Firework Safety

As we celebrate the 234th birthday of our great nation, please remember not

everyone likes fireworks. They can be annoying, especially to pets. Think about

your pet. Animals have sensitive ears and can be extremely frightened or stressed

when fireworks explode. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they’ll run loose

or get injured. The recreational use of fireworks in the City of Tampa is illegal.

Prevention of their use can only be enforced by the City of Tampa Police Depart-

ment. The Arbor Greene CDD does not have police enforcement authorization. If

you need police enforcement, please call the police non-emergency number 231-

6130. If you use fireworks, please follow these safety tips:

- Use common sense when using fireworks. Spectators should keep a safe distance

from the shooter. Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even in jest. Fire-

works have been known to backfire or shoot in the wrong direction.

- Point fireworks away from homes, brush, leaves and other flammable sub-

stances.

- Buy only legal fireworks (legal fireworks have a label with the manufacturer’s name and directions; illegal ones

are unlabeled), and store them in a cool, dry place.

- Kids should never play with fireworks. Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of

any type. Sparklers can reach 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.

- Do not ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives; they can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire

or police department in your community.

- Light one firework at a time. Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 20 minutes and then soak it in water).

- Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter or combine them.

- Use fireworks outdoors only.

- Always have water handy (a hose or bucket). Soak all fireworks in water before throwing them in the trash can.

- Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated” shooter.

Please be safe and enjoy your 4th of July!!

Trimming of Street Trees -

Please make sure your street

trees are trimmed according

to Arbor Greene policy. Un-

der Article XII, Section 1 of

the Arbor Greene Covenants,

the individual homeowner is

responsible for the trimming

and maintenance of the street

trees in front of their home.

Branches must be trimmed so

there is seven feet clearance over the sidewalk.

Branches must also be trimmed away from the

streetlights to avoid damage during high winds and

on the street-side of the tree to allow for vehicles to

pass without being struck by over hanging

branches. Your cooperation in keeping the streets

and sidewalks accessible for everyone is appreci-

ated.

Foreclosed/Abandoned

Properties - Due to the

increase in foreclosures

and abandoned properties,

many of our neighbor-

hoods have homes with

lawns and pools in very

bad condition. If anyone

knows of a property in this

condition, please let the Arbor Greene Homeowners

Association know of the address as soon as possible

so action may be taken if needed.

Please contact Jeff Couturier, Ameri-Tech Property

Management at 813-968-8008 ext: 102, or email: [email protected].

Reminder: All changes to the

exterior of your home must be

submitted to the Design Review

Board via an Alteration Applica-

tion, and approved before any

work is begun. Failure to comply

may result in fines or legal action.

For a copy of the Alteration Ap-

plication, please visit www.arborgreene.org, click

Hurricane Preparation

The Central Florida Hurricane

Center is bracing for an above-

average hurricane season. Offi-

cials predict about eight hurri-

canes will form from now to No-

vember, four being major. Here are some things to pre-

pare for this Hurricane season:

- Do you have a home inventory; pictures or video?

- Do you have an evacuation plan? Contact the

American Red Cross for shelter locations.

- Do you have flood insurance?

- Do you have a disaster kit ready to go?

- Have you removed broken tree limbs from your yard?

Are your gutters clean?

- Do you have a secure place to store outdoor lawn

furniture, toys, plants and other items that can be easily

picked up by high winds?

- Do you have hurricane shutters or pre-cut plywood

panels for your windows and sliding glass doors?

Please take every precaution necessary to keep you and

your family safe. If hurricane warnings are issued,

please listen and act accordingly.

Water Safety Checklist

Children can drown

in the time it takes to

answer a phone call.

For people between

the ages of 5 and 24,

drowning is the sec-

ond leading cause of

accidental death.

Help keep your chil-

dren safe by follow-

ing these important

guidelines:

- Watch your children constantly when they are in or

around water, including bathtubs, spas, and wading

pools.

- Do Not rely on inflatable “water wings” or air filled

toys as safety devices.

- Swimming lessons, life jackets, and the presence of

lifeguards are not substitutes for parental supervision.

