pipes sound and its smoke show the real classic Vespa so they become to love them more and more. Sometimes, they try to solve those disadvantages so adults will have a better view about it.

In conclusion, Vespa has disadvantages that are in being parallel with the advantages. It may accidentally make the user confused while driving or it annoys other people nearby by its smoke and noise. However, for the Vietnam Vespa players in general and the Hanoi Vespa player in particular, its the Vespa culture and they love all of the disadvantages as well as advantages. The trend of Vespa in the future may not develop as much as today but there is a group of people who have indulgence with Vespa and consider Vespa an unending passion.