- Before diving into the water, make sure you know

what is on the bottom and that the depth is safe. Nine

feet is the minimum recommended by the American

Red Cross. Diving or “flips” are not permitted at

Arbor Greene Pools.

- In open water, only use designated swimming areas.

Check with the lifeguard to confirm that conditions

are safe before the children enter the water. Watch for

hazards such as jellyfish, large waves, or rip currents.

- If you own your own pool or spa, be sure it’s sur-

rounded on all four sides by a five foot fence that pre-

vents children from getting over, under, or through it.

- Teach children never to go in the water unless a

grown-up is watching them. Teens and adults should

always swim with a buddy. Children must be 14 and

have an Arbor Greene ID Tag to use the Arbor

Greene Pools, if unaccompanied by an adult.

- Keep emergency telephone numbers with you.

- When boating, doing water sports, or near open bod-

ies of water, make sure each child wears a “U.S.

Coast Guard approved” life jacket known as a PFD. A

child’s “Type II PFD” keeps the child’s head above

the water, even if he or she is unconscious.

Please keep an eye on your children! Designate a spe-

cific person to watch the children when around water.

A Message from the Neighborhood Watch Directors

Hello Arbor Greene Neighbors. It’s that time of year again when many of us are taking trips away from home.

Below are some tips to help secure your home when you’re on vacation, a business trip, or subject to an unex-

pected event. The Tampa Police Department (TPD) Vacation Form is available for residents to begin additional

TPD patrols around your home. If you would like to receive the form, please e-mail us at ArborGreene-

[email protected] or make a copy from the Arbor Greene Website. The form can be faxed in or called into

the TPD at your convenience.

Here are a few of the many security tips to help keep your home and valuables safe while you’re away:

-Do not discuss your absence except with trusted persons who need to know you will be gone. Do not post your

travel plans on Facebook or similar social network sites. Encourage your children to also limit with whom they

share their upcoming trip plans.

-Consider having a trusted friend, neighbor, or relative “house sit” while you’re gone. Let them know how to

reach you and your insurance company in an emergency; provide them your cell phone number, vehicle de-

scription, and license plate number. If you cannot have anyone stay at your home, then arrange for someone to

occasionally inspect your home to make sure nothing has been disturbed.

-Have the Post Office hold your mail, or arrange for a trusted neighbor to pick up your mail, packages, newspa-

pers, and circulars on your front door daily.

-Arrange to have your lawn cut and watered. Have a trusted person put out and take in your trash cans and re-

cycling bins on the days you normally do.

-Move valuables so they cannot be easily seen through windows or doors. If you have a safe deposit box, con-

sider placing some of your expensive property in that receptacle, including extra credit cards and lists of serial

numbers and photographs of your valuables. Deposit extra cash or paychecks in your bank account.

Continued from page 12 - A Message from the Neighborhood Watch Directors

-Repair broken windows and doors; make sure locks are in good working order. Cut back shrubbery so crimi-

nals cannot hide behind them. Put window shades in normal position – don’t do things which advertise the

home is empty.

-Turn down the volume on your home phone so that it cannot be heard from the outside. To help them deter-

mine if anyone is home, thieves may try calling your number to see if anyone responds to the ringing of the

phone. Some criminals have been able to obtain “reverse” phone directories which give your address and your

home phone.

-Put indoor lights and a radio or television on timers so they turn off and on and give the appearance someone

is in the house. Added protection can be achieved if you have a trusted person rearrange the timer-controlled

lights to present a different pattern for part of your absence.

-Close and secure your garage doors and consider putting a lock on them on the inside. Lock all vehicles which

remain at your home, even if they are in the garage. Don’t forget to remove valuables from the vehicles. If you

have electronic devices on your lanai or bicycles/scooters in the backyard, put them in a secure location.

-Finally, some of the most basic and important security tips are to lock all doors, windows, lanai doors, and

fence gates; turn on front and rear lights; and turn on an alarm system if you have one.

If you would like to receive additional security tips and other relevant information from Tampa Police Depart-

ment, please e-mail us at [email protected]. Joining this e-mail distribution group does not

obligate you to any other Neighborhood Watch activity, but should help you and your family to become better

informed and more secure.
